Maui, Hawaii 30-31 January 2012 Taming the T-Rex of Surf Jaws bites - Big wave surfers, Jeff Rowley, Greg Long, Shaun Walsh and Albee Layer 'paddle-in' to gigantic 15 metre (50 foot) plus waves at Peahi "Jaws" and cement paddling in as the new frontier in big wave surfing. Rowley and friends were on Maui, Hawaii waiting for the monster surf to hit the Peahi, "Jaws" reef and produce the worlds biggest surfable waves. On one of the biggest waves of the day, Rowley took off underneath the pitching lip of the wave. "As the wave was coming I knew I was in the right position, I didn't want to waste any energy paddling just turn around and go". "It just picked me up perfectly, It felt like I was riding a magic carpet with my heart in my mouth". In doing so Rowley's ride has skyrocketed into two categories of the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave awards; "Ride of The Year" and "Monster Energy Monster Paddle In". "Everything I have worked hard and trained for all my life helped me pull off a ride like this". A US shallow diver has broken his own world record by swan-diving 36ft (11m) into a paddling pool containing just 12in (30.5cm) of water. Darren Taylor, also known as Professor Splash, dived into a pool of near-freezing water in Trondheim, Norway, making the jump his 13th Guinness certified record. Mr Taylor, who is from Colorado in the US, has 25 years' professional high-diving experience and works as a stunt diver.......... A low-water run down the Horsepasture River in the Jocassee Gorges area of SW North Carolina using 2011 and 2012 Alpacka Rafts, January 9, 2012. Tim Johnson has the green, red and yellow boat; Luc Mehl the primary colored boat, and Roman Dial the yellow. The hike to Rainbow Falls took about 30 minutes, the hike out from just upstream of Sieve Rapid an hour and a half, and the creek itself five hours. We ran most everything down to the Sieve Rapid above Windy Falls except Ugly Stuff at the top, Corner Pocket, and Thrasher Pike B. Highway to Heaven was particularly fun. wfsu.org Doug Alderson has a pretty neat job. Make that jobs. In his spare time, he's an author, writing books about his adventures paddling and hiking. His day job is pretty cool, too. He's the paddling trail coordinator for Florida's Office of Greenways and Trails. He manages all of the state's freshwater and saltwater trails. He admits that most of the time, he's at a computer answering e-mails. But sometimes, he gets to head to Saint George Island with a local PBS affiliate producer, and he did spend three years mapping a paddling trail that takes you the whole way around the state. That's right, the whole state, from Pensacola, down to the keys, then back up around to Jacksonville. It's the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. Only five people have completed the whole trail. It's not for everyone. Luckily, it breaks down into 26 regional segments, each of which can be done over about a week of paddling and camping. If that's too much, you can take a day trip, or a couple of days. The trail is flexible that way. A beginner can take a day to tackle a segment near them, or a more experienced kayaker can go as long as they can take off work. The segment I was interested in was Segment 4: Forgotten Coast. This starts at the tip of Cape San Blas and goes to the end of St. George Island. You pass a lot of protected land, a lot of rich natural habitats, and the Apalachicola Bay Oyster Fishery.
