Busby: Fukushima 'criminal event' calls for investigation

A newly released report on the Fukushima nuclear crisis says it was down to the plant's operators being ill-prepared and not responding properly to the earthquake and tsunami disaster. A major government inquiry said some engineers abandoned the plant as the trouble started and other staff delayed reporting significant radiation leaks. Professor Christopher Busby, scientific secretary to the European Committee on Radiation Risks, says health damage after contamination will be more serious than Japan announced. Radiation Poisoning? Japan Fukushima nuclear crisis explained

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com The situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan worsens as a second explosion is reported, intensifying fears of the possibility of nuclear meltdown triggered by last week's huge earthquake. At least seven are missing with several others hurt after the blast - which is not however believed to have pierced the structure containing the reactor's core. Meanwhile crews are fighting to cool down the overheated radioactive fuel rods at the plant to avert a catastrophic nuclear meltdown. Christopher Simons, a professor at a Tokyo university, explains how an explosion might occur, and what the worst-case scenario could mean for local residents...

The Japanese response to the Fukushima nuclear crisis: Forgetting the history of Hiroshima

I am an American and have been living in Japan for 4 years. I care deeply about my adopted home and have nothing but sensitivity and respect for the hardships the Japanese have faced in the past and are facing now. Despite living here and learning so much about the Japanese, considering their history and their often seemingly cautious and conservative nature (particularly when it comes to matters of "safety"), I am having difficulty making sense of the nation's response to to the Fukushima nuclear crisis which was touched off by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. While I acknowledge varying opinions and various opposing movements within Japan, in general it is still a group-oriented society which values uniformity and similar thinking. The country's population is 98% Japanese and the Japanese people often use phrases such as "we Japanese". Therefore I feel it is OK to refer to "the Japanese" as if they were a single group for the purpose of some discussions. This is more difficult to do with other countries which have more internal diversity. Notes: The world "nuclear" is an adjective, but is also informally used as a noun: dictionary.reference.com I use it as a blanket term to refer to nuclear weapons, energy, etc.

As Japan Nuclear Crisis Worsens, Citizen Radiation Monitors Call for Greater Evacuation. 1 of 2

DemocracyNow.org - Robert Alvarez, former senior policy adviser to the US Secretary of Energy Democracy Now! interviews two experts about the Japanese nuclear crisis including Aileen Mioko Smith of Green Action and Robert Alvarez, former senior policy adviser to the US Secretary of Energy. Almost three months after the earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear disaster in Japan, new radiation "hot spots" may require the evacuation of more areas further from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility. Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency recently admitted for the first time that full nuclear meltdowns occurred at three of the plant's reactors, and more than doubled its estimate for the amount of radiation that leaked from the plant in the first week of the disaster in March. Watch Part 2 of 2: www.youtube.com "What they failed to mention is that they discharged and equally large amount into the ocean," says Alvarez. "As [the radiation] goes up the food chain, it accumulates. By the time it reaches people who consume the food, the levels are higher than originally when they entered the environment." Smith says citizens leading their own monitoring efforts and are calling for additional evacuations, especially for young children and pregnant women. Nuclear Nightmare: Nagasaki shares fears over Fukushima crisis

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com Radiation levels in some areas around Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant are 1600 times higher than normal. Meanwhile, the nuclear crisis in Japan has evoked fears that a new atomic catastrophe could devastate the country. The only nation to ever feel the force of a nuclear weapon, Japan still remembers the horror of the event 65 years on. RT's Ivor Bennett reports from Nagasaki.

Nuclear Engineer Arnie Gundersen on Japan Nuclear Crisis: "This Could Become Chernobyl on Steroids"

DemocracyNow.org - Japan is on the verge of a nuclear catastrophe after a third explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was heavily damaged by Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami. The blast seriously damaged the plant's Number Two reactor's steel containment structure, causing nearby radiation levels to rise to eight times the legal limit for exposure in a year. Plant workers "were manually opening valves into into these containments to keep the pressure from building up," says nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen, in an interview with Democracy Now! March 15. "I would suspect that a lot of those efforts have been abandoned because of high radiation levels," Gundersen says. Arnie Gundersen has been nuclear industry executive for many years before blowing the whistle on the company he worked for in 1990, when he found inappropriately stored radioactive material. NIBIRU/ELENIN UNDERWAY: FUKUSHIMA NUCLEAR HAS WORSENED 26 TIMES MORE THAN HIROSHIMA!!!

SERIOUS ALERT!!! EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT OF NUCLEAR DISASTER. 'Fukushima leaks equal 168 Hiroshimas'. Japanese nuclear scientists say the amount of radioactive cesium-137 released from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the environment is 168 times that of Hiroshima bomb. According to a government calculation published in the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper, the levels of cesium-137 leaked from the crisis-stricken plant has been estimated at 15000 terabecquerels, AFP reported on Thursday. That compares with the 89 terabecquerels released by "Little Boy" -- the nuclear bomb the United States dropped on Japan's western city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 as World War II was in its final stages. Tokyo government, however, argued that the comparison was not valid since there is no logical comparison between Hiroshima bomb and Fukushima disaster. "An atomic bomb is designed to enable mass-killing and mass-destruction by causing blast waves and heat rays and releasing neutron radiation," the Tokyo Shimbun daily quoted an unnamed government official as saying. "It is not rational to make a simple comparison only based on the amount of isotopes released," the official added. An estimated 140000 people died instantly in Hiroshima or succumbed to burns and radiation sickness soon after the attack and another 70000 were injured. Sixty-six years after the mass-killing and mass-destruction, the United States still refuses to apologize to Japan. The Fukushima plant has ...
