This is gratefully dedicated to Beethoven and Thoreau, who wrote about nature as passionately as Beethoven depicted it in music.

''Szene am Bach'' Symphony No. 6 in F major, op. 68 ,"The Pastoral" was written almost simultaneously with The 5th Symphony, but differs from it in theme. If Symphony No.5 deals with the struggle and the joy of victory, "The Pastoral" represents the expression of the love the composer holds for nature. In a letter to Therese Malfatti in the summer of 1808, Beethoven said " How happy I am to be able to walk among the shrubs, the trees, the woods, the grass and the rocks! For the woods, the trees and the rocks give man the resonance he needs." Beethoven's great love of nature, the delight in strolling through the woods of Heilllingenstadt, the fact that he always found his equilibrium in the heart of nature, all these led to the creation of his sixth symphony. This programmatic endeavor is clearly expressed through the suggestive title of the symphony, as well as through the titles of each segment of it, through this initiating the later direction of his programmatic symphonies and even of his symphonic poems. When he found refuge in the midst of nature, he jotted down themes inspired by the trill of birds, the trickling of creeks or the rustle of leaves. In a notebook from 1803 was found an outline of a river's trickling with the additional note: " The greater the river, the more grave the tone." Beethoven rose much higher than his predecessors who tried to capture the gist of nature, because he places man with his feelings and sensitivity in the heart of nature. And this <b>...</b>

The work is in sonata form, and makes use of seven distinct motifs, each of which is extensively developed and transformed. An unusual aspect of the movement is the use of a microscopic texture, obtained by multiple repetitions of very short motifs. As Yvonne Frindle has said, "the infinite repetition of pattern in nature [is] conveyed through rhythmic cells, its immensity through sustained pure harmonies."

The Pastoral Symphony utilized delicate color styling to depict a mythical ancient Greek world of centaurs, pegasi, the gods of Mount Olympus, fauns, cupids, and other legendary creatures and characters of classical mythology. It tells the story of the mythological creatures gathering for a festival to honor Bacchus, the god of wine riding his horned donkey, Jacchus, which is interrupted by Zeus, who decides to have a little fun by throwing lightning bolts at the attendees. Disney originally intended to use Cydalise by Gabriel Pierné as the music for the mythological section of the program. However, due to problems fitting the story to the music, the decision was made to abandon Cydalise for other music.

Beethoven's 6th symphony, dubbed 'the Pastoral Symphony' segment from Disneys Fantasia. Act three shows all the centaurs, fawns and cherubs preparing for a grand celebration. Large amounts of grapes are gathered into an enormous tub and pressed into wine as Bacchus, the god of wine and revelry, arrives astride his unicorn-donkey. With the drunken deity present, the festivities get into full sway. All the revelers dance about merrily. Bacchus joins the dance as well, and also engages in somewhat cavalier behavior. All of a sudden Zeus crashes the party, raining down a violent storm; seemingly for no other reason than his own amusement (as usual). Everyone runs off, taking whatever shelter they can find while Zeus hurls his thunderbolts to the ground. (continuously aiming ar Bacchus for some reason.) Eventually, Zeus tires of his little game and hunkers down for a nap.

Beethoven's 6th symphony, dubbed 'the Pastoral Symphony' segment from Disneys Fantasia. In the final stage of this segment, all the centaurs, fawns and cherubs tentatively emerge from their hiding places and marvel about through the rain-washed world as Iris trails her rainbow through the sky. As daylight fades, all the inhabitants of the meadow gather atop a high hill and watch as Apollo drives his flaming chariot over the horizon. With evening upon them everyone hunkers down while Morpheus drapes his blanket of sleep over the world. And just before we depart this tranquil scene, we watch as Artemis, using the crescent moon as her bow, shoots a fiery arrow through the night, filling the sky with thousands of dazzling stars.

Bishop Walker received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a Master of Divinity Degree from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. This has been one of the first pieces that I worked on during my first quarter here at Northwestern University. The piece is still a work in progress though, but I decided I couldn't wait any longer to show you guys this awesome piece. :D This is the second Kapustin etude I've ever played, the first one being No. 3 "Toccatina". I have been planning on making a video for that one as well... but I think I killed that piece. ;____; Maybe some time in the future....... we'll see. But yeah, Kapustin is an amaaaazing Russian composer, except I only discovered him about a year or two ago! This is my measly attempt to educate the rest of the world about Kapustin through this video. XD As you can see, I am a big Wong Fu Productions fan. :DDD I got this shirt in the mail today and just HAD to wear it. :) I'm also super excited for when they come visit my campus on Nov. 14!! Ahhhhhh I'm so stoked ^__^ /fangirl ANYWAY, back to practicing in this quiet, lonesome practice room. Please don't ask me for sheet music. I must mention I am fully aware Ralph Vaughan Williams stated this work was not about "lambkins frisking about" nor pastoral scenery per se. But rather, it (A Pastoral Symphony) refers to the World War I fields of france in the sense of an elegy for those who died. That said, the work for me, is more a meditation on the qualities of peace. This video is humbly offered as a wreath of flowers for those who died and a vista of a world in peace. One must mention this movement is so reminiscent of the harmonies of Ravel with whom RVW studied.
