A schoolgirl from Swindon has become the youngest person in Europe to be fitted with bionic fingers. Chloe Holmes, 15, lost her her fingers as a toddler when she suffered from septicaemia after contracting chickenpox. She wore a prosthetic hand until her family paid £38000 for the hi-tech hand. Her father Pete Holmes said: "We'd go out as a family and people would stare for the wrong reasons - they stare now in amazement."

Waterfalls flow upwards in extreme winds


Winds battering southern Australia over the last 24 hours have been so strong that spray from waterfalls south of Sydney has billowed up into the air. Nearly a month's worth of rain has fallen on the city in 24 hours, and wind speeds have reached 120km/h. The extreme weather has meant a rough ride on the city's ferries, and a high surf warning has been issued with waves expected to reach 5m.

Norway has been hit by twin terror attacks - a massive bomb blast in the capital and a shooting attack on a youth camp run by the governing Labour Party at an island on the Tyrifjorden lake. Emma, 16, a youth leader at the camp on Utoeya island, described how she escaped the gunman who went on a rampage killing at least 80 people. Mandrill makes 'pedicuring' tool


A crude "pedicure" carried out by a mandrill at Chester Zoo suggests the monkeys are capable of more advanced tool use than previously thought. Scientists from Durham University, UK, filmed the mandrill stripping a twig and using the resulting tool to clean under its toenails. They published the findings in the journal Behavioural Processes. Mandrills are the fifth species of Old World monkey seen deliberately modifying tools.

Father and son catch 7ft shark from kayak


A father and son who went fishing in the Gulf of Mexico caught something a lot bigger than they expected. Kevin Stevens and his 9-year old son, Hunter, spent an hour reeling in a 7ft (2m) foot long black tip shark from their 12ft (3.5m) Kayak. After getting some good pictures the pair agreed it was time to cut the shark loose.

Describing them as an "underground fortress", the team found abandoned supplies and a motorised cart that could have been used to transport Col Gaddafi through the tunnels. Yacht and tanker collide at Cowes Week regatta


A website cameraman captured the moment when a yacht and an oil tanker collided in the Solent during the annual Cowes Week sailing regatta. Two people were rescued from the sea after the collision. One was taken to hospital and later discharged. Solent Coastguard was alerted at 15:20 BST on Saturday that the yacht Atlanta of Chester had been involved in the incident. 'Pepper spray' used to break up protest on US campus


Amateur video of US police appearing to use pepper spray on a group of protesters has been posted online. It seems to show two officers using the spray on demonstrators, who were sitting passively on the ground with their arms linked together. The incident was said to have been filmed on Friday when police moved in to break up a protest held in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement, at the campus of University of California, Davis. The officers' actions, and the ensuing video, have prompted outrage among the faculty and students.

A premature and bonechilling shower for some morning joggers and bikers in the US Midwest. Some unlucky residents of Chicago -- known as the "Windy City" -- got a dousing from the frigid waters of Lake Michigan on Friday morning. A witness to Friday's shooting spree at a Norwegian island youth camp, which claimed at least 84 lives, has said he played dead to try and escape the gunman as he carried out the massacre. Adrian Pracon was on tiny Utoeya island, outside Oslo, when the attack began just hours after a bombing rocked the capital. The Oslo bombing killed at least seven. Home video has emerged that shows Col Gaddafi with members of his family in a tent similar to the one in which he once greeted world leaders, including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Norway: Anders Behring Breivik appears in court


Norwegian police are investigating claims by Anders Behring Breivik, who has admitted carrying out Friday's twin attacks in Norway, that he has "two more cells" working with him. Mr Breivik made the claim at his first court hearing since the bombing in Oslo and massacre at an island youth camp. Police have now revised down the island killings from 86 to 68 but increased the bomb death toll by one to eight. Mr Breivik was remanded in custody for eight weeks.

Protests against alleged corporate greed and government cutbacks have been held in cities around the world. Clashes erupted at the biggest rally, in Rome, when riot police intervened after a small group of masked militants attacked property. Police used tear gas and water, and baton-charged the crowd. Italian journalist Francesco Cirillo, at the San Giovanni Piazza, told the BBC a number of police vehicles had been set alight.

Underwater volcano erupts off Oregon coast


ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION The Axial Seamount, an undersea volcano, erupted off the coast of Oregon, spewing forth lava covering at least two kilometers (1.2 miles). Scientists monitoring the volcano for the last 13 years predicted it would erupt before the year 2014 and say the recent eruption marks the first successful forecast of an underwater volcano. The discovery of the new eruption came on July 28, when scientists led a routine expedition to Axial. The Axial, located 250 miles off the Oregon coast, is one of the most active and intensely studied seamounts in the world.

Fans have been mourning the death of Argentine folk singer Facundo Cabral, shot dead in Guatemala City. Cabral was killed on his way to the airport when unidentified gunmen shot at his car. He was 74 years old and nearly blind, and one of Latin America's most beloved singers.

Mount Etna eruption creates spectacula


Europe's biggest active volcano, Mount Etna, is putting on a spectacular show as it continues to spew lava. Fountains of lava 200-250m high were recorded at the volcano, while gas, ash and debris have caused disruption at the nearby Catania airport.

A shop in the centre of Bristol has been destroyed after a fire tore through the building. Floating restaurant swept away by swollen river


In China 11 people were thrown into a swollen river after a restaurant boat broke free of its moorings and was swept away. Fire crews had problems trying to reach the boat to rescue the passengers in the Jialing River in the southwest of the country.
