Pectus Excavatum - Mayo Clinic

Dawn Jaroszewski, MD, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, explains an innovative new treatment for pectus excavatum (PE). PE is the most common deformity of the chest wall, often called "funnel chest," in which the chest appears abnormally sunken. When severe, PE can cause breathing and heart problems, especially as patients age.

Pectus Excavatum Surgery - Mayo Clinic

Pectus excavatum is a condition in which a person's breastbone is sunken into the chest. While the sunken breastbone is often noticeable shortly after birth, the severity of pectus excavatum typically worsens during adolescence and can lead to heart and breathing problems. Dawn E. Jaroszewski, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon, at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, demonstrates pectus repair surgery -- before, during and after. Day 90 - Pectus Excavatum Ravitch - Things are going great!

After THREE MONTHS, I am doing quite well. I no longer have any issues and feel 98% back to normal. Running is AMAZING! I can run for what seems like an eternity. I feel as though I always had someone on my back, and now they are off and I am much lighter. It is amazing what I was missing growing up. As the scar heals, I am headed back to the gym now. As for sleeping on my side, that is about the only thing that still is a little uncomfortable, but only if I am on my side for more than an hour or two. Otherwise, I am not only happy with the way things have gone, I am ecstatic.

Day 0 - Pectus Excavatum Ravitch - Pre Op - The day before the surgery

This is an informative video showing the chest before the Ravitch Pectus Excavatum repair surgery. This is NOT the Nuss procedure. Hey guys, I am a 32 year old male going in for surgery tomorrow. I wanted to put together a short video of myself before and after the surgery. I have purposely left my name out of the video for privacy reasons. This surgery is needed due to a recent event where I lost consciousness and fell, breaking three ribs. Shortly after, my doctor referred me to a heart doctor that led to testing. This testing showed my reduced lung capacity as well as the CT scan showing my heart has impeded functions. In addition, I have Mitral Valve prolapse which is caused by the Pectus Excavatum, as well as a stomach wall hernia that will hopefully be repaired soon. I put this video together to help others understand that Pectus Excavatum is not as "nice" as the doctors may have you believe at first. Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them.

Pectus Excavatum -Clinton- Day #1 after Surgery Vid #3

I am in awful pain in this video. You can tell that I am in a great deal of pain in this video. I dont even remember shooting it. I was on a medication called Dalatta. I had a Spinal Epidural that was pumping this medication into me and I also had a clicker that allowed me a shot every 15 minutes. They didnt use morphine because they said this med was stronger and wouldnt cause me to itch? I didnt know and didnt care. The spinal epidural made my entier chest numb. I couldnt feel it at all. The nurse told me the clicker keeps track of how many x's I clicked and the first night alone I was up to 108. I couldnt even move I was in so much pain. The first night I dont remember much but being in horrible pain and being somewhat mean to the nurses about my pain. When I shot the video the next day I was in so much pain I couldnt hardly talk. They didnt get me up due to the amount of pain I was in. I laid in bed all day. I didnt eat one thing. I did drink a lot of water though. I was extremely dehydrated. I kept getting migraines and feeling dizzy. I also had a regular catheter which wasnt as bad as expected. More videos to come. Stay tuned. Any questions PM me.

Pectus Excavatum -Clinton- Vid #5 One Month Post-op

This is a follow up to my previous vids on my battle with Pectus Excavatum. I am 1 month 6 days Post-op in this video. I had the "Nuss" procdedure done on my chest. The "dent" in my chest is completely gone but I remain in horrible pain. I continue to be on Pain Medication. I am on 10 mg Percocet, 5 mg of Valium, and 800 mg of Ibuprophen. The pain varies but seems to be worse around my Stabilizers which are my incision sights. My chest remains numb in places. I have a great deal of rib pain due to re-formation of my ribs. I think of it kinda like braces in a way. Since they lifted my sternum my ribs are reforming to it (if that makes sense). My doc says I can go back to work in a month and I cannot drive yet. I had my 1 month appointment and tests showed no Pectus Excavatum, no mitral valvle prolapse, no heart murmur. My breathing has decreased but that is expected to get better over time. I can get the spirometer up to about 1700 currently. To give you an idea I could only get it up to 300 in hospital. I can put my arms above my head now. I still cant raise them straight up. I still cannot turn my torso much and must do things very slowly. I still cannot lift anything over 5 pds. I cannot lift weights until 3 months and heavy weights until 6 months. If I played contact sports I could go back to them in 6 months. I go on walks which seem to hel[p with pain and stiffness. I cannot run until 3 month mark. I have good days and I have bad days with pain. I feel tired most of ...

Day 1 - Pectus Excavatum Ravitch - Just after the 7 hour surgery

Just after the 7 hour surgery, I awoke and took this video. NOTE: Shortly after this video I was in EXTREME pain. MY family had left for the night and my asking for help went unanswered until the following morning when a nurse did an ice chest to see that it was in fact not working. All through the night I could not sleep and the nurses would comment "Honey, if your epidural is not working, you would not be talking". I thought perhaps that I was just under a huge amount of pain and kept quiet to some degree before it felt just too horrible

Dieterich Buxtehude (1637 - 1707). Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Maria Christina Kiehr (Soprano). Rosa Dominguez (Soprano). Andreas Scholl (Alto). Gerd Türk (Tenor). Ulrich Messthaler (Basse). Dir. René Jacobs. To all my friends and subscribers. Membra Jesu Nostri: Membra Jesu Nostri (English: The Limbs of our Lord Jesus), BuxWV 75, is a cycle of seven cantatas composed by Dieterich Buxtehude in 1680, and dedicated to Gustaf Düben. The text, Salve mundi salutare - also known as the Rhythmica oratio - is a poem written by Medieval poet Arnulf of Louvain (d. 1250). It is divided into seven parts, each addressed to a different part of Christ's crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, chest, heart, and head. 5. Ad Pectus. "Sicut modo geniti infantes rationabiles, et sine dolo concupiscite, ut in eo crescatis in salutem. Si tamen gustatis, quoniam dulcis est Dominus." Salve, salus mea, deus, Jesu dulcis, amor meus, salve, pectus reverendum, cum tremore contingendum, amoris domicilium. Pectus mihi confer mundum, ardens, pium, gemebundum, voluntatem abnegatam, tibi semper conformatam, juncta virtutum copia. Ave, verum templum dei, precor miserere mei, tu totius arca boni, fac electis me apponi, vasdives deus omnium. 30 Days after the big surgery, I am up and about. Only mild pain at night and sleeping on my stomach still hurts. Otherwise I am doing great! I can take a deep breath, and my heart has no restrictions. I am using a scar reducing cream on the main scar, but still have to let the tube scars heal naturally until later when I plan on having them re-cut and micro-sutured together.

Pectus Excavatum -Clinton- Day 2 Vid #4

This is my last video in the hospital. I forgot the final 5 days I was in there. I could have been discharged after day 5 but I couldnt urinate so they wouldnt let me leave. I was catherized 5x. 1 was the initial when I was under anestesia and the next 3 I was awake and they just drained my bladder every 6-8 hours due to me not being able to pee. They kept giving me chances and I couldnt go. So on the 5th and final time they put a folley in and left me alone fore 2 days and took it out on day 7 in hospital. The final time was very painful due to all the irritation. About 6 hours after taking it out I finally pee'd. It was like liquid gold I was sooo friggin happy. In this video I am using the breathing device which I am so sore I can only get it up to 700 which I was suppose to get it up to a 1000. I can get it to 1500 now which is good but I am ummm 12 days post op. I am still in pain in the video. I ate and didnt throw up like most people. I did my first walking which was fine once I was up. It hurt so much on my sides to get up. It felt like I was getting stabbed with a knife everytime I attempted to get up. This pain only occured where the bar was and when I had to use that muscle. Coughing, laughing, burping hurt so much during this time. I couldnt drink any beverage with carbonation or foods that would cause gas. Very bland diet I would suggest for first 3 weeks. During day 3 - 4 they took me off my clicker and epidural out and I was in so much pain. I was on oral ...

Hey everyone! I am back home now and feeling GREAT! I can breath in full and when I stand, I NEVER get dizzy or feel light headed anymore. Instead, my heart has room to beat and it beats well! So far, the doctors have been unable to hear the Mitral Valve Prolapse either, but they will need to do further testing to make sure it is gone. So far, so good!. I will be updating the next one around Day 20 and let you know what I find out from my heart doctor. Thank you everyone for your support.

Six months and I feel absolutely amazing. I can breath in completely now. And I would never have known what it was to breath in completely without the surgery. Pectus Excavatum Story-Mayo Clinic

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common deformity of the chest wall, a condition in which the chest appears abnormally sunken. More than just a cosmetic issue, PE, left untreated, can worsen with age and cause breathing and heart problems. Mayo Clinic in Arizona is collaborating with Phoenix Children's Hospital to treat pectus in both adults and children. Dr. Dawn Jaroszewski, Mayo Clinic cardiothoracic surgeon, explains about surgical treatment of PE. Also, we see how a young Phoenix patient, age 17, underwent surgery at Phoenix Children's Hospital for her pectus excavatum.
