German hackers discover government spying

The German Chaos Computer Club has uncovered two recent instances of police using trojan spying programs on the computers of suspects they later arrested. The programs allowed remote users to take over webcams, listen in on internet phone calls and take screenshots every 30 seconds. All that would exceed the laws currently on the books in Germany, which only allow authorities to tap computers for phone calls. Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said the government would re-examine the software it was using but that internet telephone monitoring would continue. Greenpeace sails into new waters

Greenpeace, the environmental campaign group, launched a new ship that it hopes will play a big role in its future campaigns. The Rainbow Warrior III carries the name of another vessel that was bombed and sunk by the French secret service in 1985 after it attempted to disrupt France's nuclear-testing in the South Pacific. Built to rigorous specifications for safety and environmental friendliness, the new vessel is almost 60m long, can hit 14 knots using sailpower, makes its own water, and can stay at sea for months. Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports from the German port of Bremen.

Swiss exporters hurt by rise in value of Swiss franc

High growth, low unemployment and public debt, all seem to point towards the Swiss Franc being a safe bet. However, with the rest of the global markets in turmoil, a strong Swiss franc is having an effect on the people of Switzerland, and their businesses. It has now become too expensive for people overseas to purchase Swiss cheese, for example, so they switch from buying Swiss Emmenthal to an Emmenthal produced elsewhere. Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports from Zurich, Switzerland.

Germany rejects eurozone bailout challenge

Germany's top court has ruled that aid for Greece and rescue packages for other eurozone countries was legal but said parliament must have greater say in any future bailout deals. The Constitutional Court, based in Karlsruhe, western Germany, was responding to a challenge brought by six leading German Eurosceptics. In a landmark ruling, eagerly anticipated by jittery financial markets, the court said all "large-scale" future aid packages must be approved by the parliament's budget committee.
