Recorded September 8, 2008. Nanortalik is the tenth biggest town of Greenland and is located on a small island (also called Nanortalik) roughly 60 miles north of Uummannarsuaq, the southern tip of Greenland. The town has 1564 inhabitants. The name Nanortalik means "place of polar bears". Because of its location, this area was one of the first parts of Greenland settled, both by Inuit and by the Norse. Nanortalik was founded in 1770. The video begins as we sail into Nanortalik's harbour on the Sea Princess. Next I brave the gale force winds which almost aborted our call here and walk around the small village. I visited the well-preserved old historic quarter around the colonial harbor where the Nanortalik Museum is located. Here I captured the local citizens demonstrating life in Greenland. I also visit the Nanortalik Church which is a Danish Lutheran church. The video concludes as I sail away from Greenland during a beautiful sunset. Shot on September 8, 2008. The video begins as we sail around Cape Farewell which is the southern tip of Greenland. It is a very scenic passage with icebergs floating by and the mountains of Greenland just off the ship's bow. After dropping anchor in Nanortalik at noon we go ashore. With a population of over 1500 people, Nanortalik is the tenth largest town in Greenland. The name Nanortalik means "place of polar bears". I brave the gale force winds which almost aborted our call here and walk around the small town. I visited the well-preserved old historic quarter around the colonial harbor where the Nanortalik Museum is located. Here I captured the local citizens demonstrating life in Greenland. Recorded September 8, 2008. Cape Farewell is a headland on the southern shore of Egger Island, Greenland. It is the southernmost extent of Greenland, projecting out into the North Atlantic Ocean and the Labrador Sea on the same latitude as Stockholm. Greenland is a member country of the Kingdom of Denmark located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically and ethnically an Arctic island country and geographically a part of the continent of North America, politically and historically Greenland is associated with Europe, specifically Iceland, Norway, and Denmark. In 1979, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland, with a relationship described by the Rigsfællesskabet, and in 2008 Greenland voted to become a separate country within the Kingdom of Denmark, effective June 2009. Greenland is, by area, the world's largest island that is not a continent in its own right, as well as the least densely populated country in the world.
