Niger a safe haven for Gaddafi loyalists

When most of the world had written off Niger as a failed state Muammar Gaddafi stretched his hand of help pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into development. It explains why Gaddafi's top lieutenants have been given asylum here and why the ousted leader may end up fleeing to Niger. Reports say four more officers arrived in the country - bringing the tally of defectors this week to almost 20. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from the capital, Niamey.

Hunger Season Looms For Drought-Prone Niger

Poor harvests in the impoverished West African country of Niger are again threatening families with prospect of a long hunger season. In many villages, only the women and children remain as men leave for neighboring Benin and Cote d'Ivoire in search of work. But there is still hope for this drought-prone country where projects already underway are turning arid desert into productive farmland.

Niger recieves more Malian refugees fleeing Tuareg violence

Djibril Oualid and his family are one of 2000 people who have escaped the Tuareg rebellion violence in the northern part of Mali, seeking refuge at Gaoudel in the Niger border village. Men, women and children are seen resting under makeshift huts for shelter. These refugees are happy to be safe despite the limited provision of food, water and medical supplies. Oualid said the rebels took everything away from them aside destroying their country. "I think that this is still early days of their arrival here in Niger and as it is very normal during this first few days of course they have needs about food, the basics needs like access to water, sanitation and so on," said Janet Lim, assistant High Commissioner for the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Although Niger is enduring a national food shortage and irregular rainfalls, the country continues to receive refugees with the help from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, by means of amenities distribution and setting up a new refugee camp to deal with incoming refugees. Neighboring countries, Mauritania and Algeria, UN allies are also accommodating refugees, while a call for a ceasefire and negotiations continue. According to Niger's government an estimated 25000 refugees are seeking refuge in Niger since the conflict initiated. Speaker: Janet Lim, assistant High Commissioner for the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Helen Clark visits Agadez in Niger

On 18 February 2012 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark traveled to the ancient city of Agadez in Niger where armed rebellions in the 1990s led to a period marked by violence and instability, resulting in increased poverty and vulnerability for the population. Agadez is also a transit point for migrants returning from Libya to countries in the region following the uprising in 2011. While in Agadez, she met with people participating in community-supported UNDP projects designed to reintegrate ex-combatants, demine neighborhoods, support livelihoods, and rehabilitate a degraded environment. Helen Clark was on a joint mission with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos to raise awareness of the looming food crisis in the Sahel and to build the foundations of an integrated regional approach between emergency and development. One third of Nigeriens suffer from food insecurity and 330000 children under five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition because of last year's poor harvest and high food prices. More than one million children under five are at risk in the region.

CARE Niger Trip March 2012

This video is a brief compilation of interviews, photos, and images from a recent trip to Niger by CARE USA's Tom Hanschman, Executive Director, Individual Fundraising and Marketing Team, Chicago. The purpose of the trip was for CARE staff to spend time with the women, men, and children with whom CARE works to build resiliency as they struggle each day to survive in the Sahel. Self-sufficiency and sustainability are the keys to success in the developing world, and the thoughts of the CARE Niger staff featured in the video prove this point. I welcome your own thoughts and impressions, and I appreciate your support of CARE's good work around the world. Many thanks to Mr. Johannes Schoors, CARE Niger's Country Director, for his and his staff's time, energy, commitment, and compassion.

Helen Clark Visit to Niger

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark and United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (OCHA) Valerie Amos arrived today in Niamey for a joint two-day visit to draw attention to the looming food and nutrition crisis in Niger and in the Sahel region. One third of Nigeriens suffer from food insecurity and 330000 children under five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition because of last year's poor harvest and high food prices. More than one million children under five are at risk in the region. "We know what is coming, and we know what to do to save lives. While we cannot stop this crisis from taking place, we are taking steps to avert a catastrophe. Across the Sahel region, international agencies have called for more than US $724 million to support national efforts to respond to the crisis. To date, donors have provided $135 million, and relief activities have already begun. But we need more resources now to prevent a large-scale crisis," said Valerie Amos. The joint mission aims to build the foundations of an integrated regional approach between emergency and development activities to help people in the region adjust to climate and other environmental changes and to strengthen their resilience and livelihood in the longer term. "While we cannot control droughts, we can control famine," said Helen Clark. "The humanitarian response must bridge to long-term development if Niger is to build ...

Qaddafi: Mixed Reaction in Niger

Libyan army vehicles were seen on Tuesday crossing the desert border into Niger and were believed to be carrying on board the now international fugitive Muammar Qaddafi. According to military sources a convoy of around 250 vehicles was escorted by the Nigerien army to the northern city of Agadez a deprived and non-coastal former French colony in the African state. A French military source said it was possible that Qaddafi was en route to Burkina Faso, where he has been offered asylum. However US officials believe the convoy was carrying senior officials and that Qaddafi is still in Libya, While opposition fighters furiously search the country in their hunt for the former leader now wanted dead or alive, there are some Nigeriens who seem more than happy to have him seek refuge in their country. "He can come and go as he pleases. He's our parent, our neighbour. Our parents who went there in search of money, they all came back because of the war. We don't have any problem with him coming to live in Niger," said Ibrahim Issa, a Niamey resident in Niger's capital. But his view is not shared by everyone. Many believe having Qaddafi in their country poses dangers. "If Qaddafi attempts to enter Niger we should chase him out. We don't need instability. Niger hasn't known instability so far. So it would be for nothing, if he comes to disturb us, because the rebels, what they did in Libya they can do in Niger too," said as Mrs Diaberi, also a Niamey resident. Shell Oil Poisoned Niger Delta. Shell ruined Nigeria

Shell Oil Poisoned Niger Delta. Shell ruined Nigeria Shell Nigeria is one of the largest oil producers in the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. 80% of the oil extraction in Nigeria is in the Niger Delta, the southeast region of the country. The Delta is home to many small minority ethnic groups, including the Ogoni, all of which suffer egregious exploitation by multinational oil companies, like Shell. Shell provides over 50% of the income keeping the Nigerian dictatorship in power. Although oil from Ogoniland has provided approximately $30 billion to the economy of Nigeria, the people of Ogoni see little to nothing from their contribution to Shell's pocketbook. Shell has done next to nothing to help Ogoni. By 1996, Shell employed only 88 Ogoni (0.0002% of the Ogoni population, and only 2% of Shell's employees in Nigeria). Ogoni villages have no clean water, electricity, abysmal health care, no jobs for displaced farmers and fisher persons and face the effects of unrestrained environmental molestation by Shell everyday. Since Shell began drilling oil in Ogoniland in 1958, the people of Ogoniland have had pipelines built across their farmlands and in front of their homes, suffered endemic oil leaks from these very pipelines, been forced to live with the constant flaring of gas. This environmental assault has smothered land with oil, killed masses of fish and other aquatic life, and introduced devastating acid rain to the land of the Ogoni. For the Ogoni, a people dependent upon ...
