Titanic 1912 Newsreel (original)

Here is one of the original theatre newsreels that was shown to the eager public following the Titanic disaster. Although this footage is labelled up and presented to show the Titanic, the footage vessel shown is Titanic's older sister Olympic and filmed in New York during the summer of 1911. Captain Edward John Smith is seen wearing the White Star Lines summer uniform. We see views of life onboard the vessel prior to and departing from the New York return voyage. Captain Smith is seen on the bridge and Starboard bridge wings, watching the activity on the dockside and forward well-deck below him. We see passengers walking the A-Deck promanade and aft decks of Boat Deck, A Deck and B Deck. We also see views across the Poop Deck that show some of the ships telegraphs and phones on the stern docking bridge. We also get a chance to view the Boat Deck with lifeboats in position, looking from aft towards the bow. The footage then cuts to scenes of the rescue ship Carpathia, onboard the liner as crew of the small Cunarder play around for the camera man. Her Captain, Auther Rostron is seen along with young members of the crew passing information to dockside press. In all, this is a sad but historic reminder of not only the early reactions to the Titanic disaster, but also a reminder to the early days of cinamaphotography.

(Rare!) Helen Keller & Anne Sullivan (1930 Newsreel Footage)

Quite a rare material. Helen Keller, the American author, political activist and lecturer, whom I don't have to explain much about, and her instructor and lifelong companion, Anne Sullivan, appears in a Vitaphone newsreel from 1930. In this footage Sullivan shows the way how Helen Keller learned to talk. The final line of this footage, "I Am Not DUMB now!" is somewhat touching. I know this footage have been shown on lots of more recent materials, but I was little bit surprised that nobody uploaded this before on YT except some clips, so I upload the full-length version.

Newsreel - Snowstorm strands dozens on Donner Pass (1952)

Just because you're snowed-in here-and-now doesn't mean you wouldn't have been in similar circumstances there-and-then. I n this case, the passenger train "City of San Francisco" has been stranded in over ten feet of snow after a blizzard within the legendary Donner Pass. The travelers survived this journey, unlike their fabled predecessors, the legendary Donner Party of the mid-19th century, who, when stranded, resorted to cannibalism. Helen Keller & Anne Sullivan (1928 Newsreel Footage with Open Captions and Audio Description)

Helen Keller's loss of vision and hearing in infancy made comprehension of the outside world next to impossible—or so it seemed. When teacher Anne Sullivan agreed to work with Keller, that world opened up, especially when Keller comprehended the function and purpose of language. Keller and Sullivan appear in this newsreel footage from 1928, in which Sullivan explains and then demonstrates the methodology used to teach Keller language, most elements of which are still used worldwide with students who are deaf-blind. This full-length version is brought to you by the Described and Captioned Media Program (www.dcmp.org) with the permission of the copyright holder, the University of South Carolina Newsreel Library (www.sc.edu/library/newsfilm/). Newsreel of the Estonian and Latvian Waffen-SS in Action

This unit had its origins in the Estonian SS Legion which was first formed on the 28th of August, 1942. Wikipedia: Division - Battles at Narva In January 1944, the 20. Estnische SS-Freiwilligen-Division began formation. The majority of the troops were drawn from the 3. Estnische SS-Freiwilligen Brigade, however elements from Ost Battalions Nr. 658, also known as Pups of Rebane (="Fox") and Nr. 659, the 287.Polizei-Füsilier-Bataillon and the returned Estonian volunteers of the Finnish army unit Infantry Regiment 200 were also absorbed into the division. On 8 February 1944, the division was attached to SS-Gruppenführer Felix Steiner's III SS (Germanic) Panzer Corps, currently defending the heavily pressured Narva bridgehead. The division was to replace the remnants of the 9. and 10.Luftwaffe-Feld-Divisions, which were struggling to hold the line against a Soviet bridgehead near Siivertsi. Upon arriving at the front on 20 February, the Estonians were immediately ordered to eradicate the threatening Siivertsi Soviet bridgehead. In nine days of heavy fighting, the division had pushed the Soviets back across the river, and restored the line. The division remained stationed in the Ssivertsi sector, being engaged in heavy combat. In May, the division was pulled back and reformed as the 20. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (estnische Nr.1), and the returned Narwa battalion was absorbed into the division as the reconnaissance abteilung. By that time active conscription of ...
