Nickolas Ashford was one half of one of the greatest songwriting and singing teams in popular music. As a writer he co-wrote such golden Motown hits as "Precious Love" , "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "You're All I Need To Get By". As a recording act, Ashford & Simpson would go on to continue their success with hits such as "Found A Cure", "Every Street Corner", :"It Just Seems To Hang On" and "Solid". They were married for 38 years and had two daughters. Nick died at the age of 69 from throat cancer. But he isn't dead. His brilliance is brighter than ever. It just seems to hang on.

Granada's Brideshead Revisited is a true gem, with an ensemble of great acting from ALL the actors - everyone was just perfect and gave very accurate rendering of Waugh's original characters, from the leads to minor roles like Samgrass, Rex, Mulcaster... Gielgud, Olivier, and Claire Bloom are just so effortlessly good, up to their usual par; I especially think Bloom did an outstanding job playing a very difficult role, she had that exact "voice as quiet as a prayer and as powerful." And Nickolas Grace deserves a special ovation for his extraordinary performance as Anthony Blanch!

Valerie Simpson's was moved to make remarks at the funeral of her husband since 1974 Nickolas Ashford at which famed Pastor Calvin Butts presided. "I've got a lot to say about a great man. He was my soul mate. He was the man of my life. I'm going to miss my honey. I know he's looking down on us. I know he's happy." The service began with a solo by singer Roberta Flack, who hugged Simpson following the moving vocal of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Actresses Phylicia Rashad recited Maya Angelou's "When Great Trees Fall." "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is an R&B/soul song written by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson in 1966 for the Tamla Motown label. The composition was first successful as a 1967 hit single recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, becoming a hit again in 1970 when recorded by former Supremes frontwoman Diana Ross. The song became Ross's first solo number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award. After the Top 20 success of her first single, "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)", Ashford and Simpson had Ross re-record "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Initially, Ross was apprehensive, as she had previously covered the song as a member of the Supremes in a duet with The Temptations (see below). Eventually, however, she was convinced to make the recording. The cover produced a version similar to gospel with elements of classical music strings, spoken word passages from Ross, with the Andantes, Jimmy Beavers, and Ashford and Simpson as backing singers giving the song a soul and gospel vocal element. Motown chief Berry Gordy didn't like the record upon first hearing it. He hated the spoken-word passages and wanted the song to begin with the climactic chorus/bridge. It was not until radio stations nationwide were editing their own versions and adding it to their playlists that Ashford and Simpson were able to convince Gordy to release an edited three-minute version as a single.
