A Peek Behind The Scenes At Whole Foods
The time, Sunday Afternoon The place: West Hollywood, California Im Joe Tuesday, and Im a resource cop. I heard that the local Whole Foods Market in West Hollywood was passing off used goods to its customers. The customers were buying it. I wasnt. I decided to investigate. I saw this character with a mustache and goatee chatting up a bright young dame. He turned out to be Tony Banuelos; the leader of this Whole Foods gang. The dame was Melissa McGinnis of Greenopolis TV, there with some white haired guy with funny shorts for the opening of a new GreenOps machine at the store. Whats her angle? I wondered. Whats reuse of resources got to do with an upscale grocery joint in West Hollywood? A lot, I found out. I cruised down the take out aisle, where I was assaulted by rows of potato-based tableware and coffee lids, 100% post consumer recycled napkins, and bulrush trays and containers. No bull? I thought. No bull. Bulrush. This stuff can be composted and turned into something straight out of- well, nature. They do that with the old vegetables, too. No I dont mean my sidekick Officer Gannon. I mean the leftover produce that nobody buys and only a low life scum would want. Real low life scum, I mean- bacteria and organisms that turn this stuff into rich humus for the garden. And then I turned the corner and bingo! -there it was- bags of the stuff. Dark, rich fertile compost lined up like the bookies and rum heads down at Jimmys bar. And the customers were buying it. Madonna-Bedtime Story
"Bedtime Story" is a song by Madonna from her 1994 album Bedtime Stories. The song was released as the third single from the album in April 1995. "Bedtime Story" was a collaboration of sorts between Madonna and Icelandic popstar Björk. A fan of Björk's solo work, Madonna harbored intentions of working with her, although Björk declined the opportunity of co-operation, instinctively feeling it would be wrong. The Bedtime Stories album co-producer, Nellee Hooper (also responsible for co-production of Björk's early solo work) asked Björk to contribute to the album sessions, leading to her contribution of the demo "Let's Get Unconscious" especially written for Madonna. Both Hooper and De Vries changed the composition significantly enough to gain co-writing credits. The lyrics to "Bedtime Story" are Björk's own criticism of Madonna's aesthetic. For a Madonna dance record, the song is somewhat unconventional. A minimal trance backing is used and the lyrics deal with a journey into the subconscious. The song was a top five success in markets such as the UK and Australia, as well as being a dance club hit, but in the US the song peaked at number forty-two becoming the first Madonna single since 1983's "Burning Up" to not reach the top-forty. Some Madonna fans, in retrospect, have cited the structure of "Bedtime Story" as a precursor to the progressive, electronica-based sound that would follow three years later with Madonna's next studio album, Ray of Light.
