'Judaism Yes, Zionism No': Ultra-Orthodox Jews march against Israel

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East still shows little sign of a peaceful resolution. But in New York, there's a group of ultra orthodox Jews, who are devoted to the Palestinian struggle. And as Marina Portnaya discovered, they believe an end to the State of Israel is the only solution. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Orthodox Jews Under Fire for Altercation With 8 yr. Old Girl

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY JIM FLINK Heroes? Or fanatics? In Israel, a culture war is being waged between Ultra-Orthodox Jews -- called the Haredim -- and more moderate elements of society. euronews reports on the show-down that began when an 8-year-old school girl -- was allegedly spat upon by Orthodox men. "The town of Beit Shamesh near Jerusalem is under the spotlight after an 8-year-old girl complained of being threatened by ultra-Orthodox men for her dress. The graffiti says Israeli women, the Torah demands that you dress modestly." Two popular Israeli television stations deployed reporters to cover the little girl's walk to school, which raised anger across Israel. "We'll just walk a little bit. Naam. You wanna walk just a little bit?" "No (crying.)" "What's the problem. There are rabbi's and the(y) give us the power to know how to appear when we walk in the streets, and to know how a woman should behave when walking in the streets. And that's the way it should be." While the Haredim make up about half of the small town of Beit Shemesh, ultra-Orthodox Jews in general are a distinct minority in Israel. The Telegraph explains -- still -- they wield considerable influence. "Though numbering only 10 per cent of Israel's mostly Jewish population of 7.7 million, ultra-Orthodox voting patterns give them considerable clout, helping to secure them welfare benefits and wider influence." But the vocal majority is demanding Israeli police and government officials crack down ...

Haredi protest exploits Holocaust: Ultra-Orthodox Kids wear camp uniforms, Livni & Steinitz condemn

Haredi Ultra-Orthodox Jewish protestors staged a large demonstration at Shabbat Square in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Geula. Many men wore yellow Stars of David on their black coats and children were dressed in concentration camp uniforms. The Haredim sought to compare the media and political backlash against gender segregation to Antisemitism and the Holocaust. The protest was not overtly associated with recent attacks by Haredi extremists, but protestors did support Shmuel Weisfish, a member of the radical Sikrikim Haredi group who was convicted after assaulting a store owner. They also said the protest was their fight against "incitement." Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni called the actions "extremely disrespectful," and Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said, "We must not use the Holocaust and its memory in the internal arguments and conflicts within the state of Israel. I'm sorry to see this thing. I don't think that it's illegal [but] I think it's morally and ethically wrong. Nothing can come even close to the Holocaust and I think that there must not be cheapening of Holocaust symbols."

On Tuesday, thousands protested in Beit Shemesh -- a city where clashes with Ultra Orthodox Jews are intensifying. Our correspondent brings us the story. On Tuesday thousands gathered in Beit Shemesh, a city situated between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, to protest against what they call "Ultra Orthodox Domination." The crowd consisted of secular and practicing Jews alike. [Yair Borsekovski, Practicing Jew, Student]: "These extremists are a threat to democracy in Israel, a threat to Israeli society and Jewish communities all over the world. They want to take over our communities. They want to throw us out of our cities and out of our homes." The anger against Ultra Orthodox Jews in the city erupted last week after Israeli television aired a story about a little girl who fell victim to a group of Ultra Orthodox men. [Nir Vargon, Orthodox Jewish Rabbi]: "A little girl who was dressed in a very Orthodox and not at all provocative fashion happened to walk on the wrong side of the street, and she was bombarded with insults and humiliations and curses. Reaction to protest's Holocaust use: Ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews cross red line, Sivan Raviv reports

Ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews staged a very graphic demonstration this past weekend in Jerusalem, where Haredim wore yellow Stars of David and little children were dressed in World War II concentration camp uniforms. The Haredi protestors used Holocaust symbols in order to illustrate what they perceive as the persecution of Haredi Judaism. The protest was well planned, organised, and funded, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli ministers, and other officials strongly condemned the use of Holocaust symbols to make a political or religious point. JN1's Sivan Raviv gets Israelis' reactions. Professor Menachem Friedman, Sociologist and Expert on Haredi Life, had this to say, "They're trying to say that Zionist leadership or Zionist movement and the State of Israel is persisting to uproot the Jewish tradition from the Jewish way of life, from the Jews. And that is not less severe than to exterminate Jews physically because it is identical, even more severe than the physical extermination, because that is spiritual extermination of Judaism. "Using the symbol of the Holocaust, which is the most important symbol of the Jews in our days, almost the only thing that brings Jews together, that's so important for the Jewish People, and to use it for their purpose and to compare what the Nazis did in the past to what Israel does in our days, it's almost a desecration of the name of God. It's something unbelievable, it's something horrible to say and do."

Charedim, Israeli Police Clash In Beit Shemesh

Ultra orthodox jewish men clash with Israeli police in the city of Beit Shemesh, Dec 26, 2011. Tempers in Beit Shemesh ran high Monday, following the growing demand to crack down on radical religious elements that are demanding stricter enforcement of segregation between the sexes in the city. A police officer was wounded as clashes erupted between ultra-Orthodox Jews and Israel police on Monday in two separate neighborhoods in Beit Shemesh. Two residents were also arrested in the clashes. Approximately 300 ultra-Orthodox Jews began chasing police officers, hurled rocks at them, and burned trashcans after police were called to remove a sign on a main street that orders the separation of men and women in the neighborhood. The sign has been removed and re-instated several times over the past two days.

Protest against Orthodox Zionists in Hendon London

A quiet residential street in northwest London witnessed unusual scenes on Tuesday (May 11 2010) as orthodox Jews opposed to Israeli claims of sovereignty over Jerusalem clashed with supporters of a member of the hard-line Israeli government. Benny Begin, founder of the extreme right Herut current in Israeli politics, was the keynote speaker at the Hendon United Synagogue where a group of Orthodox terrorist Zionist organisations were celebrating Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem. According to Begin, "Jerusalem must remain under the exclusive sovereignty of the State of Israel... We must be constantly on the alert against ideas of internationalisation." Members of Naturei Karta at the protest About 20 members of Jews for Justice for Palestinians, the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods (J-BIG), the International Solidarity Movement, Liberal Democrat Friends of Palestine and the anti-Zionist rabbis of Neturei Karta, mounted a vigil outside the synagogue to defend equal access for people of all faiths to the holy city. They were among 24 Jewish, Christian, Muslim and other organisations who issued a protest statement in advance of the meeting. "Disgracefully, this deeply divisive, political event is organised in the form of a religious service," said Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi, one of the protest organisers. Ex-husband refuses Jewish divorce: Protest in Brooklyn to make Aharon Friedman give ex-wife a Get

Over a hundred protesters came to Flatbush, Brooklyn over an Orthodox Jew's refusal to give his ex-wife a Jewish divorce, called a get. This protest is the latest in a three-and-a-half-year dispute which began in March 2008 when Tamar Epstein, 28, asked for a divorce. Although the civil cases have been settled in US courts, 35-year-old Aharon Friedman has refused to give his ex-wife the customary get. Without it, Epstein cannot date or remarry within the observant Jewish community, and under Jewish law, she becomes an agunah, which means to be unreleased or anchored. The group which staged the protest, the Organisation for the Resolution of Agunot, held a previous rally in December 2010 where over 200 people came to Friedman's apartment in Silver Spring, Maryland. The ORA said their efforts in Silver Spring made Friedman a condemned pariah in his community and that because of his recalcitrance, they had decided to target family members who supported him, this time his uncle, Rabbi Jay Horowitz in Brooklyn. Though far fewer than for his ex-wife, Friedman's supporters explain that he is angry over visitation rights for his four-year-old daughter. The court's custody order grants him three weekends starting on Friday at 6pm, with two in Philadelphia -- and because he cannot drive until after sundown on Shabbos, he is unable to spend much time with his daughter before returning to Maryland. However, leading rabbis and media have condemned his withholding the get as a means of ...

For more news and videos visit ➡ ‪english.ntdtv.com‬ Follow us on Twitter ➡ ‪http Add us on Facebook ➡ ‪on.fb.me Israeli police arrest ultra-Orthodox protesters after scuffles in a town near Jerusalem. The trouble started over demands by zealots to restrict women from certain streets. Israeli police arrested several ultra-Orthodox protesters on Monday after an officer was injured in demonstrations in a divided city near Jerusalem. Last Friday a popular television channel showed an eight-year-old girl saying Orthodox men had harassed her about the way she was dressed while she was going to school in Beit Shemesh. That led to an increased police presence there and during scuffles one protester was arrested and three other ultra-Orthodox men are detained. The dispute underscores a widening fault-line in Israel between the religiously devout and a majority of non-observant Jews. Israeli women say they are discriminated against on buses and other in other places. Activist groups plan public protests in Beit Shemesh against "efforts to exclude women" from the public realm. Ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 10 percent of Israel's population but voting patterns give them considerable clout. But many rabbis have insisted the incidents in Beit Shemesh were the acts of a fringe minority. On Sunday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu order a crackdown against zealots accused of trying to enforce a form of gender segregation across Israel.

Orthodox Jews Protest Israeli Police Brutality 1

www.natruna.com Rabbi David Rosenberg, director of Camp Rav Tov, spoke to the demonstrators in Yiddish. Below is a rough translation of his remarks We have sat on the floor on Tisha B'av now for almost 1940 years, because, as we say in the prayers, "due to our sins we have been exiled from our land." The exile is a divine decree, not because we had no military, not for lack of soldiers, but because Gd sent us into exile because of our sins. The wicked established a state to free themselves and throw off the yoke of exile that Gd put on the Jewish people. Who established the state? Heretics, apikorsim, wicked people, murderers! Since the establishment of the state, these past 60 years have been a long chain of rebellion against Gd. Unfortunately, of the 5 million Jews who live in the Holy Land today, how many millions keep Shabbos? How many millions keep Yom Kippur? How many millions put on tefillin? Millions do not put on tefillin. Millions of Jewish children go to public schools where they are taught, Gd forbid, that the world has no Creator. Where in the world does this take place? In the Holy Land, in the King's palace, in Jerusalem and other cities. There the wicked profane the honor of Heaven. Let us express our voice of protest against this rebellion! Yes, we believe that the world has a Creator! We believe in the Torah! We do not take our redemption before its time! We do not join the wicked who uproot the Torah! The wicked want to suppress our outcry. But King ...

A demonstration in Beit Shemesh attracted thousands of Israelis who came to protest what they see as religious coercion by Ultra-Orthodox Haredi extremists. The Haredi extremists said the schoolgirls were not dressing modestly enough, however the girls were attending the religious Beit Orot school and wore long sleeves and long skirts. Many residents have called for the Beit Shemesh mayor to resign. Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni says, "There's a battle of the values of the state of Israel as a Jewish democratic state. There is no need to choose Beitween being a Jewish state and a democracy. I believe those values are living in harmony. But there are those who try to impose on us their way of translating Judaism. But this is something we cannot accept." Social media activist Ofer Berkowitz addressed the crowd, "Whoever spits on a little girl, spits on me and on all of you. Protestors rally against Orthodox Jews' chicken sacrifice

CROWN HEIGHTS - Protestors rallied against an Orthodox Jewish ritual in Brooklyn today that involves slaughtering chickens for Yom Kippur. The custom, called kaporos, is a form of sacrifice performed before the Jewish Day of Atonement in which it is believed one's sins are symbolically transferred to the bird. The Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos is protesting the ritual, calling the treatment of the animals inhumane. Some Orthodox Jews disagree with the protestors, and say that every effort is made to make sure the sacrifice does not hurt the chicken. They also claim the practice is a part of their religion and needs no explanation.

Tensions boil over outside fundraiser for accused jewish rapist

A debate over how to report sexual abuse crimes in the orthodox Jewish community was tense and at times violent as it spilled into the streets on Wednesday night. Police arrested at least two people from Jewish community after rushing the gate where protesters carried signs and voiced criticism for the fundraiser intended to raise money for a man accused of abusing a teenaged girl. At the center of it all is Nechemya Weberman, a Jewish counselor charged with forcing a girl to have sex with him over a three year period. His supporters don't believe the charges are true. Inside the event, a collection was set up. Some people dropped off checks. But the protesters say the fundraiser is about more than a rally and represents the attitude to protect the accused and criticize the accuser.

Women defy Haredi bus segregation efforts in Jerusalem & Ramat Gan, Ultra-Orthodox Haredim protest

Protestors boarded buses in Jerusalem and Ramat Gan over the weekend to draw attention to the forced gender segregation on public transportation by members of the Jewish Ultra-Orthodox Haredi minority. Groups of male and female protesters boarded public buses on routes used mainly by the Haredim and sat in mixed groups near the front, sparking heated exchanges. The Ultra-Orthodox Haredim have been criticised for their attempts to segregate men and women on buses, sidewalks, and in other public places. Incidents like the recent sexual harassment of a female soldier in Jerusalem are bringing increased government scrutiny of the Haredi community's influence on Israeli public life. Eyal Ackerman, Head of the Jerusalem Free Israel Movement, had this to say, "We believe that the public sphere in Israel should be open to everybody and today we have minorities, extremist minorities, from the Ultra-Orthodox communities that are trying to force their own way of life and beliefs on the public in Israel, on the seculars, on the modern religious, and we are trying to fight it, and to allow anyone from anywhere to sit wherever he wants on the bus and to walk in any street he wants and to go into any business he wants."
