Finally, I had a chance to explore the great falls up close, actually as close as you can get: I walked down from the Niagara Falls Fallsview Casino to the Niagara River from where I had a great view of the American Falls. Just a few steps further I reached the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, the larger of the two. I had a quick lunch in the Table Rock Center and then headed into the basement where I started to explore a series of tunnels that terminate in two portals located behind the falls. Viewing the power of these majestic waterfalls from these openings and from the outside viewing platform is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

The decision to drive to the Niagara Falls on a weekend trip instead of taking the bus tour was finalized barely a day before. My brother rented a 7-seater van, while the womenfolk prepared the food and picnic stuff, and I scouted online for a place to stay overnight. All told, it was an exciting trip, and Niagara was spectacular! The most powerful waterfalls in North America, situated on the Niagara River, and drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, thus forming the international border between Canada and the US (in Buffalo, New York) are the Niagara Falls. It took us 7 hours of driving from NJ to Buffalo, stopping only at Syracuse for a service stop, and at Amherst to check in at Boulevard Inn, where we stayed overnight. From the Inn it was only 15 min. to the State Park (it took longer for us to find a parking place). Niagara Falls is composed of two major sections, separated by Goat Island: the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the American side. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls is also located on the American side, separated from the main falls by Luna Island. The international boundary line was originally drawn through Horseshoe Falls in 1819, but the boundary has long been in dispute due to natural erosion. The Skylon Tower, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is an observation tower that overlooks both the American Falls, New York and the larger Horseshoe Falls, Ontario from the Canadian side of the Niagara River. The tower has two restaurants at its top, the lower Revolving Dining Room and the upper Summit Suite Buffet. The Revolving Dining Room revolves once every hour by resting on a circular rail that is propelled by a 3 hp (2.2 kW) motor. An observation deck sits at the tower's summit. The base of the tower features a number of gift shops, fast food restaurants and a large amusement arcade. A floor for conventions is also available, but has been seldom utilized in recent years.
