The "new" Myki ticketing system is years behind schedule and has cost a mint at over 1.3 BILLION dollars. This news item aired in Channel 7 Melbourne mid 2008 and as of now (late Jan 2009) the system still has not been rolled out and there is no indication of when it will apart from a "trial" in Geelong - a small satellite city to the West of Melbourne.

Online and yearly sales of the Metcard are to be phased out at the start of 2012, with the full change to Myki by the end of 2012. To sweeten the deal, the price to buy the Myki card has been cut from $10 to $6, and the $9.95 administration fee to be waived. However this saving will be immediately eaten up in fare increases from January 1 2012. And still, no word on how interstate and international visitors can purchase temporary Myki passes. The new Victorian Liberal Government is putting Myki under review, calling for all transport operators to put their thoughts on the system forward and also getting an independent audit on the costings and performance. Rollout to regional areas has also been frozen pending the outcome of these investigations. We got the myki.... It's not "as" bad as I thought it would be, but it definatly wasn't great. We traveled on Zone 1 from Ormond Station to the city and back again after spending about 4 hours in the city and the fare cost for me was $1.47 (Conc). I was happy that the card worked through my leather wallet and by the low fare cost. The touch on and touch off times were not as bad as people have been saying. ~one second~ though you are standing there for a little while the overall touch on/touch off time isn't any longer than putting a metcard in the reader. I didn't try my myki on a tram, though I am heading into the city today (It's currently 2:09 am) and I will make a video of me trying and hopefully touching on and off a tram reader.
