Phil Ochs - The Ringing of Revolution

*I am in no way affiliated with the content in this video nor am I trying to take credit for it* Phil wrote this song in 1st person, telling the story of the last of the bourgeois during a revolution, very creative and inspiring song. Phil Ochs - "The Ringing of Revolution" In a building of gold, with riches untold, lived the families on which the country was founded. And the merchants of style, with their red velvet smiles, were there, for they also were hounded. And the soft middle class crowded in to the last, for the building was fully surrounded. And the noise outside was the ringing of revolution. Sadly they stared and sank in their chairs and searched for a comforting notion. And the rich silver walls looked ready to fall As they shook in doubtful devotion. The ice cubes would clink as they freshened their drinks, wet their minds in bitter emotion. And they talked about the ringing of revolution. We were hardly aware of the hardships they beared, for our time was taken with treasure. Oh, life was a game, and work was a shame, And pain was prevented by pleasure. The world, cold and grey, was so far away In the distance only money could measure. But their thoughts were broken by the ringing of revolution. The clouds filled the room in darkening doom as the crooked smoke rings were rising. How long will it take, how can we escape Someone asks, but no one's advising. And the quivering floor responds to the roar, In a shake no longer surprising. As closer and closer ...

Phil Ochs -- Love me, I'm a liberal

İ cried when they shot Medgar Evers Tears ran down my spine I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy As though I'd lost a father of mine But Malcolm X got what was coming He got what he asked for this time So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal I go to civil rights rallies And I put down the old DAR I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy I hope every colored boy becomes a star But don't talk about revolution That's going a little bit too far So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal I cheered when Humphrey was chosen My faith in the system restored I'm glad the commies were thrown out of the AFLCIO board I love Puerto Ricans and Negros as long as they don't move next door So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal The people of old Mississippi Should all hang their heads in shame I can't understand how their minds work What's the matter don't they watch Les Crain? But if you ask me to bus my children I hope the cops take down your name So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal I read New republic and Nation I've learned to take every view You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden I feel like I'm almost a Jew But when it comes to times like Korea There's no one more red, white and blue So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal I vote for the democratic party They want the UN to be strong I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts He sure gets me singing those songs I'll send all the money you ask for But don't ask me to come on along So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal ...
Phil Ochs- Outside A Small Circle of Friends

Look outside the window, there's a woman being grabbed They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed Maybe we should call the cops and try to stop the pain But Monopoly is so much fun, I'd hate to blow the game And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody Outside of a small circle of friends. Riding down the highway, yes, my back is getting stiff Thirteen cars are piled up, they're hanging on a cliff. Maybe we should pull them back with our towing chain But we gotta move and we might get sued and it looks like it's gonna rain And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody Outside of a small circle of friends. Sweating in the ghetto with the colored and the poor The rats have joined the babies who are sleeping on the floor Now wouldn't it be a riot if they really blew their tops? But they got too much already and besides we got the cops And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody Outside of a small circle of friends. Oh there's a dirty paper using sex to make a sale The Supreme Court was so upset, they sent him off to jail. Maybe we should help the fiend and take away his fine. But we're busy reading Playboy and the Sunday New York Times And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody Outside of a small circle of friends Smoking marihuana is more fun than drinking beer, But a friend of ours was captured and they gave him thirty years Maybe we should raise our voices, ask somebody why But demonstrations are a drag, besides we're much too high And I'm sure it wouldn't ...

Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune (Documentary) In theaters: January 5th, 2011 Copyright © 2010 First Run Features Director: Kenneth Bowser Cast: Joan Baez, Tom Hayden, Pete Seeger, Sean Penn, Peter Yarrow, Christopher Hitchens, Ed Sanders As our country continues to embroil itself in foreign wars and pins its hopes on a new leader's promise for change, Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune is a timely and relevant tribute to an unlikely American hero. Over the course of a meteoric music career that spanned two turbulent decades, Phil Ochs sought the bright lights of fame and social justice in equal measure - a contradiction that eventually tore him apart. From youthful idealism to rage to pessimism, the arch of Ochs' life paralleled that of the times, and the anger, satire and righteous indignation that drove his music also drove him to dark despair. In this brilliantly constructed film, interview and performance footage of Ochs is illuminated by the ruminations of Joan Baez, Tom Hayden, Pete Seeger, Sean Penn, Peter Yarrow, Christopher Hitchens, Ed Sanders, and others. Phil Ochs - Here's to The State of Mississippi

Phil Ochs - Here's to The State of Mississippi Here's to the state of Mississippi, For Underheath her borders, the devil draws no lines, If you drag her muddy river, nameless bodies you will find. Whoa the fat trees of the forest have hid a thousand crimes, The calender is lyin' when it reads the present time. Whoa here's to the land you've torn out the heart of, Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of! Here's to the people of Mississippi Who say the folks up north, they just don't understand And they tremble in their shadows at the thunder of the Klan The sweating of their souls can't wash the blood from off their hands They smile and shrug their shoulders at the murder of a man Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of Here's to the schools of Mississippi Where they're teaching all the children that they don't have to care All of rudiments of hatred are present everywhere And every single classroom is a factory of despair There's nobody learning such a foreign word as fair Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of Here's to the cops of Mississippi They're chewing their tobacco as they lock the prison door Their bellies bounce inside them as they knock you to the floor No they don't like taking prisoners in their private little war Behind their broken badges there are murderers and more Oh, here's to the land you've torn out ...

Phil Ochs - The Party

Phil Ochs, a political song-writer for the most part, wrote this song which, to me, seemed to come from out of the clear blue sky. But then I realized that this is just a scathing indictment of high society. The ending is the best part. But there are other great parts, too. "counting notches on his thigh bone." Haha, that dude is just bored as fuck. It's some really remarkable writing, with a great melody to boot. I sit and listen to this for an hour straight sometimes, when I've been drinking. I found a tab of it, too, if you want to play it on guitar G cg The fire breathing rebels arrive at the party early, C d Their khaki coats are hung in the closet near the fur. C dg -em Asking handouts from the ladies, while they criticize the lords. E dg em Boasting of the murder of the very hands that pour. C dg em And the victims learn to giggle, for at least they are not bored. Am d And my shoulders had to shrug Am As I crawl beneath the rug D g And retune my piano. The hostess is enormous, she fills the room with perfume, She meets the guests and smothers them with greetings. And she asks how are you as she offers them a drink, The countess of the social grace, who never seems to blink. And she promises to talk to you, if you promise not to think. And my shoulders had to shrug, as I crawled beneath the rug And retuned my piano. The beauty of the hour is blazing in the present, She surrounds herself with those who would surrender. Phil Ochs: The Life and Legacy of a Legendary American Folk Singer. 1 of 2

democracynow.org - The legendary American folk singer Phil Ochs is widely regarded as one of the world's most influential political musicians. Rising to fame in the 1960s, Ochs used his music to both chronicle and help mobilize the labor rights, civil rights, and antiwar movements. A new documentary, "Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune," has just been released chronicling Ochs' life. Democracy Now! speaks with Phil Ochs' brother, Michael, and the director of the film, Kenneth Bowser, which premiered yesterday in New York City. Phil Ochs : Chords Of Fame

Of all the protest singers who emerged from the Greenwich Village scene of New York City in the early 1960s, few -then or in retrospective - were as genuine or as committed as Phil Ochs. Ochs may have been in the shadow of another Mid Western boy, but his songs stand up to the comparison and many are as relevant today as when he wrote them. While others sought the hit parade, Ochs stayed true to his beliefs, singing on the university campuses and on the protest marches. To a degree this denied him the widepsread popularity others chased, which at times frustrated him. As Tom Paxton put it: Ochs believed he was next in line - and then he died. Chords of Fame; the theme song for a heroic but ultimately tragic story.

Philip David Ochs (December 19, 1940--April 9, 1976) was a US protest singer (or, as he preferred, a "topical singer"), songwriter, musician and recording artist who was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, earnest humanism, political activism, insightful and alliterative lyrics, and haunting voice. He wrote hundreds of songs in the 1960s and released eight LP record albums in his lifetime. He performed at many political events, anti-Vietnam War and civil rights rallies, student events, and at organized labor events over the course of his career, in addition to many concert appearances at such venues as New York City's The Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. Politically, Ochs described himself as a "left social democrat" who turned into an "early revolutionary" after the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which had a profound effect on his state of mind.[1] He was often seen as a radical and also a patriot — though he was also interested in differing political philosophies as well as journalism, and was an avid fan of music and movies. After years of prolific writing in the 1960s, Ochs' mental stability declined in the 1970s and eventually he succumbed to a number of problems including bipolar disorder, depression, and alcoholism, and he took his own life in 1976.

Phil Ochs : Live in Vancouver 1970

"Amchitka" is a 2009 two-CD release of a recording of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Phil Ochs performing an October 16, 1970, benefit concert at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, Canada. (note: the opening titles on the video incorrectly name the date as 1972). The event funded Greenpeace's protests of 1971 nuclear weapons tests by the US Atomic Energy Commission at Amchitka, Alaska. Irving Stowe, one of Greenpeace's founding members, organized the benefit concert with the assistance of Joan Baez. She could not appear, but she connected Stowe with Joni Mitchell, and Mitchell requested her boyfriend of the time, James Taylor, join the concert. The Stowe family held on to tapes of the concert, but were not able to obtain the necessary clearances until John Timmins, brother of Cowboy Junkies members, became involved with Greenpeace. Timmins was instrumental in contacting Mitchell and Taylor's representatives and working out the necessary permissions to release the concert. You can purchase this rare two-cd recording at www.amchitka-concert.com (proceeds to Greenpeace). Many of the photographs in the video are from Mark Millman.( http ). Tribute to my father - Phil Ochs - When Im Gone

This song means alot to me. I think its a perfect song to represent my father at his passing. My father had spent his life majorly involved in politics and was a devout liberal. My father was also involved in sports his entire life. That is, until we recently discovered paintball and started up a team, the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers of Illinois. His life revolved around these 2 things. He loved helping people, and he loved paintball. These 2 things are what made him truely happy. These past few years, he has said, were the happiest years of his life, simply because he got to bond with me and my uncle, his brother, Stephen. Rest in peace, and let the dream live on.

John Wesley Harding - Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, David Blue and Me

At night, he sits alone and he's looking at the stars Listens to them playing guitars Him and Phil go back a long long way They talked about marching and dying all in one day They played songs together, they sit up past the dawn I wonder how long this dream will go on You know that Bob was there last week as well Well he's a quiet guy but he's got stories to tell Our hero sits and listens without asking why And teaches Bob 'A minor' with a glint in his eye Bob used it on Hollis Brown, that was sometime ago When is this dream gonna stop? Heaven knows Then our hero picks up his guitar To play them the only tune he knows He played it to me once He said 'Wes, it's short, but this is how it goes' And then he sings He sings 'This is the only thing that really matters Keeps me going, retains my sanity The nights I spend alone when there's just Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, David Blue and me' You know David died and Steven died But only to the papers that live outside Last Thursday they were in the room where he sits The three of them making jokes about the meager obits Steve and David smiled and they left quite soon He wonders about this dream as he looks at the stars and the moon Sometimes he has a party for him and the crew They turn up on time just cos they always do Phil plays I Ain't Marching, it's his favorite song And Bob plays the harmonica but he plays it all wrong And Steve harmonizes just like he did with John Prine David just sits and looks blue all the time ...

Raua Needmine - OCHS (June 4, 2010)

This is quite possibly the first time this piece has ever been performed by a High School choir in the US. In my opinion, this is the most complex, powerful, emotional and amazing modern choral folk piece ever written. These kids were PERFECT! Curse Upon Iron (translated) music: Veljo Tormis; lyrics from Kalevala; Ohoy, villain! Wretched iron! Wretched iron! Cursed bog ore! You flesh-eater, Gnawer of bones! You spiller of innocent blood! Wicked, how did you come to power? Tell how you became so naughty! Damn you, bastard! Wretched iron! I know your birth, you purblind fool, I know well your source, you evil! Once there walked three nature spirits, three fiery daughters of the sky. They milked their swelling breasts to the Earth, They squeezed their milk into the fens. From the first maid spurted black milk, this turned into soft wrought iron. White milk squirted the second maid, this was the source of tempered steel. The third maid spouted blood-red milk, This gave birth to bog iron ore. I know your birth, you purblind fool, I know well your source, you evil! Then you were not high and mighty, not yet mighty, not yet haughty, when you moaned in the white-hot furnace, Whined under beating hammers. Saliva was brought from a viper, venom from a black snake! For iron would not harbor evil Without saliva from snakes. Shelter us, supreme Creator! Keep us safe, God Almighty! So that mankind will not perish, mother's child vanish without a trace.

"Ballad of Medgar Evers" - Phil Ochs

Another very underrated song that I didn't find in Youtube, so I uploaded it. Enjoy. Lyrics: In the state of mississippi many years ago A boy of 14 years got a taste of southern law He saw his friend a hanging and his color was his crime And the blood upon his jacket left a brand upon his mind Chorus: too many martyrs and too many dead Too many lies too many empty words were said Too many times for too many angry men Oh let it never be again His name was medgar evers and he walked his road alone Like emmett till and thousands more whose names well never know They tried to burn his home and they beat him to the ground But deep inside they both knew what it took to bring him down *chorus* The killer waited by his home hidden by the night As evers stepped out from his car into the rifle sight He slowly squeezed the trigger, the bullet left his side It struck the heart of every man when evers fell and died. *chorus* And they laid him in his grave while the bugle sounded clear Laid him in his grave when the victory was near While we waited for the future for freedom through the land (*) The country gained a killer and the country lost a man *chorus* /pre
PHIL OCHS - The Scorpion Departs But Never Returns (lyrics included, 1969)

My last upload on this short tribute to mighty Phil Ochs is ending with one of his absolute masterpieces. The 1968 disappearance of the USS Scorpion was the inspiration for 'The Scorpion Departs But Never Returns', filled with inegmatic symbolism, deep passions, and mixed with very cinematic descriptions, most of which express the imagined conditions and changing states of mind (apprehension, fear, denial, etc.) as the Scorpion crew realizes its rapidly declining fate. 'Scorpion', along with 'When in Rome' from Ochs's previous album is often cited as a masterpiece of Och's songwriting. Personnel: * Phil Ochs - guitar, vocals * Larry Marks - producer * Lincoln Mayorga - piano, accordion * Bob Rafkin - guitar, bass * Kevin Kelley - drums (rumored) * Ian Freebairn-Smith - arrangements Philip David Ochs (December 19, 1940 -- April 9, 1976) was an American protest singer (or, as he preferred, a topical singer) and songwriter who was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, earnest humanism, political activism, insightful and alliterative lyrics, and distinctive voice.
