De Afrikaanse olifant is super populair bij toeristen op safari. Het dier behoort tot de zogenaamde Big 5 en is een must see voor velen. Maar hoe populair de olifant ook is, lokalen en wildgidsen zijn minder dol op de dieren. Ze kunnen extreem agressief zijn en zelfs mensen doden. Als je een olifant besluipt moet je dan ook goed oppassen...

Dat de natuur beschermd moet worden weten we allemaal. Beschermd door de mens...............voor de mens...........tegen de mens De olifanten (Elephantidae) vormen een familie uit de orde der slurfdieren (Proboscidea), waartoe de grootste hedendaagse landzoogdieren behoren. Grotere landzoogdieren (zoals het Indricotherium) hebben bestaan, maar zijn uitgestorven. Het woord olifant komt van het Italiaanse elefanti, dat weer uit het Arabisch werd overgenomen van El-Hanti. De Arabieren namen het woord over van de Indiërs. Het Hindi woord hanti komt van het Sanskriet hantis (hij heeft grote handen ofwel voeten): olifant. Olifanten onderscheiden zich van andere dieren doordat ze een lange slurf bezitten, die zij als grijporgaan gebruiken, bijvoorbeeld om voedsel op te pakken en zich met water en zand te bestrooien. Een mannetje wordt stier of bul genoemd, een vrouwtje heet koe en een jong heet kalf. Olifanten leven in matriarchale groepen, bestaande uit enkele volwassen koeien met hun kalveren. Volwassen bullen leven voornamelijk solitair en voegen zich alleen bij de groep om met geslachtsrijpe koeien te paren. Tijdens de paartijd raakt een bul, door hormonale veranderingen, zodanig opgewonden dat hij onberekenbaar en daardoor zeer gevaarlijk wordt. Volwassen olifanten bereiken vaak een gewicht van 3 tot 5 ton bij een schofthoogte van ongeveer 3 meter. -Alkmaar- Na het onverwachte verlies van vorige week dat een zeer harde schok veroorzaakte die tot diep in Nieuw-Zeeland te voelen was, hebben de mannen van Heren 2 eindelijk weer eens kunnen winnen. Onder leiding van de teruggekeerde Jokertje en van de Neanderthaler die zijn zoektocht naar de felbegeerde beker aan de andere kant van de aardkloot succesvol had voltooid (uitgebreid verslag volgt nog) werd het tegen Bevok 2 een gemakkelijke 4-0. Heren 2 was sinds lange tijd eindelijk weer zo goed als compleet. Alleen Snotneus was afwezig vanwege zijn snotneus en Fluppie was gevangen genomen door een stelletje kinderen. Daardoor kon er begonnen worden met Jokertje en de Olifant op het midden, Beentjes op de diagonaal, de Krantenman en Visser op de buitenkant en de Neanderthaler op de spelverdelerspositie. De start was uiterst belabberd. Pas bij een 0-3 achterstand kon het eerste punt bij de Alkmaarders bijgeschreven worden, maar dat moment bleek wel direct de ommekeer. Jokertje moest duidelijk weer even wennen aan het vertrouwde ronde object en calculeerde meermaals zijn eigen spierkracht verkeerd in. De eerste fout werd nog op ingenieuze wijze verholpen door de Neanderthaler zelf, die een te harde bovenhandse servicepass van eerstgenoemde op telepathische wijze rechtstreeks over het net dacht met een scorend punt als gevolg. Wolves attack Red Deer
Roofvogels cirkelen onheilspellend boven een enorme kudde edelherten. Een zwarte schim door het stille bos blijft niet onopgemerkt. Wolven! Schijnbaar speels bewegen de stille zwarte schimmen door het bos. Roofvogels als uilen en arenden slaan alarm. De kudde edelherten wordt onrustig. Strategisch nemen de wolven hun plek in en maken hun keus. Nerveus drommen de herten samen. Het net sluit als de wolven 1 voor 1 uit het bos naar beneden komen. Wanneer de wolven beginnen te rennen slaat de kudde hindes in paniek op hol, achtervolgd door de hongerige roedel wolven. Het onvermijdelijke gebeurt. Voldaan trekken de wolven zich weer terug in hun holen, verstopt tussen de rotsen in het donkere bos.
