Using National Parks as Classrooms

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The National Park Service in the United States will mark its one hundredth anniversary in twenty-sixteen. As it nears its second century, the Park Service plans to increase its educational programs for students and teachers. The plans include transportation support for one hundred thousand students each year to visit national parks to learn about nature and history. For example, Yellowstone is believed to have been the world's first national park when it was established in eighteen seventy-two. Other students will get a chance to see parks in faraway places through Skype and other online programs. The National Park Service also works with partners to provide education. One of its partners is a nonprofit organization called NatureBridge. NatureBridge is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and says one million young people have taken part in its programs. The organization works with students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and uses national parks as its classrooms. It provides field science programs at Yosemite National Park and four other locations in California and the northwestern state of Washington. Now, NatureBridge is launching an East Coast center with a four-million-dollar grant from Google. The program will begin in April at the Prince William Forest Park in Virginia. Students stay for three to five days in NatureBridge programs. The activities are aimed at developing ...

What's That Smell? Banff National Park's Wild Images

As anyone with a dog knows, there are a lot of interesting smells out there; some worth rubbing up against and rolling in. As an experiment, we spread some short-acting scents in front of six cameras this past summer to see if they might help us 'detect' more animals. The results varied between sites and we're still analysing the data but the animals at this particular site, up the Cascade River Valley, certainly showed interest. Although it may look like they're dancing and having a great time, it's worth remembering how hard it is to be a wild animal -- especially if you're a grizzly cub and that big male who visits the rub tree soon after you isn't your Dad. Landcruiser crossing Magela Creek in Kakadu National Park

Driving through Magela Creek in a Landcruiser at the end of the Wet Season in Kakadu National Park. During the Wet season, Magela Creek cuts the road between Jabiru and the East Alligator area of Kakadu. The creek usually starts running sometime in December and the last water on the road is usually sometime in April. During the Wet this part of the park can be difficult to access. At the start and end of the Wet the area can be accessed by 4wd, but during the main part of the Wet it is generally not possible to ford the Magela as it gets too deep (the water level fluctuates daily and on occasions it is possible to get through, but you also need to be aware of being caught on the other side). Sometimes tour operators run a boat shuttle through the Magela and leave a bus on the other side for the remaining 25km trip up to the East Alligator. Of course during a really good Wet even this is not possible as there are other creeks to cross on the way and the East Alligator river can flood much of the area further up. For the rest of the year the road is dry and most tourists speed across the creek unaware there is even a creek there as during the dry there is little if any sign of water. During the Wet, the once dry paperbark forests are transformed with an under carpet of beautiful lilies and the whole area comes alive. To visit the East Alligator in the wet season is a fantastic experience. The East Alligator area is a particularly beautiful part of Kakadu with rugged rocky ...

Yellowstone National Park's Wildlife: Bison (Buffalo)

The American bison (Bison bison), also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds - millions. Their range once roughly comprised a triangle between the Great Bear Lake in Canada's far northwest, south to the Mexican states of Durango and Nuevo León, and east along the western boundary of the Appalachian Mountains. Bison were hunted almost to extinction in the late 19th century primarily by market hunters and were reduced to a few hundred by the mid-1880s. They were hunted for their skins, with the rest of the animal left behind to decay on the ground. The US federal government promoted bison hunting for various reasons, to allow ranchers to range their cattle without competition from other bovines, and primarily to weaken the North American Indian population by removing their main food source and to pressure them onto the reservations. Without the bison, native people of the plains were forced either to leave the land or starve to death. For a decade from 1873 on, there were several hundred, perhaps over a thousand, such commercial hide/market hunting outfits harvesting bison at any one time, vastly exceeding the take by American Indians or individual meat hunters. The commercial take arguably was anywhere from 2000 to 100000 animals per day. en.wikipedia.org Music: by Boguslaw Boguch Cysewski, Song of a Winter Stream

Sam Roi Yot National Park 1080HD

Sam Roi Yot National Park is one of those exquisite locations you just can't get out of your head once you've been there. It combines the best of both worlds with trails through dense jungle and deep canyons that are perfect for hiking, as well as having beautiful sandy beaches on which to just laze away the day. Khao Sam Roi Yot has been designated a national park since the mid 60s and the name means 'the mountain with 300 peaks,' which will give you an idea of the varying landscape! Walkways that are built over the marshland give you the opportunity to explore and enjoy parts of the park that would otherwise be out of reach, and a trip across the bay on one of the local high-speed boats gives you a great perspective of the massive size of this park. Perhaps the hidden pearl of the park is the Kuha Karuhas pavilion which sits in a quiet cavern and is one of the most visited parts of Khao Sam Roi Yot. Mesa Verde National Park

Visit the park on-line: www.nps.gov President Theodore Roosevelt on June 29, 1906, set aside Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado. This land, inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans for over 700 years, included the most complete and extensive concentration of prehistoric cliff dwellings in the United States. Today, the park protects over 4000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. In fact, these sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. The Native Americans first settled on the Colorado Plateau and farmed the mesas. Life was hard in the arid climate, boasting warm summers, cold winters, and limited rainfall. They lived in various settlements above ground until AD 1100, when they started constructing the massive cliff dwellings. Many have thought that the Ancestral Puebloans retreated to the cliff dwellings to hide from aggressors, but archeological evidence does not support that theory. In fact, the entire region lived in harmony. The cliff dwellings do offer better protection from the elements than the mesa-top sites, which may be one reason we see so many similar dwellings across the southwest. Between AD 1200 and 1400, there was a mass exodus from the region. To this date, we still do not know why. Perhaps the climate changed significantly, eliminating the ability to farm on the mesa. What do we know, is that their descendants live on in modern tribes residing in the Rio Grande river valley in New Mexico, the ...
