Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone

Corn starch is a shear thickening non-Newtonian fluid meaning that it becomes more viscous when it is disturbed. When it's hit repeatedly by something like a speaker cone it forms weird tendrils. The video was shot at 30 fps and the speaker cone was vibrating at 30 Hz which is why there is no blur. This is the original video with the actual sound of the speaker.

Non-newtonian fluid: IT'S ALIVE! [HD]

My experiment about non newtonian fluid in forced resonance using a loudspeaker with various kind of waves and frequencies. the last test is done with a 120hz sine wave. from Wikipedia: A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid whose flow properties are not described by a single constant value of viscosity. Many polymer solutions and molten polymers are non-Newtonian fluids, as are many commonly found substances such as ketchup, starch suspensions, paint, blood and shampoo. In a Newtonian fluid, the relation between the shear stress and the strain rate is linear (and if one were to plot this relationship, it would pass through the origin), the constant of proportionality being the coefficient of viscosity. In a non-Newtonian fluid, the relation between the shear stress and the strain rate is nonlinear, and can even be time-dependent. Therefore a constant coefficient of viscosity can not be defined. A ratio between shear stress and rate of strain (or shear-dependent viscosity) can be defined, this concept being more useful for fluids without time-dependent behavior.

Non-Newtonian Fluid Egg Protector

I wanted to fined a way to protect an egg from breaking when it decelerated rapidly. I wanted to apply extreme acceleration and then ultimate deceleration, hitting a solid object and have the egg survive. My plan was to surround the egg with a non-Newtonian fluid. The idea was that the force of hitting the ground would be distributed evenly across the surface of the egg. By doing this, the egg with its natural strength would stay in one piece. As it turns out, the egg is buoyant when in the non-Newtonian fluid that I created. This meant that the force would only be distributed over 80% or so of the surface of the egg. Will it work? My vessel was a simple zip-lock bag. Here is another Do It Yourself I have created: www.instructables.com

Fano Flow

Certain non-Newtonian fluids which are elastic display a large resistance to extensional flow. Such behaviour leads to fluid flow arrangements which are simply not possible using ordinary Newtonian fluids. These so-called Fano flows manifest themselves in a variety of ways. In the so-called ''tubeless'' syphon, a fluid can be made to flow up through an unsupported liquid column above the free surface of the liquid. One way to achieve this is by slowly withdrawing and raising a syringe from a pool of the liquid below. In the so-called ''open channel'' syphon, after initially commencing the flow of an elastic fluid from say a beaker, the fluid will continue to flow up the side and over the lip of the beaker for sometime despite the level of its free surface having fallen considerably below the top of the beaker. In this way the slightest spill will cause the beaker to partly empty in what is commonly refereed to as a ''self-syphoning'' effect.

Sound Waves + Corn Starch @ 70 Htz --- Non-Newtonian Liquid --- Fun Science Experiment

I will be playing with different frequencies, amplitudes and substances...very, very cool stuff. Non-Newtonian Liquid: --- Wikipedia --- A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid whose flow properties are not described by a single constant value of viscosity. Therefore a constant coefficient of viscosity cannot be defined. Although the concept of viscosity is commonly used to characterize a material, it can be inadequate to describe the mechanical behavior of a substance, particularly non-Newtonian fluids. They are best studied through several other rheological properties which relate the relations between the stress and strain rate tensors under many different flow conditions, such as oscillatory shear, or extensional flow which are measured using different devices or rheometers. The properties are better studied using tensor-valued constitutive equations, which are common in the field of continuum mechanics.

Sky-Watcher maksutov-newtonian Telescope

The exciting new Mak-Newtonian from Sky-Watcher is just what astrophotographers and serious visual observers have been looking for. Tube Materials The optical tube material is rolled steel, powder-coated reflective gloss black with gold fleck accent. The front and back cells are cast-aluminum painted white, or black. Precision 2 Crayford Focuser is Standard Optical focus is achieved by means of a mechanically ultra-smooth, backlash-free, precision 2 Crayford focuser-assembly. This focuser offers fine and ultra-fine focusing adjustments. The Mak-Newtonian design provides large aperture apochromatic performance with exceptional field correction in a compact, affordable package. Compared to a similarly sized Schmidt-Newtonian, the Mak-Newtonian yields a sharper and more constrasty image. Naturally, the Mak-Newtonian is an excellent visual performer, too. Schott Glass Sky-Watcher Maksutov-Newtonian Series benefit from the inclusion of Schott glass being used for the positive front Crown element in the objective. Cornstarch Monsters - Non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid in a speaker cone

Non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid in a speaker cone subjected to periodic forcing. This was the first test and is just a preliminary video - better one(s) to come. The speaker was an 800W Mutant 30cm dia. subwoofer (£24). The sound box was a sealed enclosure at optimum volume (as given in manual) made by myself out of 15mm MDF, glued (butt-join), sealed and screwed together. The speaker was connected to a signal generator passed through a 12dB power amplifier. An oscilloscope was put in line to check the power going to the speaker (knowing its impedance is 4ohms). The frequency was around 50Hz and the power was somewhere in the range 75-100W (so an 800W subwoofer was overkill, hehe). I was so pre-occupied trying to stop all the equipment shaking itself off the table that I didn't record the actual power ;-( - something to get right next time. I started it at 250W and that made a great mess! The tiny microphone on my camera does no justice to the loudness of the sine wave at 100W! The video is so short thanks to my old memory stick having low capacity at high quality ;-( As for the fluid, pure cornstarch (aka cornflour in the USA) with cold tap water mixed at a mass ratio 1 part water to 1.25 parts cornstarch. You can start to notice the shear thickening (Non-Newtonian) effect at 1:1 mass ratio. The harder you stir it, the more it resists you exponentially. This experiment actually had 100g of water in the cone, so that required 125g of cornstarch. A non-Newtonian fluid ...

Non-Newtonian bass line

What acts like a fluid when you run your finger through it slowly but a solid when you pull your finger through quickly? The answer: a non-Newtonian fluid, or cornflour and water to you and me. Mr Baker from Thomas Hardye School used the cornflour mix to demonstrate vibrations from a loud speaker. By putting fluid on an amp and cranking up the volume, the cornflour rides the standing waves generated. Cornflour + water + loud amp = good vibrations.
