While this piece has had a lot of metal coverage, as Justin noted, we saw Blue.Nocturne mix it up with some orchestral flavorings less than two weeks ago, so while Wily is still fresh on our minds, let's see what NF has cooked up. Things intro with some quick stick clicks then jump right into a thick mix of sick... chugs. What strikes me immediately is the speed and tightness of the whole thing: it's mean, it growls, and it's got balls, but it's also really sharp and locked in. As Eddie Izzard would say, very Prussian. It's been awhile since I've played GH or RB since my 360 red ringed, but DAMN if this doesn't make me want to pick up a plastic guitar accessory and make tortured facial gestures as if I were playing a real instrument. I think that basically sums it up - there aren't any huge surprises, here, just a baller rock/metal arrangement that does everything right. This system was my first introduction to RPGs with Phantasy Star II (I went back and played the first one later), has one of my favorite game soundtracks ever (Revenge of Shinobi, baby), produced the very first ReMix posted on this site (PSIII), and represented the last great hurrah of FM synthesis on the console market with the venerable YM2612. Twenty years seems like an eternity, especially since working on OCR has kept the system, its games, and their music very fresh in my mind. I've actually been playing Phantasy Star IV all the way through on my PSP lately, which I neglected to do back in the day. The Mega Drive was the system that made Sega a force to be reckoned with on the first party console market. Though great systems in their own right, the Saturn and Dreamcast both were incremental steps away from the market share that the 16-bit era brought for the company, and I'm not going to dwell on the 32X too much... suffice to say, the early 90s were a great time for gamers, and this system was a huge part of that. I confess to owning a Gamecube but not this game; I'm still working my way slowly through Metroid Prime, which is a bit more my style. Though the middle of this arrangement is taken up by a more reticent version of the classic Zelda theme on oboe, the framing melody on either end is new and gives this ReMix a good combination of nostalgia and freshness. Introing with solo harp, then gradually building to the suspenseful string stabs and horn fanfare of 1'00", there's some great running percussion with tambourine, timpani, and cymbals going full force. Things segue into the classic melody then back out, and we get a nice oboe duet towards the conclusion. Harp, oboe, strings, choir, orchestral percussion, and french horn are all mixed very coherently and cohesively into this lucid arrangement that's a bit of the old and a bit of the new. As our first Wind Waker mix, I'm certainly glad it didn't just focus on the legacy content, but instead incorporated it in very smoothly with the newer material. A good sense of harmony and dynamics gives this motion, breath, and direction. Very good stuff <b>...</b>

It was made back when I still used Drumkit from Hell (I now use Addictive Drums), but still contains the rudimentary aspects of what would later become my sound (quad-tracked chugging guitars, harmonizing leads, fancy schmancy arpeggios). Also, recorded back when I had my Ibanez SZ520 6 string guitar. I know use an Ibanez RG7621 7 string guitar. OCRemix writeup: These ARE popular source tunes, so it's especially groovy that Neko's done something different with them, and you can tell from his submission letter but also the mix itself that he's into the game and its music. Sustained strings and mellow electric guits enter, then a shred bed and acoustic kit join in, leading up to the anthematic soaring-lead-over-meaty-chug melody at 0'23", at which point, I'm basically sold. What holds my interest and KEEPS me sold for the rest of the mix is the arrangement, which could have rested on its laurels and still resulted in a pretty awesome track, but actually takes the time to develop, getting more metal at 1'49" with sick arpeggio riffs and head-banging drums then backing off at 2'11" before building up again. It was first released in the United States for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Capcom in 1989. In this game, Scrooge McDuck travels around the world collecting treasures to become the world's richest duck. The game was later ported to Game Boy. This game is unrelated to DuckTales: The Quest for Gold, which was released on a variety of personal computers in the early 1990s. DuckTales is often a subject of NES-related nostalgia and was generally popular.
