This 30fps video shows asteroid (762) Pulcova, discovered in 1913 by Russian astronomer Grigory Neujmin. It is named for the Pulcova Observatory in Saint Petersburg. Magnitude 12.2 star TYC 2314-01655-1 appears to merge with Pulcova, but you are actually watching the asteroid pass in front of the star as seen from our vantage point at the 1.5M telescope at the San Pedro Martir Observatory in North Baja California, Mexico on October 7-8, 2009

Occultation of a 16 magnitude star by dwarf planet Eris on November 6th, 2010. The observation was performed with a 40 cm. robotic telescope from The Andalusian Astrophysics Institute (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Granada, Spain) and Astroimagen ( www.astroimagen.com ). The telescope is located at San Pedro de Atacama (Chile). The star can be seen centered in the field, where the arrow is pointing, and it clearly shows how it disappears beneath Eris disk, and how it shortly emerges afterwards. This occultation will allow to determine very precisely the size of the object. Eris is a trans-Neptunian object and the most distant object for which such an occultation has been detected, being at 96.6 Astronomical Units at the moment at which the occultation occurred.

This is an occultation of the star Iota in Cancer by the asteroid 411 Xanthe. It was shot with a camcorder held to the eyepiece of my 10" SCT telescope. Location is about 10 miles north of Gainesville, Florida, USA.

The two stars are separated in the sky by just 1.5 arc seconds (One arc second is 1 of a degree). Because fantastic resolving power of the Hale using adaptive optics you can see that the light of the star nearest to Titan is being refracted by Titan's dense atmosphere. Such events are rare, but valuable. The starlight as it is seen passing through Titan's atmosphere is essentially a probe providing clues as to the density, temperature and wind patterns of this distant world. The team of astronomers (Antonin Bouchez, Michael E. Brown, Mitchell Troy, Rick S. Burruss, Richard G. Dekany and Robert A. West) that observed this event December 20, 2001 was fortunate that both of the stars were seen to pass behind Titan. This provided two passes through Titan's atmosphere - effectively doubling what could be learned from the event."

On September 3, 2011, the moon passed in front of the star Delta Scorpius (the head of Scorpio). The actual event lasted a little less than an hour. I've pulled the important bits together here. The Bright dot at the beginning of the video is the star Delta Scorpius. The bright object filling the bottom right is the moon. After the cut the star reemerges from behind the moon - and I have trouble keeping the telescope steady. This was the first time I used this particular setup (webCam and telescope) for a video, so it's a bit rough. Occultations like this don't come around often so I had to grab my chance ready or not. A somewhat rare astronomical event which will not re-occur for another twenty years. The next one will occur on Oct. 11, 2029. The crescent moon drifts in its orbit towards Venus, and slowly covers up the planet, which is 17% lit at this time. These events are called occultations, and the sight was quite beautiful, despite a few obscuring clouds. Hope you enjoy.

Tom recorded the shadow of asteroid (503) Evelyn created as the asteroid eclipsed or occulted a star, and Tom had his video gear in the path of that shadow. Five people observed this grazing occultation 40km north of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia (near Bardoc). The scope for this video was an ETX125 - which was poorly aligned (because of major cloud problems leading up to the event). It also did not handle the wind well, with backlash in the drive not helping. The event lasts 4 minutes. The initial disappearance of Antares was missed. After a period Antares B reappears - and is visible by itself for a total of 113 seconds. There are two faint 'flashes' of B at 46m 31 and 33 secs. The final reappearance of Antares is gradual due to the diameter of the star.
