PAF received first Saab 2000 Airborne Warning & Control System (AEW&C) - December 8, 2009

PAF s' Multimedia paffalcons.com Pakistan Air Force has received first of its four Saab 2000 Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) aircraft from Sweden which will bolster the capabilities of the force manifold. There was a dire need to bridge, as far as possible, the growing disparity in the defence of Pakistan and the arch rival India. Like Pakistan Army and Navy, the Air Force too needed state of the art equipment as New Delhis acquisition of Russian-Israeli AWACS, Sukhoi fighter aircraft, launching of RISAT (Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite), and development of missile systems had created an imbalance of power in the region. Known as eye-in-the sky, the induction of Saab 2000 will be the most prominent force multiplier in the inventory of the PAF to cater for the conventional requirements of the Air Forces tactical and strategic operations. AWACS would enhance the monitoring of high and medium altitude flying aircraft, detect low level flying objects over land and sea at extended ranges and thus give enough time to the Air Force to counter the threat. Saab 2000 with an advanced technology sensor system is a highly capable yet cost effective surveillance platform to detect and track targets. It is also able to incorporate high-speed dash with low speed loitering capability and inherent fuel efficiency that meets demanding AEW&C requirements for performing a 180 turn in less than 30 seconds with an endurance of more than 9 hours. This system would help address ...

Pakistan Air Force : Air Defence System - Part 2

PAF s' Multimedia paffalcons.com The PAFs air defence system made a modest start in the early-50s with the induction of British Morconi Type 13 and 14 radars. Two Sector Operations Centres (SOCs) were also established during the decade, the first one at Korangi Creek and other at Sargodha. In the mid-50s, No 1 Group used to exercise operational control over these air defence elements while a Deputy Director Operations (Control and Reporting) was established at Air Head quarters for policy formulation. After the disbandment of No. 1 Group, an Air Defence Headquarter (ADHQ) was formed on 1 June 1961 and was located within the premises of Air Headquarter, Peshawar. For the next five years, the ADHQ exercised operational control over all the air defence units of the PAF. As the result of a major post-war reorganization in the 1966, an Operations Command was established again at Peshawar, to direct all operational activities of the PAF including air defence. However, over a period of time it gradually became involved in policy functions as well which created a duplication and control between Air Headquarters and Ops Command. To overcome these organizational and functional problems, it was decided to bifurcate Ops Command in 1970. All functions pertaining to tactical operations reverted to Air Headquarters operations branch and the Air Defence Headquarter was revived to exercise operational control over the air defence units. In 1974, another review led to the creation of an ...

A short documentary on Special Service Wing of Pakistan Air Force. Special Service Wing (SSW), also known as 312th Special Service Wing or Maroon berets, are an independent commando and special operation military division of the Pakistan Air Force. The SSW or Maroon Berets are an elite special operations force based upon United States Air Force's Special Tactics Squadron and the United States Army Rangers. The Air Force personnel and soldiers were merged with the Special Service Group and most of its members had actively participated during the Afghan War in the 1980s. PAF's Gallant Christian Hero: Group Captain (Retd) Cecil Chaudhry, Sitara-i-Juraat - Part 1

Flight Lieutenant Cecil Chaudhry, Sitara-i-Juraat paffalcons.com Cecil Chaudhry, the son of Faustian Elmer Chaudhry, the famous Chief Photographer of Pakistan Times, Lahore, was born on August 27, 1941. His interest in aircraft and flying brought him to the PAF and he graduated in 1960. He soon established himself professionally and in 1965 was working as Flight Commander (Training) under the renowned Squadron Leader Sarfraz Rafiqui. When war broke out on September 6, 1965, Cecil busied himself flying numerous Close Support missions to ward off the Indian ground attack against Lahore and Sialkot. He was detailed to fly a dusk strike mission against Halwara under the command of Squadron Leader Rafiqui. There were unavoidable delays in their take-off and Halwara got forewarned because of the successful PAF strike against Pathankot. When Rafiqui, Yunus and Cecil reached their target Halwara, they were intercepted by numerous Hunter aircraft of the Indian Air Force. During the engagement, after shooting down one Indian Hunter, Rafiquis guns jammed and he handed over the lead to Cecil. The three fought bravely against heavy odds but Rafiqui and Yunus were shot down while Cecil managed to return safely after shooting down a Hunter. The loss of his mentor Rafiqui and friend Yunus enraged Cecil and he fought the rest of the war aggressively and with determination. For his acts of courage, dedication and professional ability, Cecil received the Sitara-i-Jurat. During the 1971 war ...

Indian Air Force KILL PAF Atlantique

The French-built naval plane Breguet Atlantique (Breguet Br.1150 Atlantique) plane, flight Atlantic-91, c/n 33, of 29 Squadron was one of Pakistan Navy's frontline aircraft, used primarily for patrol and reconnaissance. Atlantic-91 left Mehran (Sindh province) Naval Base in Pakistan on Aug 10 1999 at 9:15 am (PST). An Indian Air Force ground radar picked up the flight path of the plane approaching the International Border. Two IAF Mig-21 interceptor aircraft of No.45 Squadron, from the Indian airbase at Naliya in the Kutch region, were soon scrambled by the Indian Air Force. After a series of maneuvers—and a conflicting version of events from both sides—the two jets were given clearance to shoot down the Pakistani plane. At 11:17 am IST (10:47 am PST), nearly two hours after takeoff from Pakistan, the Atlantique was intercepted and an infrared homing R-60 air-to-air missile was fired at it by Squadron Leader PK Bundela, hitting the engine on the port side of the plane. This resulted in the aircraft losing control and spiraling towards a crash at approximately 1100 hours PST and approximate location 23°54′N 68°16′E / 23.9°N 68.267°E / 23.9; 68.267, killing all 16 on board the Atlantic-91, including five officers of the Pakistan Navy. In India, the incident made the two pilots of the MiG-21s into instant heroes. On October 8, 2000, the prestigious Vayusena medal was awarded to Squadron Leader PK Bundela. The medal was also awarded to Wing Commander VS Sharma (the fighter ...
