Low frequency radio reception - aircraft beacons
Reception of aircraft beacons (NDBs) to demonstrate low frequency radio reception. Beacons, usually located near airports, transmit their two or three letter callsign by morse code. These callsigns are abbrevations of the beacon's location. Beacons near major airports transmit voice information including location and weather conditions. NDB signals around 200 - 500 kHz are picked up by the ferrite rod (visible inside the larger black box) and are upconverted to around 4 MHz. This is received on an HF receiver. The converter uses an NE602 mixer/oscillator chip and was designed by Drew Diamond VK3XU. Low frequencies are used by broadcast stations in parts of Europe. Radio amateurs in some countries also have access to parts of the LF spectrum. In Australia amateurs must obtain a permit. List of Australian NDBs: www.radiospecialists.com.au

Bct15 Scanning Irish Airband The airband or air band is the band of frequencies used for radio communication in aviation. Airband is used to mean the VHF band between 108 MHz and 137 MHz, which covers its use for commercial and general aviation, radionavigational aids, air traffic control and other uses. In common use among aviation professionals, the band of frequencies is sometimes referred to as VHF or Victor. Military aircraft also operate using additional frequencies (225 - 400 MHz) which are not part of the airband. The lower part of the band, from 108 to 117.975 MHz, is reserved for navigational aids such as VOR beacons, Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) and Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) messages, and precision approach systems such as ILS or LAAS. Some types of aviation-related stations, such as NDBs and DMEs, do not operate on these frequencies; in the case of NDBs the longwave frequency band is used. The rest of the airband is allocated to voice communications using amplitude modulation.

O vôo TB303 decolou de Congonhas rumo a Porto Alegre com escala em Florianópolis, que encontrava-se sob condições climáticas adversas, sob a influência de forte frente fria passando pela TMA. Naquela época, o aeroporto Hercílio Luz contava apenas com dois NDBs como auxílio de navegação, instrumentos especialmente sensíveis às descargas magnéticas que se encontravam naquela hora sobre a região. Talvez tenha acontecido um falso bloqueio do NDB, e isto explique porquê o major checador da FAB, que então pilotava a aeronave, tenha se afastado tanto da rota prevista. O 727 prosseguiu descida para um rebloqueio, mas antes disso, às 20:38 colidiu com a Serra de Ratones. Por mais 60 metros eo PT-TYS teria passado sobre o morro. Apesar da força do impacto e da total destruição da aeronave, dos 58 ocupantes à bordo, 3 passageiros sobreviveram, sendo resgatados na madrugada do dia 13.
