He asked me to appear live in the studio, and he also wanted to send a TV crew to my hotel. This is the resulting video. It was broadcasted on RCTI television on 24th of october 2008. RCTI is one of the largest nationwide television channels in Indonesia, also available on cable in Malaysia and Singapore.

Chrisye was a legend in the Indonesian music scene. He has made a lot of albums with beautiful songs, with great melodies. I listen to his music very often. The title of the song is "Telah pergi sahabat tercinta" (Already gone, our dearest friend), by Dian Pramana Poetra and Deddy Dhukun. In this song they describe what they felt when they heard the news about the death of their dear friend. I discovered the mp3 of the original version of the song on the internet while searching for Indonesian music. After publication of this video on YouTube I was soon contacted by Chrisyes daughter Risty. We did not know each other at that time, so you can imagine what a great surprise this was for me. I had never imagined that Chrisye's family would ever watch this video. You can still read her touching words in one of the comments below. We had frequent email exchanges. Through her, and her sister Nissa, I learned that the song that I had covered was never publicly released. It was a miraculous coincidence that I had discovered this song on the internet. Riyanto in the 1970s, and has already been performed by many Indonesian artists. My cover is based on the version by Chrisye, released on his album Dekade (2004). This album is a tribute to the history of Indonesian pop music. Chrisye sings the duet together with Sophia Latjuba. I like this version of the song very much, because of the beautiful combination of the vocals, the brilliant arrangement by Erwin Gutawa and the laid back overall atmosphere. My recording contains acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, electronic drums, strings, Rhodes piano and vibraphone. As you can see on the clip I play all instruments myself, some of them obviously on my keyboard. The female singer is my girlfriend Lucie, who composed the video as well. We have recorded this video in early spring on our favorite spot. Each season has its beauty, but early spring is truly wonderful. Young, delicate leaves with beautiful colors open up and dance like little lanterns in the wind. The sun twinkles through all this young green beauty. Breathtakingly beautiful. The audience consisted of children attending elementary school, of various nationalities. There were teachers and other staff members as well. The video shows the entire performance uncut. It also includes a summary of the introductory conversation with Butch Koltai, the vice-principal of the school. It was a great pleasure for me to sing at JIS. The audience clapped and sang along so nice, and the entire atmosphere was very inspiring. I strongly support the mission of JIS about creative individuals and responsible world citizenship. That includes the respect for different cultures, including "kebudayaan Indonesia". I was really surprised that kids from all nationalities knew the lyric of the song Balonku and sang along spontaneously. The raw video footage was provided by JIS. I heard this song for the first time in Makassar, Sulawesi, 2006. It was very well played by a cover band in the outside area of a hotel, a terrace, partially built above the sea. I still remember the tropical sea breeze and the beautiful sunset when I listen to this song nowadays. In my recording I took the freedom to add some additional guitar solo's and background guitar arrangements.

There were six performances (mine included) of Chrisye songs Kisah Cintaku, Cintaku, Zamrud Khatulistiwa, Anak Jalanan, Kala Surya Tenggelam and Sendiri Lagi. The sons of Chrisye, Pasha and Masha, took part in the event as well. The song Usah Kau Lara Sendiri was originally sung by Ruth Sahanaya and Katon Bagaskara. The translation of the title is Don't despair all alone. This cover version with the accompanying video was made in memory of the tsunami in December 2004 and is dedicated to all victims of this tragic disaster. The video also represents the personal story of Ella Meilianda, from Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Since 2004 Ella is doing her PhD research in the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands. Her research is about the changes of coastal morphology in the tsunami-affected area. 19th of June 2009 is the day of her PhD promotion. The tsunami has heavily affected her life, her family, her city, and her research. Ella wants to do something meaningful for the victims of the tsunami, therefore she dedicates her research to them. Furthermore, directly after the PhD defence ceremony Ella and me, Peter Fennema, gave a live performance of this song with the video projected on the background. This is one of my biggest music projects until now, in the recording I play all instruments myself, without any other musicians. The chord pattern is roughly: D-DM7-D9, Bm (and playing the same pattern as the D chord), followed by a G, then A. When you reach the part, "Kau adalah darahku...", the chords being played are: D then A (then hammer-on the "sus" or sustained") then a chord that looks like D with a G bass. I can't explain the rest (yet) :-P
