The Turkish Ney Reed Flute Special Music Video(Ney Dinleti)
The Turkish ney reed flute, together with the Turkish tanbur lute and Turkish kemençe fiddle are considered the most typical instruments of Classical Turkish music. The ney also plays a primary role in the music of the Mevlevi Sufi rites (semâ). A rim-blown, oblique flute made of reed, the Turkish ney has six finger-holes in front and a thumb-hole in back. Using cross-fingering, finger-hole shading, and embouchure adjustment, the journeyman player can produce any pitch over a two-and-a-half octave range or more. Nearly all Turkish neys have a mouthpiece made of water buffalo horn, or sometimes ivory, ebony, plastic, or similar durable material. Sizes range from the lowest, Davud (in E/mi, 95 cm long), to the highest, Bolahenk nısfiye (in d/re, 52.5 cm long). The low-pitched Ṣah (Shah) ney (in F/fa, 90 cm long) is shown at right. Note: Pitches in the previous sentence refer to the note generated with all holes closed. In some Turkish musical circles, the "pitch" (akord) of a ney is determined differently, using the note (perde) which matches A=440 (diyapazon). This pitch is one note higher, eg, Mansur being A/La rather than G/Sol. Note also that the lengths above are approximate. One refers to a Turkish ney player using the verb üflemek (blow) although for all other instrumentalists one uses the verb çalmak (play). Persian ney lesson 3
I show how to play the most important gushe's (parts) of dastgah segah. All dastgahs can be played in at least 3 positions (keys) on the ney, here I show how this is done for segah. The scale of segah is Bp CD Ep FGA for daramad, zabol, and muyeh. For mokhalef this is changed to Bp CD Ep F+ GA, ie, the 5th degree becomes about a 1/4 tone higher. Returning to the original scale is called forud. I play first on a G ney (Bp third note in bam), then on an Ap ney (Bp second note in bam) and finally on a C ney (Bp third note in gheesh register). Note that in zabol and muye in the first position (G ney) you have to deal with two half-holed notes next to each other, the two lowest notes in gheesh. Mokhalef is somewhat easier as you need only one half hole (bottom in gheesh). The second position (on Ap ney) has one half hole, just the bottom hole in gheesh, and none in mokhalef. The third position (on C ney) has no half holes at all, but you can't use the bam for daramad. In a real performance the gushe's are much longer of course, this is just to show the fingerings and registers.

HOUMAN POURMEHDI is a master percussionist, well known for his diverse abilities as a musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Performing and recording in numerous ensembles and at a variety of venues. He was introduced to Persian music by his father, and received his first Tonbak at the age of three from his grandfather. He was privileged to study Tonbak under guidance of the late Grand Master Amir Nasser Eftetah. At sixteen he continued his studies at the Center for Preservation and Propagation of National Music, where he completed the techniques of playing Tonbak under supervision of Master Morteza Ayan. His interest in the spiritual path of Sufis introduced him to the Ghaderi Sufi order's virtuoso Daf players, such as Haj Agha Sadeghi, Mirza Agha Ghosi, and Darvish Karim, with whom he studied the heart-to-heart traditional techniques of playing Daf. Pourmehdi moved to Chicago in 1988, where he founded the society for the Advancement and Preservation of Traditional Persian Music and he study Persian Music Under supervision of Dr. Mehdi Forough, it was here that he first fathomed the exciting possibilities of introducing the unique sounds of Persian instruments to American audiences. He also preserved the ancient Persian Percussive instrument called Kurekeh. The Society also facilitated his meeting the eminent Mohammad Ali Kianey-Nejad, who taught him the Ney (Persian Reed Pipe).
