Remember the pre-cable days huddled around the old black and white TV, fidgeting with the antenna to get WSBK TV38 to come in to see the Bruins? And who can forget doing a jig to the opening tune by the Ventures ("Nutty")! These clips are a little "grainy" and seen best when viewed in the smaller screen but they are a reminder of the days of watching the Bruins before NESN. And, of course, the best Bruin of them all (and greatest all around player ever!) wore Number Four - Bobby Orr!!

Never before accomplished, nor ever duplicated except by Bobby Orr: 1) Eight Norris Trophies (consecutive) Except for his rookie year, Orr won this trophy every year he was relatively healthy. 2) Art Ross Trophy as a Defenseman Bobby Orr remains the only defenseman ever to accomplish this feat, and he did it twice, as well as three runner ups and a third place finish (when he missed 20 games). 3) Multiple Hart Trophies as a Defenseman Orr was the first defenseman to win this during the Norris trophy era, and did it three times. He remains the only multiple winner of the Hart trophy as a defenseman. (Chris Pronger is the only other defenseman to break into this camp, albeit only once). 4) Percentage over Peers by Positional Grouping in Scoring Orr topped the charts over his defensive peers at a far greater rate than any other positional player ever. In 69-70 he was 176% over the next d-man, 123% in 70-71, 88% in 72-73, 81% in 74-75. BOBBY ORR'S 1970 STANLEY CUP WINNING GOAL
The Boston Bruins swept the St. Louis Blues in the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals. The fourth game went into overtime setting the stage for Orr's signature goal. Included is Orr's remembrance of the goal from 2004. Also Noel Picard, the defenseman he stepped around, remembers the goal and recalls Orr's later assistance to his daughter. 40th Anniversary!!

Notice Don Cherry's definition of a hockey player at the beginning of the clip -- one more reason why Bobby Orr is the best all around hockey player of all time. Bobby Orr was a very physical hockey player. He had over 100 penalty minutes a season several times, never backing down from a challenge, and often tearing into opponents after they attacked a team mate. He was a ferocious fighter once the decision to fight had been made. He was strong as an ox, and was known for having a good old Irish temper once things heated up.

There's no limit to what Bobby Orr can do on ice. His teammates and fans of the Boston Bruins know it, opposing players are made aware of it nightly and his coach Harry Sinden understands it completely. In this 1970 CBC-TV clip, Sinden heaps praise on his young superstar's dexterity as well as his shooting and passing ability. But it's Orr's skating prowess that the coach holds in the highest esteem. "I've seen him leave the finest skaters in the league behind even while carrying the puck," Sinden says. Teammate Gerry Cheevers notes Orr's all-round game. "He can show up some nights and play the greatest defensive game that you'll ever want to see and he can combine it with offensive play too," says Cheevers.

The greatest and best hockey player of yesterday, today, and all-time -- Number 4, Bobby Orr. This video was made in honor of Bobby's 60th (gulp) Birthday. Bobby Orr was the ultimate all-around player - he dominated all aspects of the game. He's the only Defenseman to have won the scoring title (twice) and holds the season record for +/- in a season (+124!!). Who knows how many records he could have broken if he didn't have to take the skates off in his prime... These clips are viewed best when watching them on a small screen, although the grainy quality is a reminder to those of us who used to watch the games in the pre-cable/satellite days -- back when reception was dependent on the rain, wind, and your skill with a hand held antenna!
