Thomas Nozkowski Recent Work at PACEWILDENSTEIN

James Kalm is privileged to bring viewers this report on the opening night of Thomas Nozkowski's debut exhibition at PaceWildenstein Gallery. Because of his contrarian approach to abstraction, and his lone stance challenging many of the accepted modes of New York painting, Nozkowski has battled the consensus of the "tastemakers". With over three decades of production that has earned him the loyalty of an underground following, the "mainstream" has caught up. Featuring comments by Thomas Nozkowski, Chris Martin and Eric Schoonebeek

Thomas Nozkowski at FISHER LANDAU CENTER FOR ART

James Kalm treks to Long Island City's Fisher Landau Center for Art to bring viewers unauthorized footage of this mini-retrospective by one of New York's most admired abstract painters. Noskowski has built a reputation through his contrarian impulses as much as his virtuoso facility and encyclopedic knowledge of painting technique. Preferring to work on a small scale, many of these pieces are painted on canvas boards at 16 x 20 inches. This show is no doubt a teaser for his up-coming exhibition at PaceWildenstein later this month.

Thomas Nozkowski: Alone Together Solitude and Collaboration in Contemporary Art

In the context of an individual artist's career, the relation between the individual and collaborative action is examined. The navigation between the public and the private is an important but seldom discussed aspect of an artist's life. The lecture is illustrated with images of Nozkowski's recent paintings and drawings. Thomas Nozkowski is a painter who has had seventy one-person shows of his work since 1979. He is a Guggenheim fellow and is a newly elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters where he received the Medal of Merit in 2006.
Nozkowskiland

Nozkowskiland A slide-show devoted to the work of abstract painter Thomas Nozkowski. Nozkowski was born in Teaneck, NJ, in 1944, and educated at Cooper Union in New York City. He has consistently worked in a way which places him somewhat outside the main trends in abstract painting for the past 30 years. His decision to work on a small scale was partly motivated by his radical politics which left him with a deep suspicion towards the institutions and corporate lobbies in which the large-scale paintings of his peers were displayed. 'Nozkowskiland' is the name given by the critic Peter Schjeldahl to the abstract world this work evokes, though as he says in the video, it is often inspired by prosaic events from his daily life. .The accompanying music is 'do while' by Oval. A Fare Slice (IC NYC Episode 3)

In 1980, New Yorker Eric Bram noticed that for twenty years the price of a subway token had tended to match the price of a slice of pizza. Thirty years later, his hypothesis still holds true. The question we wanted answered is WHY. Are the MTA and the various supposedly independent pizza shops involved in collusion - or who's taking their pricing cues from who? And what about the dollar pizza spots that have been popping up all over Manhattan recently -- could these be predicting a lower cost transit authority appearing in our future? en.wikipedia.org Directed by Casimir Nozkowski Edited by Corinne Marro Original Music by Bless 1 Producers: Robin Oye, Jesse Wilson, Cornelius van Gorkom

We didn't contrive any of their motion. We just tried to anticipate where they might roll or be kicked around and let them do their thing on the way to and from Canarsie and then Coney Island.

David Cohen's Decameron, and Joe Zito's Not Even the Saints...

James Kalm is back on his bike for the 2010 season opener, and he starts this frenzy of activity by stopping in to pay tribute to David Cohen and his curatorial prowess at the historic New York Studio School. "Decameron" celebrates a decade of exhibitions by presenting some of the artist who have received recognition at the NYSS, including: Philip Pearlstein, Milton Resnick, Mernet Larsen, Graham Nickson, Sean Scully, Frances Barth, Rosemarie Beck, Thomas Nozkowski and many others. Trekking to Chelsea we visit "Not Even the Saints Can Help" the culmination of two years work by Joe Zito at Lennon, Weinberg Gallery. Inspired by the structure of a ship's hull, Zito designed and built the wooden structure in his studio in Red Hook Brooklyn. This form was further extrapolated in a series of drawings, models and works on paper that approach single image abstraction.
