Battle of New Orleans, In 1814

Fun pictures to accompany Johnny Horton's song. I do not own rights to the song or images. BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS (Written by Jimmy Driftwood) Johnny Horton In 1814, we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip'. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans. We fired our guns and the British kept a-coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more, and they began to running, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. We looked down the river and we see'd the British come and there musta' been a hundred of 'em beating on the drum. They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring We stood beside our cotton bales and didn't say a thing. We fired our guns, and the British kept a-coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to running, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Ole Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise If we didn't fire our muskets 'till we look 'em in the eyes. We held our fire 'til we seen their faces swell Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave 'em... Well.. We fired our guns, and the British kept a-coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to running, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Well they ran through the briars, and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit ...

New Orleans is the center of the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area, the largest metro area in the state. New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana, straddling the Mississippi River. It is coextensive with Orleans Parish, meaning that the boundaries of the city and the parish are the same. It is bounded by the parishes of St. Tammany (north), St. Bernard (east), Plaquemines (south), and Jefferson (south and west). Hurricane Katrina: The Drive: New Orleans Lower 9th Ward

A painful irony of post-Katrina New Orleans is how few people throughout the country understand the extent of what has happened to the city. Many people do not realize that, nearly 10 months later, things are not back to normal in New Orleans. As America's attention fades from Hurricane Katrina's impact, a disabled New Orleans continues to struggle for survival. In many respects, New Orleans is alive and kicking. People are moving home, schools are opening, cultural activities have returned and, in some neighborhoods, life has a sense of near normalcy; however, all it takes is a short drive outside of the French Quarter or Uptown to witness extensive loss and devastation. The magnitude of flooding was incomprehensible and New Orleans still has many challenges to overcome. The only way to really get a sense of the magnitude of the post-Katrina destruction is to physically walk or drive through the affected areas. With this in mind, NOVAC presents The Drive. The Drive provides a raw visual and narrated tour through four of the most devastated neighborhoods in New Orleans and is supported with extensive footage, maps, interviews, digital imagery, and an original musical score by Emmy nominated composer, Gil Talmi. Through this community-based documentary project, we present stories from a local point-of-view. We hope this effort will garner continued support for the rebuilding of a great American city.

NOAH-NEW ORLEANS ARCOLOGY HABITAT

Tangram 3DS brings Floating City to Life Tangram 3DS, a firm specializing in visualization and computer animation, announced its collaboration with E. Kevin Schopfer AIA, RIBA. Together, the companies have designed and presented a bold new urban platform. New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH) is a proposed urban Arcology (architecture and ecology), whose philosophic underpinnings rest in combining large scale sustainability with concentrated urban structures, and in this case a floating city. Tangram 3DS worked with Schopfer to visualize this unique concept and structure. Starting from basic sketches, Tangram 3DS transformed Schopfers ideas into visuals and an animation. Our work helps Kevin convey his concept to the City of New Orleans, investors, the media, and public, said Stefan Vittori, president and founder of Tangram 3DS, LLC. To be able to visualize a design project in 3D and through animation is absolutely vital when attempting to sell a design concept that may at first glance be hard to grasp, adds Vittori. Why a floating city? There are three major challenges to building in New Orleans. The first challenge is to overcome both the physical and psychological damages of recurring severe weather patterns. Though repopulation has begun, the need to provide a stabilized and safe environment is paramount to a long-term recovery and economic well being of New Orleans. The second challenge is that New Orleans has been built at and below sea levels, which creates a ...

FREE SPEECH FIGHT: New Orleans Bureaucrats Silence Speech, Tour Guides Fight Back

www.ij.org In New Orleans, it is a crime to charge people for a talking tour without first getting permission from the government. City officials require every tour guide to pass a history exam, undergo a drug test and an FBI criminal background check every two years merely for speaking. People who give tours without a license face fines up to $300 per occurrence and five months in jail. The First Amendment does not allow the government to be in the business of deciding who is—and who is not—allowed to speak about various topics. That is why four New Orleans tour guides have joined with the Institute for Justice in a federal lawsuit seeking to secure their free speech rights. Vindicating this principle will help protect the rights of countless people across the country that speak for a living—whether they speak as news reporters, stand-up comedians or tour guides. This lawsuit was filed on December 13, 2011, in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Stella Shout Out New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival 2009

Each spring for 23 years, Tennessee Williams afficiendos have been converging upon New Orleans for a week of theater, literature, history, panels and seminars, all centering on the writer most closely associated with New Orleans. But for the past 12 years the grand finale of the festival has been the Stella Shout Out contest. The Stella Shout Out puts contestants in the role of Stanley Kowalski famously played by Marlon Brando in Tennessee William's classic play and celebrated film, "A Streetcar Named Desire." The climatic scene in the story takes place on a French Quarter street in New Orleans as Stanley yells hopelessly for Stella to take him back despite in mistakes. Contestants are allowed to bellow three "Stellas" and the results can be dramatic or hysterical. The Stella Shout Out has become one of the most anticipated events in New Orleans each spring and this year was no exception. A crowd of several hundred gathered to watch the Stanleys crying out to their Stellas on the cobblestone street below the balcony of the Pantalba apartments, the oldest and still one of the most prestigious apartment buildings in the country. This video includes appearances by: Ellen Johnson, New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival, Media Communications Director Matt Payne, winner, Stella Shout Out, 2009 New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival Charles Pumilla, contestant, Stella Shout Out, 2009 New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival Keith Marszalek, contestant, Stella Shout Out, 2009 ...

RIN TIN RIN: THE LIFE AND THE LEGEND by Susan Orlean

"He believed the dog was immortal." So begins Susan Orlean's sweeping, powerfully moving story of Rin Tin Tin's journey from orphaned puppy to movie star and international icon. From the moment in 1918 when Corporal Lee Duncan discovers Rin Tin Tin on a World War I battlefield, he recognizes something in the pup that he needs to share with the world. Rin Tin Tin's improbable introduction to Hollywood leads to the dog's first blockbuster film and over time, the many radio programs, movies, and television shows that follow. The canine hero's legacy is cemented by Duncan and a small group of others who devote their lives to keeping him and his descendants alive. At its heart, Rin Tin Tin is a poignant exploration of the enduring bond between humans and animals. But it is also a richly textured history of twentieth-century entertainment and entrepreneurship and the changing role of dogs in the American family and society. Almost ten years in the making, Susan Orlean's first original book since The Orchid Thief is a tour de force of history, human interest, and masterful storytelling—the ultimate must-read for anyone who loves great dogs or great yarns. For example: Did you know that at the first-ever Academy Awards, Rin Tin Tin earned most votes for Best Actor? (In response, the Academy re-tallied its results and awarded the most popular human instead.) Or that the name of the first dog in a feature film was "Rover," which singlehandedly explains why a hundred years later ...
