St. Crispin's Day Speech - Henry V (1944)

Laurence Olivier's 1944 version of Henry V Here's the speech, I'm pretty sure it's word for word and the film version: What's he that wishes so? My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin: If we are mark'd to die, we are enow To do our country loss; and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honour. God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart; his passport shall be made And crowns for convoy put into his purse: We would not die in that man's company That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is called the feast of Crispian: He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:' Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars. And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.' Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages What feats he did that day: then shall our names. Familiar in his mouth as household words Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester, Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember'd; We few, we happy ...

Shakespeare's Henry V Act IV, Scene III by Lawrence Olivier

Crispian's Day speech after that is several minutes of the battle scenes at Agincourt. Not the most accurate battle scenes, of course, but the importance of the famed English longbow to the eventual victory is given proper emphasis. Fine music by William Walton. Laurence Olivier ... King Henry V Gerald Case ... Earl of Westmoreland Griffith Jones ... Earl of Salisbury Ralph Truman ... Mountjoy From the film "The Chronicle History of King Henry the Fift with His Battell Fought at Agincourt in France" (1944) directed by Lord Olivier James Agee on Olivier's "Henry V": ...Olivier does many other beautiful pieces of reading and playing. His blood-raising reply to the French Herald's ultimatum is not just that; it is a frank, bright exploitation of the moment for English ears, amusedly and desperately honored as such, in a still gallant and friendly way, by both Herald and King. His Crispin's Day oration is not just a brilliant bugle-blat; it is the calculated yet self-exceeding improvisation, at once self-enjoying and selfless, of a young and sleepless leader, rising to a situtation wholly dangerous and glamorous, and wholly new to him. Only one of the many beauties of the speech as he gives it is the way in which the King seems now to exploit his sincerity, no to be possessed by it, riding like an unexpectedly mounting wave the astounding size of his sudden proud awareness of the country morning, of his moment in history, of his responsibilty and competence, of being full ...

Othello Maggie Smith ... Desdemona Joyce Redman ... Emilia Frank Finlay ... Iago Michael Turner ... Gratiano Edward Hardwicke ... Montano Directed by Stuart Burge and John Dexter from John W. Hales, "Notes and Essays on Shakespeare" (London, 1884): For the most part Shakespeare delights in tracing the action of the great moral laws of the world, and showing how fearful is the penalty of transgression. But sometime he exhibits a yet more dreadful spectacle,--a spectacle mysterious, inscrutable, soul-prostrating. It is Fate, blind, inexorable, rapacious. Desdemona is one of Fate's choicest victims. Her 'graces serve' her 'but as enemies'. Her very virtues bring on her ruin. What is most innocent is construed into evidence against her. In obeying the best instincts of her clear spirit she excites the evilest suspicions and secures the bitterest condemnation. The truth from her lips is turned into a lie. In the present passage, her answers, by an almost incredible infelicity, are, through the very purity of her nature, just such as to confirm Othello's detestable impeachment. Could replies be more unfortunate? She lies in the toils of Fate, and there is no escape for her. We may go further than her name in Greek, desdaimon, 'ill-starred', and say it is ...

Olivier Latry at the organ at the Cathedral of Notre Dame

Olivier Latry is one of three organists at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. He is one of the finest concert organists in the world today. On October 7, 2007 Mr. Latry invited JAV Recordings into the loft at Notre Dame and allowed us to film him playing the Introit to the 11:30 Sunday Mass. This music was spontaneously created by Mr. Latry in the tradition of the great French organists. This was recorded with a Cannon HV20 and a pair of microphone hung in the Nave of the Cathedral. On October 14, 2007 Mr. Latry recorded Vierne's 6th Symphony and a 3 movement symphony on hymn tunes at Washington National Cathedral. Messiaen: Turangalila-Symphonie Mvt. 1

Olivier Messiaen: Turangalila-Symphonie (1948) Mvt. 1 Orchestre de lOpera Bastille, dir. Myung-Whun chung, soloists: Yvonne Loriod - piano, Jeanne Loriod Ondes Martenot Messiaen wrote the following words about this recording of Turangalila-Symphonie: After hearing around two hundred performances of this work, some small changes have been suggested to me. The magnificent version of Turangalila-Symphonie that has now been achieved by Myung-Whun Chung takes account of these modifications, and answers perfectly to all my desires. These are the correct tempos, the correct dynamics, the right feelings and the right joy! Coming after the many excellent interpretations that we already know, this new version, superb from every point of view, can be considered henceforth the definitive account.

There was some doubt about whether Olivier would have the stamina to complete the interview, but as the producer retold it, gradually, prodded by Ed's questions, the frail old man who had tottered into the room became Laurence Olivier, the actor. The interview went on for another hour and a half as Laurence Olivier and Ed jousted with each other. When Jeanne finally said cut; neither had fallen off his horse, and we wrapped one of the more memorable 60 Minutes interviews.

Olivier Messiaen: Le Traquet rieur (1956-58)

One of the last pieces in Messiaen's massive, seven-volume cycle for piano, Catalogue d'oiseaux. This piece features the black wheatear (traquet rieur). In Messiaen's own words: "Mois de Mai. Yvonne Loriod, piano.
