Wednesday August 24, 2011 in Arlington, VA. After a press conference and rally at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church more than 300 people marched to a hearing held by the Homeland Security Advisory Council's Task Force on Secure Communities at George Mason Law School. The same agency that recently announced that it will force the disastrous deportation program on all cities and states including those that have rejected it like Arlington,VA, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Montgomery County, MD, Illinois and New York State, called for community input at 5 hearings around the country. On the heels of the Los Angeles and Chicago hearings that ended in walk-outs, the administration responded with an announcement of case by case review of deportations. Marchers, including the Rev. Linda Olson Peebles of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington and other clergy active in VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) sent the message to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that it's time to end the so-called "Secure Communities" (S-Comm) program. Special thanks to Maria Bolanos and Florinda Lorenzo, two Casa de Maryland members facing deportation, who confronted Marc Rapp, the head of S-Comm, who sat amongst the audience. Human rights leader and organizer of the Phoenix-based PUENTE Movement, Salvador Reza, was targeted and wrongly arrested on Friday, July 30th, by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. At around 3:30 am the next morning, Salvador Reza was arraigned. During Reza's appearance before the night court judge, the county prosecutor stated, "I did not see that this rose to the level of probable cause." Reza's attorney immediately replied, "Your honor, I just heard the prosecutor tell the court that there's not enough evidence here to suggest that Mr. Reza committed a crime. I ask that the charge be dismissed and he be released immediately." Reza was being charged with "obstructing a judicial proceeding." The judge replied, "I do not have enough information to find probable cause in this matter, sir" telling the county attorney. However, the Judge declined to dismiss the charge, but released Salvador Reza on his own recognizance and set his court date for August 18th. When Human Rights Organizers are targeted and unlawfully arrested, it becomes apparent that the MCSO is operating a politically motivated campaign to silence opposing voices, those that are exposing their unscrupulous practices. The US Department of Justice has been investigating Arpaio for civil rights abuses for over a year, and there's also a federal grand jury in Phoenix looking into MCSO and Arpaio for criminal abuse of power.
