Attack Ads, Circa 1800

Have this year's negative political ads really "taken dirty to a whole new level, as CNN's Anderson Cooper frets? Is a "return to civility...a relic of a bygone era," as President Barack Obama laments? Er, not exactly. If anonymous political speech, the other widely decried villain of this political season, helped found the United States, attack ads are as American as apple pie. If you fancy yourself a patriot or a history buff, you will most certainly approve this message, which is taken from statements made by, for, and against the nation's founders. Approximately 1.45 minutes. Written and produced by Meredith Bragg. Voiced by Caleb Brown, Michael C. Moynihan, and Austin Bragg. Check out "The Positives of Negative Campaigning," why "Attack Ads Are Good For You." and Reason's 2006 list of the "Top 10 Dirtiest Political Campaigns" in US history. Colin Powell Eviscerates McCain's Negative Smear Campaign

Press availability following his endorsement on "Meet the Press." Destroys every McCain and Republican talking points from Ayers to "terrorist" to Rep. Bachmann's rant to "socialism." From MSNBC, 10-19-08. Q: Sir, what role did McCain's negativity play in your decision? POWELL: It troubled me. You know, we have two wars. We have economic problems. We have health problems. We have education problems. We have infrastructure problems. We have problems around the world with our allies. And so those are the problems the American people wanted to hear about, not about Mr. Ayers, not about who is a Muslim and who's not a Muslim. Those kinds of images going out on al Jazeera are killing us around the world. And we have got to say to the world it doesn't make any difference who you are or what you are. If you're an American you're an American. And this business of, for example, a congressman from Minnesota who's going around saying let's examine all congressmen to see who is pro-America or not pro-America. We have got to stop this kind of nonsense and pull ourselves together and remember that our great strength is in our unity and in our diversity. And so that really was driving me. And to focus on people like Mr. Ayers, these trivial issues for the purpose of suggesting that somehow Mr. Obama would have some kind of terrorists' inclinations, I thought that was over the top. It was beyond just good political fighting back and forth. I think it went beyond. And then to sort of ...

John McCain: Negative Attack Ads Show You Have No Vision

In 2000, John McCain said that when you run negative attack ads, you have no vision or cant articulate your own vision. Romney's Desperate Attacks

"As we learned from the 2008 campaign, the more desperate Romney gets, the more negative he becomes. This week is the beginning of the 2012 edition of Mitt Romney's GOP Desperation Express. His negative campaigns are kissing cousins of his positive campaigns in one regard: He'll say and do anything if he things it will help him get elected. During the 2008 campaign, Romney launched attacks against every one of his major rivals-- Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani. His Republican opponents said of the ads: "distortion," "hypocrisy," "lying," "desperate," "dishonest," "simply aren't true," and "clear willingness to say and do anything for political gain." While the Republican candidates disagreed on much, there was a general agreement that Romney's relentless attacks were unfair." -- Priorities USA Action's Bill Burton

3 Reasons Not to Get Worked Up Over Super PACs

Everybody and their brother -- even Stephen Colbert - is freaking out about "super PACs," which are an outgrowth of the Citzens United decision in 2010. Traditional political action committees (PACs) are subject to federal limits on how much money donors can give in specific election cycles. Super PACS allow groups such as nonprofit corporations and unions to spend unlimited money on political speech as long as they don't coordinate their activity with the official campaign of a given candidate. But for all the bellyaching, here are three good reasons not to get worked up over super PACS. 1. Billionaires don't need them to influence elections. In the wake of an anti-Mitt Romney documentary from Winning Our Future, a group tied to billionaire Sheldon Adelson, The New York Times fretted that the film -- which has had little or no effect on Romney's candidacay -- "underscores how [Citizens United] has made it possible for a wealthy individual to influence an election." Actually, it's always been legal for rich people to spend what they want as long as they make "independent expenditures" that aren't coordinated with official campaigns. Billionares don't need super Pacs to get their message out. But super PACS may just let the rest of us have our say. 2. Super PACS Go Negative -- and That's a Good Thing! Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), whose campaign finance legislation was rendered moot by Citizens United, complains that super Pacs not only flood elections with money but flood ...

Jim Messina: April Fundraising & Paths to 270 Update

Help build this campaign: my.barackobama.com Hey everybody. I'm Jim Messina, the President's campaign manager. I wanted to give you a quick update on what we've been up to this month, and what that's going to mean between now and November. We had 169500 first-time donors in April—putting us within reach of 2 million donors this election cycle. And here's my favorite part: our average donation was $50.23, with 98 percent of those donations $250 or less. That makes our campaign different, and it's how we're going to build a winning organization across the country. One of the most important things we can do is get our arms around that fact that this election is going to be close given the historic challenges the nation faced when the President first came into office. Oil company executives and other special interests are dumping millions of dollars in Super Pac attack ads. In fact as this chart shows, we got almost $60 million in spending against the President and his policies so far in this campaign by the other side. The last two weeks have shown this clearly. The Koch-brothers funded Super Pac spent $6 million dollars on TV ads attacking the President. Mitt Romney's Super Pac put another $4 million on the air. That's $10 million in ads from two outside groups who can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money. While Governor Romney has run an almost solely negative campaign tearing down the President, we started this campaign with a series of positive ads. These ads ...

Santorum nearly squeezes out come-from-behind Iowa caucus victory

nma.tv Rick Santorum lost the Iowa caucuses to Mitt Romey by a mere eight votes, with Ron Paul finishing third. Romney beat Santorum, 30,0015 to 30007. Both Santorum and Romney received 25 percent of yesterday's vote, with Paul third at 21 percent. The Republican electorate is fractured between voters who support the relatively moderate Romney, who according to polls has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama, and voters looking for a more conservative candidate to support. Mitt Romney may have won the Iowa presidential caucuses, but Rick Santorum won the night. Romney has a huge campaign war chest and a big-spending PAC run by former aids, Restore Our Future, that dropped $4.1 million on the Iowa caucuses, compared to $600000 by PACs which supported Santorum. That Santorum, the conservative former Pennsylvania senator who written off until last week, nearly won the Iowa caucuses shows just how unenthusiastic Republican voters, especially evangelical Christians, are for the former Massachusetts governor. Ron Paul won the internet by getting endorsements from Chuck Norris and Drudge readers. So his third place finish must be disappointing. The Libertarian-leaning Paul possesses a fanatically loyal core of supporters but is not popular among moderates or politically conservative evangelicals. Santorum's sudden surge from behind was also a product of spectacular implosions by candidates Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Herman Cain, each of whom was for a period of ...

Leaked Lobbying Firm's Memo Spells Out Plan to Undermine Occupy Wall Street - described as a "hit job" Sat Nov 19, 2011 8:53 AM EST A well-known Washington lobbying firm with links to the financial industry has proposed an $850000 plan to take on Occupy Wall Street and politicians who might express sympathy for the protests, according to a memo obtained by the MSNBC program "Up w/ Chris Hayes." The proposal was written on the letterhead of the lobbying firm Clark Lytle Geduldig & Cranford and addressed to one of CLGC's clients, the American Bankers Association. CLGC's memo proposes that the ABA pay CLGC $850000 to conduct "opposition research" on Occupy Wall Street in order to construct "negative narratives" about the protests and allied politicians. The memo also asserts that Democratic victories in 2012 would be detrimental for Wall Street and targets specific races in which it says Wall Street would benefit by electing Republicans instead. TO LEARN MORE, DONATE, & SPREAD THE WORD: IndieGoGo.com "After EDC" is an upcoming feature documentary on Electric Daisy Carnival, one of the longest running annual dance events in Southern California. In the summer of 2010, a firestorm of negative media coverage and political outrage erupted as a result of the ecstasy-related death of a teenage girl who attended EDC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In response to the tragedy and controversy, the County Public Health Department launched an innovative harm reduction campaign alongside local promoters, DJs, and event safety experts. The story highlights the collaborative efforts between the County and the electronic community to keep Los Angeles from losing the largest music gathering in North America, as this collaboration was the first of its kind by any government agency and music promotional body in the history of the United States. "Blood Money": The New Anti-Romney Ad by Newt Gingrich-Supporting SuperPac

Newt Gingrich's campaign supporters aim to cut deep in the battle against Mitt Romney. Winning Our Future, a Super PAC supporting the former house speaker, is releasing a mini-documentary called "Blood Money." The seven-minute negative ad focuses on Romney's connection to Damon Corp, a company that paid millions in fines for Medicare fraud. While Romney was never personally implicated in the scandal that embroiled Damon Corp, fact-checking site PolitiFact has rated a separate ad drawing the same connections as "Mostly True." Will the seven-minute negative ad do damage? After what pundits are calling his best debate performances thus far, Romney is ahead of Gingrich in the latest Florida polling. But national polls have Gingrich pulling ahead as far as 10 points. The sunshine state may not be the end, and it could still get bloodier. Already candidates are looking toward Maine and Nevada primaries in February.

Take It Over - Official Campaign Launch

Election Day is October 6. Take it Over! Students, youth and Ontarians of all generations are coming together to shape this election by registering, voting and sharing our voices. Post-secondary education in Ontario is facing crisis. Years of underfunding have been downloaded onto students and have resulted in tuition fees that have increased at 200 per cent the rate of inflation. Since more than 70 per cent of new jobs require some form of post-secondary credential, this crisis has negative implications for the future of Ontario's economy. A Generation In Debt Today, students with loans graduate with an average of $37000 of debt after a four-year degree. This same amount could be a down payment on a house costing $740000. A generation of students are graduating with mortgaged-sized debt loads and this has negative implications for their future choices and participation in the economy. Who is Paying? Public institutions are more privately funded today than ever before. In 1990, fees paid by students comprised only 20 per cent of the operating costs of post-secondary institutions. Today, students and their families are paying for over half the cost of running institutions. Ontario is the Worst in the Country Ontario has the lowest rate of public funding for colleges and universities, less than half the per student funding in Alberta. The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign announced today the release of its latest ad, 'Selling Access', another two-minute web video aimed at former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, calling him out as a corrupt Washington insider who got rich through influence-peddling. The video, which the campaign plans to promote prominently on conservative web sites, includes a clip of Gingrich calling himself an 'insider' and another in which the former Speaker brags about getting paid $60000-a-speech. The video comes after the viral success of Paul's earlier web ad, 'Serial Hypocrisy', which criticizes Gingrich for many of the same issues. www.ronpaul2012.com

There's another ad that says that Obama was interested in teaching sex education to kindergardners. Now we know that those two ads are untrue, they're lies. And yet you at the end of it say I approve these messages. Do you really approve them? JOHN MCCAIN: Actually they're not lies and if you've seen some of the ads that are running against me- BARBARA WALTERS: You said the same thing about putting lipstick on a pig. You yourself used the same expression. MCCAIN: When I was talking about a health care plan. WALTER: He talked about change. He wasn't talking about Sarah Palin [crosstalk] MCCAIN: Senator Obama chooses his words very carefully, okay, he shouldn't have said it. He shouldn't have said it.
