Members of the legendary Tuareg group, Tinariwen played a set with JeConte on harmonica at a fundraiser for the 'Essakane Film' in NYC. The film documents the production of the festival Tinariwen helped start 11 years ago, 'The Festival in the Desert.'

Manny Ansar, the director of Festival in the Desert (the annual music festival held in the Sahara Desert) tells Okayafrica about the logistical difficulties of putting on the festival and why it's well worth the effort.

Okayafrica interviews the filmmakers of 'Punk In Africa' Keith Jones and Jeffrey Brown. They tell us about the development of punk music in Southern Africa during the early years, as well as its political and cultural relevance.

In 2008 Focus Features launched Africa First, a program geared toward building independent filmmaking in Africa. Each year Africa First grants $10000 to emerging filmmakers from across the continent to make a short film. As part of the program, the participants are flown to New York City where they are paired up with an established industry professional to develop their scripts. Program Director Kisha Cameron-Dingle invited Okayafrica to join the filmmakers and advisory board on a private tour of the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York.
