It's EASY to grow stuff in straw bales. I planted a piece of a potato into a straw bale, right on top of concrete (where I had no soil, no soil container, etc), and sure enough the spuds grew fine. They should be ready to harvest in a few weeks. It will be super EASY to harvest, since I won't even need to "dig" for the spuds, just use my hand to pull them out of the straw... what could be easier? :-)

I planted several sweet potato plants in this container, vardamen and beaurgard varieties, both are excellent tasting. Sweet Potatoes can get pretty big within a season, I have had some sweet potatoes that I planted in the ground the size of a football, and that is no lie.. I really don't like them to get that big but if I wait till our first frost this can happen. So I decided this year to try my luck of planting sweet potatoes in containers, and it turns out it works. Sweet Potato plants like heat and sun conditions , and I found they like plenty of moisture too. You can harvest your sweet potatoes usually after the first frost however I wouldn't be afraid to check them earlier. Without pulling out the entire plant and digging the whole plant, just go alongside the mounded plant and use a trough and see if you can find a few . Now with the sweet potatoes in a container it may be a little trickier to dig but still doable. The plastic container I planted the sweet potatoes in was approximately 3ft around x2ft deep , I wanted to make sure it would be large enough. This seems to work . I will make another video when I actually harvest the sweet potatoes, which should be soon.

Greetings! Today I would like to introduce a series that I have been thinking about for a long time. Preppers Pantry, pantry meals, will help all of us use our food storage to its greatest advantage. To give you some background, for about 2 years I have been putting back a supply of food and other items to be used in the event of an emergency, whether it be personal, natural or economic. With the way the world is today, you just never know what could happen tomorrow. Additionally, it is a good idea for all of us to prepare in some way should an emergency strike. I started small, adding a few extra cans or boxes of shelf stable food to my regular pantry. I always store what my family will eat because if we are thrust into a situation where we have to eat beans and rice and I have never cooked beans and rice, no one is going to be happy. When you are placed in a stressful situation, it is best to have things to eat that are familiar and comforting. My few cans extra every grocery trip turned into my husband and I converting a coat closet into an additional larder and then blossomed into him creating a can rotator cabinet, recently we built a loft system for bucket packed items and are now considering more cabinets in our kitchen to maximize our storage potential. All of these things happened over time and with frugal means of implementation. Dont be overwhelmed and dont be scared. This is something I'm trying out this year. I got the idea from the idea of raising potatoes in tires. I didn't have a bunch of old tires sitting around, (nor did I really want them!), so when I saw these bags advertised at Farmtek.com for $8.95 each, I thought they might do the trick. And in the Fall, when the potatoes are done growing and harvested, I can use them for leaves too. Also, I read an article on the Backwoodshome magazine site about raising potatoes in straw and composted manure. . . Hmmm. So, here I am combining the two -- raising potatoes "vertically" by mulching them with some some waste hay with goat manure mixed in.
