SHOWstudio: Portent by Nick Knight

Our latest fashion film, Portent, is an exclusive short created by Nick Knight for thecorner.com, the virtual 'department store' launched by YOOX group. Marking the introduction of womenswear to thecorner.com's already impressive menswear roster, this video short presents Autumn/Winter 2009-10 fashion for men and women from Maison Martin Margiela, Haider Ackermann, Viktor & Rolf, Rick Owens and more. A delicate exploration of romantic Classicism through the male and femal form, styled by Simon Foxton and Jonathan Kaye and with extravagant setpieces devised by Michael Howells, this film uses fashion itself to express an allegorical love-story between man and woman - simultaneously showcasing exquisite clothing from a raft of the world's finest designers.

SHOWstudio: Lara Stone / Nick Knight / Carine Roitfeld - Krav Maga Self Defense

In La Femme à Paris the author Octave Uzanne dubbed a woman's clothing 'her offensive armour' - but, in reality, fashion seldom offers protection from the violence of the modern world. The clothing adopted when a woman is at her most vulnerable to attack - the heels, furs and jewels of evening attire - actively works against the idea of self-preservation. Nick Knight sought to challenge this: born from a desire to protect his own two teenage daughters and inspired by the 'Slutwalk' movement of women reclaiming the right to dress as they wish without being seen to invite attack, Knight decided to address the notion of self-defence through a fashion shoot. For this, he chose to collaborate with two much-celebrated and empowered female fashion figures - model Lara Stone, and stylist Carine Roitfeld - to redefine the notion of 'Power Dressing' for the twenty-first century. Specially trained for this shoot in the techniques of Krav Maga, a self-defence system developed by the Israeli Defence Forces, Stone defends herself in a series of scenarios whilst modelling a selection of Spring/Summer 2012's finest fashions, selected by Roitfeld and captured by Knight in stills for V magazine and on fashion film for SHOWstudio. These films serve two functions - showcasing next season's key styles, and offering instruction to women, a high-fashion 'how to' of self-defence. Pushing the boundaries of fashion editorial beyond aesthetic, and countering the 'Brutal Chic' of violent fashion ...

Make up your mind (2008) by Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben

Make up your mind (2008) Lorena Randi and Delphine Gaborit. If fashion is about selling desire to the masses, when it turns away from orthodox notions of beauty and attraction we must question the reasons behind it. There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in proportion, or so the saying goes, and indeed what stranger proportions have been seen in recent years than those proffered by Maison Martin Margiela, whose stock-in-trade seems to be calling into question those ideals of beauty previously considered irrefutable. Take their 'Wig-Coat' from Spring 2009 - not insignificantly their twentieth anniversary of fashion and anti-fashion creation. Maison Martin Margiela delved into the archives, blatantly quoting from past collections and reinventing their work. The coat, inspired by 1995's 'Wig-Vest', is a product of the Artisanal line, reworking preexisting clothing by hand into new permutations. As each piece is crafted from individual garments, no two pieces are exactly alike -- and hence can be seen as more art than article. In 1936, Meret Oppenheim created the ultimate Surrealist objet d'art by coating a tea-cup and spoon in Chinese gazelle fur. Tactile, perhaps. Aesthetically fascinating, certainly. But the thought of engaging with Oppenheim's Object as a functional utensil causes shivers of disgust. Equally, the idea of wearing Margiela's coat is cause for apprehension, even revulsion. If fashion is about selling desire to the masses, when it turns ...

Racsim in the Fashion Industry - Nick Knight - Naomi Campbell

Having addressed the tricky, tricksy and often veiled subject of body size hand-in-hand with the equally inflammatory subject of feminism in his first Political Fashion film, Nick Knight now chooses to tackle the outright taboo subject of racism in the fashion industry. Despite increasing diversity throughout contemporary society, is is undoubtedly true that black models feature in fashion far less than their white counterpoints. Nick's film not only questions this, but as a fashion 'insider' takes the industry to task over one of the last arenas where racism is apparently a tacitly-accepted fact of life.
