"Pikine" Video Celebrates Past and Sings Hope for the Future in Senegal SENEGAL, January 16, 2010 - Released on Senegalese television was the much anticipated video for the song "Pikine (ft. Ndondo Lo)", revealing an unexpected collaboration between hip hop crew Gohk-Bi System and legendary Mbalax singer Ndongo Lo. Hailing from one of Dakar's largest slums, Pikine, the artists created the video just before Ndongo died in 2005, but chose to leave it unreleased until now. The release of "Pikine" proves noteworthy as the public did not know beforehand about the collaboration between Gohk Bi-System (GBS) and Ndongo Lo. The music video, which presents slogans and messages of freedom, and tribute to Ndongo, is being aired in honor of the anniversary of Ndongo's death. Directed by Magee McIlvaine (Magee Films, NomadicWax), it includes several scenes shot in Massachusetts, where GBS is currently based, as well as previously recorded footage of Ndongo singing. While Ndongo Lo gained popularity as a Mbalax singer (Senegalese popular dance music), GBS navigated the hip hop scene since before its founding by childhood friends Mamadou, Diasse and Bathie in 1993. Despite pursuing different musical styles, Ndongo and the members of GBS share having grown up in Pikine, just on the border of capital city, Dakar.
