Ikare Akoko! Ondo State South West Nigeria. My Home Town by Kayode Ogundamisi

Ikare-Akoko (Ikare for short), city in southwestern Nigeria, located in Ondo state. Ikare is about 100km from Akure, the Ondo State capital. The city was the divisional headquarters of the old Akoko Division, co...mprising of Oka-Akoko, Isua-Akoko, Okeagbe-Akoko etc. Based on the Local Government System now practised in Nigeria, the city is currently the headquarters of Akoko North-East Local Government. The city is a trading point for the production of cocoa in the surrounding area. The traditional ruler of Ikare is the Olukare of Ikare-Akoko and the Owa-Ale of Ikare-Akoko with several other chiefs administering the various Quaters. The Quaters in Ikare include Okoja, Iku, Ilepa, Odeyare, Odoruwa, Okeruwa, Okola, Okegbe, Iyame, Igbede, Oyinmo, etc. Ikare-Akoko is famous throughout West Africa for its decorative pottery. The city is located in the Yoruba cultural region and has a substantial Christian, Jehovah Witness and Muslim population with several Chruches, worshipping halls and mosques. The architectural style of the city incorporates both Portuguese and Arabic styles. The Portuguese style was introduced in the 1500s when Portugal began to export slaves from the region. Arabic influences were incorporated in the 19th century with the diffusion of Islamic culture southward across the Sahara. Population as of 1995 was 137300

Voice on the Street. "Fashola is for Big Man"?

The Lagos State Government is one out of the very few State governments in Nigeria that appear to be doing something positive in Nigeria, other States mentioned are Benue and to some extent Rivers. During my last trip home. I must mention that Lagos do appear cleaner, and I did notice some construction projects. However the downtrodden and poor in Lagos feel rightly or wrongly that the Government of Babatunde Raji Fasholas policy is anti poor. The governor should try and address the concerns. In the short clip I had brief chats with those whose face you will never see in the mainstream media. I am quite positive the governor will address the concerns of those the Nigerian elites refer to as wretched of the earth but are citizens with equal rights. Kayode Ogundamisi

ASA Live in London Indigo02

Thanks to cokobar ASA had her debut 02 performance in London. The Day Aṣha the Nigerian musical "Hawk" bewildered a London audience. Written by Kayode Ogundamisi Asa (pronounced "Asha") Bukola Elemide is a Nigerian -- French singer-songwriter and recording artist. Her stage name "Asa" means "Hawk" in Yoruba. Born in Paris, France to Nigerian parents ASA'S cross culture can be seen in her music but with her Yoruba background reflecting greatly in her music. Asa grew up in Lagos, in the south-western part of Nigeria later returned to her country of birth France. She is fast becoming the face of Nigeria. ASA had an 02 debut when she played in the 2500 capacity indigo02 centre. Just a week before ASA's performance another compatriot of ASA known as Sade Adu had performed at the main centre of the 02 almost filling up the 25000 capacity main bowl thus staging a come back after 18 years. Like ASA Sade Adu is caught between two cultures as a British-Nigerian. ASA may not have the stage presence of Sade Adu and probably has a long way to go to on the international stage but she is proving to be a gem and a talent with the potential of breaking through the difficult international terrain. Her music is fast gaining acceptance in major European cities and she is being managed by Asa Sony/BMG UK. ASA came on stage at exactly 12 minutes past 9, just a few minutes after her billed start time, a pleasant departure from the usual Nigerian artists who perform in the UK and sometimes start ...
