Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

The bay area is home to some fine breweries, but San Francisco is home to a brewery for the pass 100 years or so. Anchor Brewery is known for their Liberty Ale, but also has a great selection of other beers. Old Fog Horn, named after the horns in the bay, basically heard every day. A barley wine, with a conflicting taste for us. Thanks for watching Yet Another Beer show.

This is really a mini-review of the beer, as I worked for awhile trying to get everything perfect and it just kept going wrong. I kind of like the result, though, so I may end up doing more of these smaller reviews so that I can get more content out faster.

This week we drink Shift from New Belgium, a pale lager that has historically been a brewery employee only after "Shift" beverage. John wants to go New Belgium and build stuff, Matt's a liar, and Stephen is likely gonna get stabbed by Dr. Bill, and if you're playing a drinking game, don't use the word lager, or you'll die. Also we want you to go to the site and buy merch! www.newbrewthursday.com On Master Pairings, Matt is back with Bill, to do an epic pairing with the first Barleywine ever produced commercially in the US, Old Foghorn, and Peanut Butter and Jelly! Also Bill gives you a lesson in Barleywine production. After Master Pairings, we talk about how environmentally friendly New Belgium is and discuss their sustainability, and encourage people to commute in a more environmentally friendly way! Stephen walks to work. ;) __ Support our Sponsors Beachwood BBQ - www.beachwoodbbq.com The Full Pint - http Untappd - www.untappd.com __ Follow us online New Brew Thursday -- Twitter -- twitter.com New Brew Thursday -- Facebook -- facebook.com/newbrewthursday Master Pairings -- Twitter -- twitter.com/masterpairings Master Pairings -- Facebook -- facebook.com/masterpairings Stephen -- twitter.com/darthweef John -- twitter.com/johnholzer Matt -- twitter.com/SmallBatchBrew

Recorded on March 19, 2012 with the best interests of the public and our brewer nation at heart. Made from the second runnings of our Old Foghorn® mash, Anchor Small® revives the ancient brewing tradition of creating two distinct beers from one mash -- a sweeter, stronger and more expensive barleywine made for sipping, and a more plentiful drinking beer. We sprinkle warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first "wort" has run off, creating a second, lighter brew. Technically, both beers are "ales" because they are made with top-fermenting yeast. Like its forebears, the result is an easy-drinking "session" beer.

Been some years ago Since I left from my island To go to the mainland, Like the old folks would say; As I walked up the gangway And I stood on the starboard And I gazed on the harbour On a grey foggy day. Summer days they were warmer then When we laughed with the old fishermen, And they cursed when the fog rolled in, Then they made up the hay; It's been more than a long, long time Since I held you and called you mine, And we waited for the sun to shine On a grey foggy day. To wake in the early morn To the sound of the old fog horn, And wait for the men to return With their boats in the bay; All these things I don't see no more When I lived on the old cape shore, And I gazed on the boats on the moors On a grey foggy day. Summer days they were warmer then When we laughed with the old fishermen, And they cursed when the fog rolled in, Then they made up the hay; It's been more than a long, long time Since I held you and called you mine, And we waited for the sun to shine On a grey foggy day. And as long as my heart, Doesn't break from those old memories, Old lovers and old use-to-bes, I'll come home for to stay; I can still hear the ocean roar Through the hills on the old cape shore, There are no fishing boats anymore, But it's a grey foggy, foggy day. Summer days they were warmer then When we laughed with the old fishermen, And they cursed when the fog rolled in, Then they made up the hay; It's been more than a long, long time Since I held you and called you mine, And we ...

Popular Newfoundland song, recorded by Eddie Coffey and by Shanneyganock. I'm playing it in the key of C on my B/C accordion, but the fingering would be exactly the same on a G/C. The bass for this song is a bit more complex than what I do for, say, I's The B'y or Cock O' The North, but for this song I find that if you don't get the bass just right, it ends up sounding funny. Lyrics: It's been some years ago Since I left from my island To go to the mainland Like the old folks would say As I walked up the gangway And stood on the starboard And gazed at the harbour On a grey foggy day Chorus: Summer days they were warmer then When we laughed with the old fisherman And they cursed when the fog rolled in Then they made up the hay It's been more than a long, long time Since I held you and called you mine And we waited for the sun to shine On a grey foggy day To wake in the early morn To the sound of the old fog horn And wait for the men to return With their boats in the bay All these things I don't see no more When I lived on the old cape shore And I gazed at the boats on their moor On a grey foggy day (Chorus) As long as my heart don't break From those old memories Old lovers and old used-to-be's I'll come home to stay. I can still hear the ocean roar Through the hills on the old cape shore But there's no fishin' boats anymore But it's a grey foggy day. (Chorus)

www.peoplestandup.ca Lemuel Moreau Light Keeper Western Head Lighthouse keeper and Medway Head. Celebrating his Birthday on Saturday November 15, 2008 he will be 84 years old. This is a tribute to the many things he saw during his years as a lighthouse keeper. The Last Great Lighthouse Keeper of the South Shore. The Writer (Chris Mills) met Western Head Lighthouse keeper Lemuel Moreau And he took us to into the big, rambling foghorn building, Lemuel had the whole place painted up room the white ceilings, to the high-gloss, Battleships gray floors. He explained hoe he reported the weather, and logged the Coast Guard helicopters trips to his lighthouse for fuel. Everything was immaculate and in its place - even the wrenches had hooks And little outlines drawn on the wall so you'd know where they belonged. On that day, Lemuel symbolized for me pride and attention to detail that marked His profession, even after most of his duties had been taken away by Automated equipment. By 1988, even though Lemuel was still on the station, the whole kit and kaboodle was monitored from afar. If he wanted to get into the tower, he had to call the keepers at Cape Forchu to disable the intrusion alarm. He didn't even have to climb the lighthouse tower to clean the lantern windows or squeeze a little oil into the lights rotating mechanism. Lemuel told me at the time, "I don't know what its working like now. I haven't been up there." and he trailed off, trying to remember just when he had been ...
