The King's Will - Love, Against Homophobia ("As The Power Fails", #7 of 9)

Directed by Jae Hwang: cargocollective.com thekingswill.com To some people My love is somewhat alien; When he comes up, they start subject-changing, and In some states he's seen as some contagion - In those zones, he stays subterranean; Some love my love; they run parades for him: Liberal citizens lead the way for him: But the same time as these people are embracing him, Whole faiths and nations seem ashamed of him: They've tried banning him, God-damning him, Toe-tagging him, Praying that he stayed in the cabinet, But my love kicked in the panelling, and ran for it - He's my love! Can't be trapping him in labyrinths! - Maverick, my love is; he thwarts challenges; The cleverest geneticists can't fathom him, Priests can't defeat him with venomous rhetoric; They'd better quit; my love's too competitive: He's still here, despite the Taliban, Vatican, And rap, ragga in their anger and arrogance, Who call on my love with lit matches and paraffin - Despite the fistfights and midnight batterings - My love's still here and fiercely battling, Because my love comes through anything My love comes through anything My love comes through anything My love comes through anything

LV & Musa Okwonga feat. Curtis Mayfield - "The Flight"

"The Flight" My eyes open slowly - As I lie there, I see by my bedside each friend who knows me closely; So it's come to this. I'm aged halfway to eighty, And through each year my heart's loved bravely, therefore unsafely; I've 'faced fate down, led it a graceful dance, As it's chased me, I've raced it hard, outpaced it till the last - Till I'm aching, Till the pain's invaded so many places, I've had to stop accelerating. I used to be so arrogant; I thought I'd win life's marathon, But apparently there are no prizes for pride, or ribbons for diligence; In the end, there's just the end, which I naively didn't see; I thought I'd easily persevere, I thought they'd never send the hearse through here; You see, I've experienced so much, I've paid so many dues, That I thought this was a game I'd never lose; I started thinking I was immortal But the second I thought that, God chortled. They say God laughs when we make plans: He's watched me trace my path away from war-scarred foreign lands, Where AIDS cases and unmarked graves are common as grains of desert sand, Where solemn bargains for slaves are made each day by neighbouring clans; Where I grew up. Soon as I left the womb, I was running; There was always something to escape, be it Ebola Or just that drunkard driving that Range Rover, Racing over potholes, ten shots from being sober... That was me; ever escaping, Hoping, praying and close-shaving, Evading nature's worst and Mankind at its most perverse; No helping hand to ...

First Wednesday: KONY 2012 - A force for good?

04/04/12 The recent KONY 2012 campaign video has been met with strong criticism, but nobody can question its effectiveness in reaching a mass audience. The film, created by Invisible Children and featuring director and founder of Invisible Children Jason Russell, is reportedly one of the fastest spreading viral videos ever, reaching over 100 million views in a week. It has been criticised for presenting a complex situation as a simplified problem with a simple solution, for reinforcing the idea that Africans are helpless victims who need to be 'saved' by 'the West' and for misrepresenting reality. Despite its inaccuracies this campaign has created wider awareness about Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) than any news report or campaign that has come before it, so what can be learned? Join us for April's First Wednesday as we debate whether the KONY 2012 campaign is a force for good or a worrying development in campaigning. Hosted by Paddy O'Connell of BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House. With: Benjamin Chesterton, radio documentary and photofilm producer, co-founder of the production company duckrabbit and the website A Developing Story. Amanda Weisbaum, Programmes Director at War Child, who work on the ground with communities affected by the LRA in Northern Uganda and Central African Republic. Musa Okwonga, a football writer, poet and musician of Ugandan descent. He is author of A Cultured Left Foot which was nominated for the William Hill Sports Book of the ...

The King's Will - Propaganda, for Edward Bernays ('As The Power Fails', #1 of 9)

thekingswill.com - animated by Tom Bunker Lyrics: Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! Friends, pick your pens up, pick your pads up - This is a lesson in - Propaganda! If you have a question On a stanza Wait till the end then Pop a hand up! To make your propaganda Spread like the symptoms of a cancer You must make it catchy, package it In adages, yes, in the form of a mantra: Just Do It, Just Do It, Just - Repeat, repeat, ad infinitum - Repeat, repeat, ad infinitum- Repeat, repeat, ad infinitum - Repeat, repeat, ad Infinitum - Rigid, ribbit, ridiculous! Next point in curriculum Next rule of propaganda: To distract us, soften language: To distract us, soften language: Let's say you've smashed a whole parish: That's called "collateral damage": And if you hate homosexuals, You're... Pro-family! Pro-family! Pro-family! Pro-family! Propaganda, propaganda: Truth needs light so we switch off the lantern: Propaganda: don't offer candour Dress up dross, till it's jolly handsome: Oh yes, the greatest skill of all To turn harsh thoughts to harmless syllables! Propaganda, propaganda It's not brainwashing, just branding! Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! Marketing! This is a lesson in - Propaganda!

Don't let your positions fall for nothing; The swords are coming; So guard your halls, warn your beloveds; And stand your ground, Maintain terrain, Only chickens change their lanes! Though this is a slog against all odds: You must fight Fate with faith! Stay diligent, brave citizens, Engage this gravest predicament! Your will is the difference, But the swords will test you, rest assured!... So bless you all: Now venture forth, Defend your forts! Yes, they are belligerent, But you are magnificent! [CHORUS: The Siren] The Fool, verse 2: My dukes and duchesses, Take up your cutlasses!... Verily, we've never seen devilry such as this, And it must desist, We must resist these Tides of such murderous Turbulence, Malevolent purposes Encircle us, Still, our will is permanent - We stay untamed, irreverent! Though we're at the precipice We will never slip, No, we'll never falter! Their swords may assault us But we will never be brought to their altar! Indeed, the swords are coming, Sinister forces walk among us; The abyss waits gaping - Now we - Make proof of our greatness!

From its few clues, I can soon deduce Who you were, how much further in your pursuit That I have to go, for it's natural That a son plays catch-up, that's his role; Yes, that's his role... ...So; Dad, you came from Uganda Born in its Northeast in early Forties... It's clear from the cluster of stamps in here You loved Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania - Loved travelling, Dressed sharp as a javelin; Handwriting, sleek...yes, I see comparisons; Even your jackets I wear as well, Those Seventies classics that they rarely sell - And look! I outgrew you, I six-foot-twoed you, Touché, you lose, at six-foot-one; And as for professions, we've different ones... Didn't mimic you as a medic - I loathe blood - But I've opened more wounds than you ever closed up, Sewed up, since we poets, we bare souls More urgently than you surgeons repair souls... ...It says here you were born five days from Christmas; I used to own your leather-bound book of Scriptures But to my mother, that's now been restored For my rapport with the Lord isn't warm as yours, Isn't warm as yours... ...Speaking of Mother, given you're her husband You'd think she'd mention you loads, but she doesn't; I guess she's still upset that you went to war But when she talks of you, there's an impressive warmth: "He's the best man, you can rest assured; Didn't think that the fist was the best resort; Only thing, I confess, that I'm left to mourn's That he walked ...

KONY 2012 video link: www.youtube.com LAtimes article: latimesblogs.latimes.com KONY 2012 website: kony2012.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com My channel:www.youtube.com A video gaining international attention is trying to use the power of the Internet to stop Joseph Kony, the head of a small but infamous militia that has terrorized northern Uganda with killings, kidnappings, mutilations and torture. The unusual and controversial new campaign spotlights the horrors inflicted by the Lord's Resistance Army, a militia that for years has been notorious for abducting children to fight as soldiers and suffer as sex slaves, as well as for mutilating its victims. But the campaign has also spurred a debate about whether the nonprofit behind the effort and its empowering tools of social media -- Twitter, YouTube and Facebook -- are dangerously oversimplifying the dilemma. The video campaign was launched this week by Invisible Children Inc., a San Diego-based nonprofit that produced a half-hour documentary that aims to ramp up international pressure to arrest Kony. The militia leader is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes. Kony has been pursued by the United States, which launched a military mission in Uganda last year to stop him and other Lord's Resistance Army leaders. US officials said the brutal militia had pushed at least 400000 people out of their homes. Yet Kony has so far remained on the loose. The campaign argues that Kony must be ...

The King's Will - Self-Improvement ("As The Power Fails", #9 of 9)

thekingswill.com - animated by Jessica Davies Lyrics: Self-Improvement. It's me who chooses how much better I should do: Eg, in the small matter of cleaning my room. Speaking of which, So much for self-improvement: It was my New Year's Resolution To clean my room, And now it's December, And my desk is messy as ever. Looking from left to right, Its contents reveal a mind not focused, But aimless: A pack of silica gel from new trainers; Unfiled invoices, Unlearned poems, Passports old and new, Two pairs of cufflinks (One with a box, one without), Cups and glasses kidnapped from the kitchen And many pennies of change, Each one of which came from a wasted pound. Looking at the desk, the signs aren't hard to decipher; There isn't an inch of empty space, Though you're meant to be a writer. This isn't the room of a man with a masterplan. This is the room of a man who's doing it all Just because he can. Self-Improvement. First there's the marketing - And then there's me. First there's the: Proud poet prolifically pulling off Particularly multisyllabic rhymes with polish and authority - And then there's the older brother who is slightly too sarcastic Who is thirty - thirty! - and still has issues with his accent. Self-improvement. Change Things. Change your default answer from No, to Yes. Eg In future, when having an intense inner dialogue with your stubborn self, Respond initially in the affirmative and not the negative to the following commands: (A) Try this, it might work.
