Stravinsky's "Les Noces"--the Royal Ballet, Part 1/3

Zenaida Yanowsky and David Pickering as the Bride and Bridegroom. The Royal Ballet's version of Les Noces holds a special claim to authenticity and history, as it was staged by the original choreographer, Bronislava Nijinska in 1966, and documented with much detail. It was premiered on June 13, 1923, by the Ballets Russes. Nijinska's austere vision is one of celebration and ritual among the family and community, not so much with the two principals. Critic Alfred Kalisch, reviewing the London premiere of the ballet, described it as "enough to convert intending brides and bridegrooms to celibacy." As always, Stravinsky's music seems to make more sense when danced to. Robert Craft wrote: "The lament in the epithalamium at the end of Svadebka is as much for the loss of Holy Mother Russia as for the virginity of Nastasia Timofeyvna."

More from the creative tributaries that flowed from Diaghilev. The beautiful Nini Theilade dances Bronislava Nijinska's choreography. Nini Thielade is featured in the Ballets Russes documentary. In the interview she discusses Markova, a bit mockingly but also lovingly, I think. She also discussed doing 'recitals' when she was in her early teens before she was asked to dance in the BR. In the BR documentary, you can see an excerpt of Thielade's dancing in this film as the fairy handmaiden of Titania. Her arms and hands, not mention her face, are exquisite.

❤ Bolero de Ravel

Boléro is a one-movement orchestral piece by Maurice Ravel. Originally composed as a ballet commissioned by Russian ballerina Ida Rubenstein, the piece, which premiered in 1928, is Ravel's most famous musical composition. Before Boléro, Ravel had composed large scale ballets (such as Daphnis et Chloé, composed for the Ballets Russes 1909--1912), suites for the ballet (such as the second orchestral version of Ma Mère l'Oye, 1912), and one-movement dance pieces (such as La Valse, 1906--1920). Apart from such compositions intended for a staged dance performance, Ravel had demonstrated an interest in composing re-styled dances, from his earliest successes (the 1895 Menuet and the 1899 Pavane) to his more mature works like Le tombeau de Couperin (which takes the format of a dance suite).Boléro epitomises Ravel's preoccupation with restyling and reinventing dance movements. It was also one of the last pieces he composed before illness forced him into retirement: the two piano concertos and the Don Quichotte à Dulcinée song cycle were the only compositions that followed Boléro.The work had its genesis in a commission from the dancer Ida Rubinstein, who asked Ravel to make an orchestral transcription of six pieces from Isaac Albéniz' set of piano pieces, Iberia. While working on the transcription, Ravel was informed that the movements had already been orchestrated by Spanish conductor Enrique Arbós, and that copyright law prevented any other arrangement from being made.[3] When ...

Serge Lifar - Teaching

A pupil of Bronislava Nijinska, Serge Lifar was the last important permier danseur of the Ballets Russes of Serge de Diaghilev. He joined the company in 1923 and worked with Enrico Cecchetti in Milan to improve a not at the time formidable technique. For the Diaghilev company, he created leading roles in Leonide Massine's 'Zephyr et Flore' (1925), 'La Chatte' (1927) and in George Balanchine's 'Barabau' (1925). 'Apollon Musagete' (1928) and 'Le Fils Prodigue' (1929). Lifar later worked in Paris, most notably creating the title role in 'Icare', and performing Albrecht in 'Giselle'. He also worked as a choreographer and teacher. The footage shows Lifar in this latter phase of his life. Firstly, the dancer is seen in close-up, writing a document of some sort. Then in conversation with French writer and philosopher Jean Cocteau. After that he is filmed teaching a young ballerina, and then refining a pas de deux with two dancers. Finally, Lifar coaches a male dancer in the title role of 'Icare'. What's interesting about this last section of the footage is that Lifar demonstrates some of the porte de bras for the role - particularly where Icare dons his wire and gossamer wings.

A Great Native American Ballerina To Remember - Part 1

I've just been bowled over by film of Rosella Hightower on stage with one of the Ballets Russes companies and I just had to share it with you. The footage is of this great native American ballerina on stage performing 'Piège de Lumière', a ballet created for her by John Taras. In it, she is a butterfly in a tropical forest who enchants a group of escaped convicts. Hightower began her training with Dorothy Perkins in Kansas City. After seeing Léonide Massine performing in that city, she was invited by the Ballets Russes dancer to Monte Carlo to join a new company he was forming there. Arriving in Europe and finding the offer was only for further auditions, Hightower (ultimately) joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and it was in that company that she met André Eglevsky, who was later to become her partner. She joined Ballet Theatre in 1941 but returned to the Ballets Russes fold in 1946 to become a member of Colonel de Basil Ballet's Original Ballet Russe. In 1947 she joined the Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo also known as the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas or simply the de Cuevas Ballet - a decision taken due to the presence there of Bronislava Nijinska, who was to choreograph the virtuoso 'Rondo Capriccioso' for her. In 1962, Hightower opened the Centre de Danse Classique near her home in Cannes. Later she directed various major ballet companies - the Marseilles Ballet (1969--72), the Ballet of the Grand Théâtre of Nancy (1973-1974), the Paris Opéra Ballet (1980-1983 ...
