Speed painting dog portrait in pastel (Setter)
A commissioned portrait of Jake the Gordon Setter, painted in pastel pencils on sanded paper (Fisher 400). I wish I could really work this fast, but in reality it took about 20 hours. The painting measures about 18x16". To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. The background is in soft pastel sticks, the 'brush' looking thing I use on it at the start is a silicon 'colour shaper' tool: it blends the colours. The dog is done entirely with pastel pencils. Mostly I use Faber Castell & Schwann CarbOthello. I used to use Derwent, but have had quality issues so I've stopped using them and cannot recommend them. The stick you can see some of the time is a Mahl stick, as used by signwriters. It's just to lean my hand on without smudging the work. I do sell my work and take portrait commissions in the UK (it's my living, so please don't ask for freebies!), more about that on my website for anyone interested. I don't do any teaching or tuition, I just make these videos from time to time because people seem to enjoy watching the process. Hope you do too... happy viewing!

To complete this How-To you will need: Drawing paper A graphite pencil One set of thin pastels One set of thick pastels A cotton swab A rolled-up scrap of paper A well-ventilated area (optional) Step 1: Sketch an outline Sketch an outline onto pastel paper using a graphite pencil. Step 2: Decide between oil and dry Determine whether you want to use oil pastels or dry pastels. Oil pastels create layers and glide over previous lines; dry pastels are better suited for blending. Tip: Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling pastel particles. Step 3: Sketch fine lines Use the thin pastels to sketch in the finer lines in your drawing. Sharpen the tip for an even finer line. Step 4: Color wider areas Color larger areas with the thick pastels. Use wide, sweeping strokes. Tip: Don't apply too much pressure -- pastels break easily. Step 5: Use a cotton swab for special effects Use a cotton swab to smear colors into the paper, and blend them for special effects. Step 6: Blend colors next to each other Blend colors that are next to each other by <b>...</b>

OIL PASTEL DEMO MARSH LANDSCAPE - GARY GARRETT PAINTING
This one is an 11x14 Oil Pastel drawing using Cray-Pas, Mungyo, and Loew Cornell oil pastels on Canson acid free paper #501 "Tobacco" color paper. This drawing was made from sketches made last summer around St. Augustine's marshlands off the intracoastal waterway south of the fort, and north of Matanzas. It was a nice change of pace from my other recent paintings. I use a technique that layers color on color, then smeared together... usually I would use a paper shading taper (tortillon) to smear it... but not having any right now, i had to use my "built-in" smear stick (my finger) LOL. It was fun to do a pastel again. The music is one of my originals, named "Timuquana" in honor and respect for the indians who first settled this area. I used my home-made cedar acoustic guitar and multitrack recorded on my GNX4 then downloaded to my computer. Hope you like it. It was time-lapsed using a Sony TRV25 in INTERVAL mode (1/2 second every 30 seconds). A time lapse film of my painting of Barney, a lovely golden retriever. I made it using pastels and pastel pencils on sanded paper (Fisher 400). This was a commission for Barney's family, and the painting is about 14x10". I hope you enjoy watching. To answer the FAQs that I usually get: This painting took about 12 hours work in total. Reverse Pastel Painting - Lesson Plan
In traditional painting, a painter works from the background and builds up to the foreground. In a 'reverse painting' a transparent substrate, such as glass, is used and is the finished painting is viewed from the reverse side. This art form requires the foreground to be created first, and, working backward, ends with the background. DIY Pastel Hair Chalking
Hey Loves! So yesterday morning I was browsing the internet and came across the blog "The Fabulous Stains" They posted the cutest video on hair chalking, I was so inspired and decided to try it out on myself. I loveed it!! think it is such an amazing idea, and I had to share it with the rest of you! The best part about this is that it comes out in 2-3 washes. I think it is genious!
