On 10-17 April 2009, Dr. Pascal Lee and his team drove the Moon-1 Humvee Rover over a record-breaking 500 km on arctic sea-ice from Kugluktuk to Cambridge Bay, along the fabled Northwest Passage. The Moon-1 Humvee Rover, developed with the support of AM General LLC of Mishawaka, IN, serves as a concept vehicle used by the Mars Institute and NASA on the Haughton-Mars Project to learn how to design and operate future pressurized rovers for the human exploration of the Moon and Mars. Expedition members also included Joe Amarualik, Mark Carroll, John W. Schutt, and Jesse Weaver. To stay warm during their historic arctic trek, all members of the Northwest Passage Drive Expedition wore Sorel boots and slept in Mountain Hardwear sleeping bags. Partners and official sponsors of the Mars Institute Haughton-Mars Project and Northwest Passage Drive Expedition include NASA, Canadian Space Agency, Air National Guard, SETI Institute, National Space Biomedical Research Institute, Simon Fraser University, Cornell University, University of Alberta, AM General, ARB, Bassett Petroleum Distributors of Yellowknife, Bombardier Recreational Products, First Air, Geonics, Hamilton Sundstrand, Kawasaki, Kikiak of Kugluktuk, Kitnuna of Cambridge Bay, Mattracks, Mountain Hardwear, Musk Foundation, Pelican Signs, Pull-Pal, RTL Robinson Enterprises, Shokolade Cafe, Sorel, SpaceRef Interactive, and Jules Verne Adventures. (Video filmed on 11 April 2009).
