World Health Day 2011 is dedicated to antimicrobial resistance, a major threat to patient care and disease control throughout the world. Antimicrobial resistance is a significant obstacle to success in controlling HIV, malaria and tuberculosis—three of the world's leading infectious killers. This serious problem also makes it more difficult to treat hospital-acquired infections, facilitates the emergence of "superbugs" that are resistant to major antibiotics, and creates the need for new, more expensive and more complex treatments.

MaximsNewsNetwork: 09 September 2009 - PAHO: The Brazilian Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Butantã Institute in São Paulo, will start the production of around 17 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine in October 2009. The vaccines will be available at the beginning of 2010. Guaranteeing access for developing countries to vaccines, including a possible vaccine for the new influenza A(H1N1) virus, is a major concern of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the regional office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Health Ministry of Brazil with the collaboration of the Butantan Institute in São Paulo, will start the production of around 17 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine in October 2009. The vaccines will be available at the start of 2010. In the meantime, PAHO says people should follow public health advice such as covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, washing their hands frequently, and postponing travel if sick. Those who travel and return sick should seek medical advice. The Butantan Institute just finished building this new influenza vaccine plant that was planned years ago in anticipation of a possible pandemic caused by a virus such as bird flu. It will now be exclusively devoted to full-scale production of the H1N1 vaccine. The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) links existing institutions and networks that have human and technical resources that can be mobilized in the event of outbreaks of potential international significance. GOARN provides an operational framework for pooling the expertise and skills available from these institutions to help ensure that the international community is constantly alert and able to respond effectively to such outbreaks. Dr. Pradip K. Bardahn, of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh--a WHO Collaborating Center--was mobilized through GOARN to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and health workers in Haiti in clinical management of cholera patients. Two weeks into his stay in Haiti, after visiting more than a dozen hospitals and training several hundred healthcare profesionals, Dr. Bardaham shared his experiences and impressions of the cholera epidemic and the response.

The certification project is the first of its kind and may very well discover that Saint Lucia is the first country in the region to eliminate mother to child infections. The Ministry of Health will collaborate with PAHO on the project for its duration.
