The National Flag (flag) is a symbol of the Nation's respect and pride. There is a liberal use of the flag on Independence Day and Republic day. There is a new trend of selling flags made up of paper and plastic, which is incorrect. With a sense of national pride, people enthusiastically buy such flags but the very next day, we find these flags being trampled upon the road, in dustbins and elsewhere.

Tiananmen Square National Flag Raising Ceremony in Beijing China
Every morning, 365 days a year, a large crowd (consisting of mostly tourists and out of towners) gather at Tiananmen Square to salute and pay respect to the rising of China's national flag. My uncle and I decided to make this pilgrimage after China's 60th year mega celebration in October 2009. So on October 16th 2009, we dragged our groggy and disoriented selves out of bed at 3AM, caught a cab to Tiananmen, lined up into 4 straight lines outside the square at 3:30 until 5 when we were promptly marched over to the security checkpoint at the entrance of the Square. I was feeling pretty good about myself after being the first person to pass through the security scanners when I suddenly realized people behind me were stampeding like young gazelles towards the "front row." My inner marathoner-wannabe spirits moved me to race to the front of the pack. Out of breath and with renewed hope of my future as a professional triathlon athlete, I arrived at the finish line and scored a good "seat". By seat, I mean a claustrophobic spot to stand for an entire hour as thousands of people behind you try to push and shove to finagle their way in front of you. I shan't go into the unpleasant exchanges of words that went back and forth for an entire hour. Alas, at 6:23AM as the sun was rising, the ceremony began! Of course, it wasn't until 6:20 that I thought to test my camera to check if the pictures/videos would come out with adequate lighting. They conveniently didn't (oh silly rabbit me <b>...</b>

After the Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902 and the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910, the British Union Flag became the national flag of South Africa. As was the case throughout the British Empire, the Red and Blue Ensign with the Union coat of arms were granted by British Admiralty warrants in 1910 for use at sea. These ensigns were not intended to be used as the Union's national flag, although they were used by some people as such, especially the Red Ensign. Thousands have taken to the streets of the Syrian capital Damascus to support the country's embattled leader Bashar al-Assad. The demonstration comes on the year anniversary of the anti-Assad uprising that has left scores dead and injured. The pro-Assad rally is taking place under the slogan of protesting a 'one-year conspiracy' to overthrow the regime. The opposition said that Assad has forced people to attend the Damascus demonstration in order to overshadow the opposition rallies marking the beginning of the popular uprising in Syria a year ago, AP reports. Video footage, however, shows people of different ages, including children, dancing and waving Syrian flags. Others had the national flag painted on their faces. We watched Beating the Retreat Parade at Wagah Border on 26th Nov 2010, which was the 3rd Anniversary Day of the 26/11 Attacks in Mumbai. Wagah Border the last checkpost to Pakistan is just 9Kms from Amritsar.Each evening the bugles sound the last post , 2 immaculately uniformed border guards on either side of the border , goose step across to flag poles to lower the respective national flags , their steps are matched so perfectly that it is like watching a mirror image of same exercise.The ceremony attracts hordes of spectators on both sides , especially more so on the indian side , is a poignant reminder of the partition of 1947 when Punjab was divided between 2 nations. Saudi-Pak Joint Exercise "AL-SAMSAAM-IV-2011" Begins (26/09/11)
* تحيا الصداقة السعودية باك * Pakistan Army: :September 26, 2011 An impressive opening ceremony of three weeks long joint Exercise (AL-SAMSAAM-IV-2011) between Pakistan Army and Royal Saudi Land Forces was held today near Jhelum. National Flags of both the countries were hoisted. Inspector General Training and Evaluation, Lieutenant General Muzamil Hussain was chief guest on the occassion. Speaking on the occassion Lieutenant General, Muzamil Hussain said that Saudi Arabia has always been a Pakistan's special friend and armies of both countries maintain close ties with each other. He said joint exercise will provide an opportunity to troops of both the countries to benefit from each other's experience. Defense Attache of Saudia Arabia Commodore Abdullah Saeed Ghamdi also attended the ceremony and said that both the nations have long lasting and strong historical relationship. It is worth mentioning here that the joint Exercise aims at familiarization and sharing of information through an inclusive training programme in real time. This will also include collective training at unit and brigade level to observe drills and procedures in low intensity conflict operations.
