The European Northern Viper - Odze - Vipera berus
Only venomous snake in Latvia is the Adder (Vipera berus). It has very distinctive zigzag pattern on its back and small sturdy forms that helps part it from two other snakes - grass snake and smooth snake. In spring adder uses every sunbeam to get warm and again be able to move and start eating as during winter sleep it loses a lot of calories. Venom in spring is much stronger than later in summer. It needs its venom to gain food not to attack people. The Adder is very shy reptile and tries to stay out of conflicts with other animals that could possibly have it for dinner. Among those are wild boar, badger, hedgehog, fox and racoon dog. Odze ir vienīgā indīgā čūsku suga Latvijā. Odzes kā pirmās no Latvijā sastopamajām čūskām pēc pārziemošanas var sastapt agri pavasarī, kad zeme vēl sasalusi. Šis ir odžu tēviņš. Tēviņi parasti krāsoti zilganpelēkos toņos, mātītes brūnganos, bet dažviet vairāk kā puse visu odžu ir melnas. Odze ir filoģenētiski jauna suga, tāpēc reizēm sastop visdažādāko nokrāsu odzes, piemēram, puse odzes gaiša, puse melna. Par savu klātbūtni odze brīdina skaļi šņācot. Nebūtu vēlams odzi īpaši kaitināt, jo tai spēki jātaupa riestam, kurš notiek pavasarī. Jāatceras, ka odze nebūt nealkst kost visiem, kas vien patrāpās ceļā, jo indes izstrādāšanai jātērē daudz enerģijas un paiet vairākas dienas, līdz indes krājumi atjaunojušies.
