Volkswagen will run two new ads during the Super Bowl Sunday broadcast on American television. Volkswagen of America will pay dearly to air two 30-second spots - one for the all-new North American Passat model and one for the 2012 Beetle - which will run during the second and fourth quarters of the game. The Passat commercial features a Star Wars theme and was produced with the help of Lucasfilm Ltd., George Lucas' production company. The visuals are accompanied by the well-known "Imperial March" music by film composer John Williams. The ad shows a child dressed as Darth Vader summoning the "Force" upon discovering a Passat in the driveway. The other spot for the all-new 2012 VW Beetle features a CGI-generated black beetle who reigns supreme in the forest. The soundtrack includes a new rendition of the famed rock song "Black Betty" by Jon Spencer and the Blues Explosion. The ads are the work of Volkswagen of America's agency Deutsch LA Inc. The Super Bowl takes place on Sunday February 6th.

A comparison to the 1998 New Beetle shows this: nothing remained as it was on the old car: "The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front bonnet is longer, the front windscreen is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism," explains Klaus Bischoff. While the New Beetle was defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), the new model has broken free of this geometry. The roof profile actually runs distinctly lower and can be considered a continuation of the Ragster concept car shown in Detroit in 2005 -- a type of hot rod based on the New Beetle. Please ignore the background sound, its a nearby generator working. In video, you will see the startup problem that I am having in my New Beetle. Some times it starts off fine, runs fine and all good. And sometimes as you see during startup you can see a ESP & ABS lights solid on with Brake Light flashing. I am not sure what the problem is. Is it battery (Which is good and tested) is it the Alternator (Rear Coil Brushes replaced) or what could it really be. Expert opinions will be appreciated. My mechanic fixed it saying that its the alternator, but the problem is back. I want to personally understand the problem. Also note in the video, the dash lights go dim, suddenly bright and once bright the car starts off fine, if dim it will crank but not start. Ps: Ignore the Airbag warning, that's some loose contact in passenger seat, which is not of my concern as of now.

Quick video showing the insturment panel of my 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS during engine start. Notice the low milage! Yes, the car is 11 years old, but it has been garage kept since 1999 and not driven very often. It still has the original tires on it! The check engine light is a side effect of an ETC sensor problem I had. The sensor has been replaced, but I'm hesitant to clear the OBD codes from the ECU as it may be going through an automatic reset process. UPDATE: The car is running wonderfully! In the last year since making this video, I've had to replace the ignition coil and have had problems with the turn signal relay, but the car is running very very well!
