How To Open a Wine Bottle Without a Corkscrew

Don't panic—we're going to help you get into that sucker. To complete this How-To you will need: A screw Pliers or a hammer Screwdriver A pocket or paring knife A towel Step 1: Screw it Stick a screw into the cork. Step 2: Turn it With either your hands or a screwdriver, screw it into the cork until there's only about half an inch sticking out. Step 3: Pull it With pliers or the back of a hammer, grab the top of the screw and carefully pull it—and the cork—out of the bottle. Tip: If you have none of these items, work a pocket or paring knife into the cork instead. Using the same principle, twist it and pull up, slowly working the blade—and cork—out. Step 4: Wrap the base If you have nothing other than your bare hands—you're on a desert island with nothing but a good bottle of cabernet (hey, it could happen!)—take some material, like a towel or a piece of clothing, and wrap the base of the bottle. To complete this How-To you will need: A cold bottle of champagne A towel A bucket of ice water Salt (table or rock) Step 1: Make sure bottle is chilled Champagne is best opened when very cold, so make sure you're working with a well-chilled bottle. 43 to 48 degrees is ideal. Tip: Put the bottle in a champagne bucket full of ice. To speed up the chilling process, add cold water and a little salt. Step 2: Dry bottle & point cork Dry off the bottle so you can get a good grip, and point the cork away from people. Step 3: Peel foil wrapper Peel off the foil wrapper, keeping the wire cage intact. Step 4: Grip bottle Loosely grip the bottle's neck, placing your thumb on top of the cork. How to open a wine bottle - Opening a bottle of wine The corkscrew: Ray demonstrates opening a bottle of wine with a traditional waiter's corkscrew, which has three main parts: * a blade (often serrated) * a bottle opener/lever * a screw Opening the bottle: 1. Use the knife end to cut around the base of the capsule (the metal part) and pop off the metal cap of the wine bottle. 2.
