My first car has finally given up on me after 3 years and 60000 miles of being faithful. Instead, think of the "thing" you cannot let go off, but purposely! and when you hold the picture of that thing, be mindfull of your breath. Notice everything there is about your breath, the temperature of it as it passes over your tongue, the amount of seconds it takes to breathe in, and the same to breathe out, keep your breath in mind, This may take practise, but you will discover that you CAN have a thought of a painful memory, BUT quickly.....become mindful of the breath. and that painful memory starts to lose its pain, and for the first time starts to store itself in the correct way in your brain "without the emotions caused when it actually occured revisiting you" I wish you well, please do let me know how you get on trying this.
