Pen Writing on Multi-touch Table with SGDriver

For more detailed information about OpenMT and SGDriver, please visit : openmtproject.sourceforge.net Systems used * Multi-touch table: FTIR multi-touch table * Pen: IR Pen (Nib type) * Track touch points: CCV * Pen recognition: SGDriver gets multiple touch points from CCV and select a single touch point as a pen with a simple recognition logic. * Send corresponding Windows messages: appropriately assign WM_LBUTTONDOWN, WM_MOVE, WM_LBUTTONUP. Why pen writing? * We just want to write on our MT table. That's all :) Why pen writing with SGDriver? * We tested CCV + MTVista for pen writing but didn't get satisfactory results. We concluded that a separate pen recognition algorithm is required. TODOs 1. Palm rejection is not perfect. It works only for the right-handed and may not work when two hands are on the surface. 2. SGDriver cannot recognize pen and multi-touch at the same time. For this, the recognition algorithm should be highly improved. It may need a sort of pattern recognitin algorithm 3. SGDriver sends out mouse messages. However, in the future version, it should sends out digitizing tablet messages like Wacom tablet. Unfortunately, we can't find appropriate APIs for digitizing tablets.

Stitching

Stitching allows users to combine pen-operated mobile devices by using pen gestures that span multiple displays. To stitch, a user starts moving the pen on one screen, crosses over the bezel, and finishes the stroke on the screen of a nearby device. We demonstrate different applications that take advantege of stitching and also discuss design issues that arise from proxemics, that is, the sociological implications of users collaborating in close quarters.

History of Microsoft -- 1992

For Microsoft, 1992 is about partnership. Intel and Microsoft introduce a new specification (in beta form) called DV MCI (the digital video command set of MCI), that expands the Media Control Interface (MCI) for the Microsoft® Windows® graphical environment to work with current and future forms of digital video. We announce the Microsoft Certified Professional Program, a rigorous series of online exams covering Windows 3.1, LAN Manager, and SQL Server. And in response to an inflammatory newspaper article in the New York Post, Microsoft announces that there are no hidden messages contained in any of the Wingdings fonts in the Microsoft® Windows® operating system and certainly no hate messages against any religious or ethnic group. Revenue/Headcount The 1992 fiscal year-end sales total $2758725000. The 1992 fiscal Year employee headcount totals 11542 people. January 20, 1992 A Portable Computing Initiative suite of technologies is announced. As the first phase of the initiative, Microsoft will offer: Advanced Power Management (APM) to extend battery life; Microsoft® MS-DOS® ROM version 5.0; Interlink, a fast new data transfer utility; and Solid-State memory support. January 28, 1992 Scott Oki senior vice president of US sales, marketing and service retires and Microsoft promotes Jeff Raikes, currently vice president of the Office Systems Group, to fill the position. February 3, 1992 Microsoft announces a new organizational structure and outlines three centers of strategic <b>...</b>

Wang freestyle

This is a demonstration of a novel system to support annotation of digital documents using syncrhonized pen, ink, and pointing. The system enables the user to mark up a document, as well as gesture and point, with a pen, while speaking, and have all of this recorded and then mailed with the document. The resut is that recipients got a message that provided natural "over the shoulder" presentation of the sender's comments. What is remarkable is that this work was done in 1989, and yet, while being of significant potential value, this capability is still not available on today's systems. This video was produced in 1989 and was circulated as part of the ACM SIGGRAPH Video Review 45, Copper Gilloth and Bill Buxton, editors.

1994 Demo 1 PenPoint for ATT / EO

In 1994 David Schachter (davidschachter.com) put together an educational series, sponsored by HP, on Pen Computing technology. I (the guy with the hair) was asked to represent the AT&T Personal Communicator technologies. I was convinced, and still am, that these "direct manipulation" and notebook metaphor concepts would dominated personal computing. Alas, it was all way ahead of its time. I was pretty discombobulated when I did this first episode...I had just received word on the way to the studio, that AT&T Corporate was pulling back financially and technology-wise on the whole concept. Of course I was not to disclose anything about that yet...thus the nervous levity, maybe I'll blog on those "this is a dead parrot" days later (inside joke). This is also for those who think Microsoft invented the convertible tablet computer, which is why I left in the clip at the beginning (before I appear). wanderbook.com

PenPoint Demo 3 for ATT

In 1994 David Schacter (davidschachter.com) put together an educational series, sponsored by HP, on Pen Computing technology. I was asked to represent the AT&T Personal Communicator technologies. As I said in the first part, I was pretty discombobulated when I did this ... I had just received word, though could not disclose, that AT&T was in the midst of pulling the plug financially and technology-wise on the personal communicator vision (I may blog the whole story someday). This clip is about development on the Eo and PenPoint, rather boring, but the visual programming tool called MagicScript show is still of some interest, and proven itself in many vertical applications with users to do their own rapid prototyping. It became a huge part of a project that continued long after EO closed their doors, with a company that took over the software and implemented in to today's Tablet computers (another story for sure).

Demo 2 Penpoint for ATT

In 1994 I was invited by David Schachter (davidschachter.com) to be a part of an an educational series, sponsored by HP, on Pen Computing technology. I was asked to represent the AT&T Personal Communicator technologies. As I alluded to in the first part, I was pretty discombobulated when I did this ... I had just received word, though could not disclose, that AT&T was in the midst of pulling the plug financially and technology-wise on our personal communicator division (I may blog the whole story someday). Anyway, I left a small clip before this second demonstration to show how far ahead Penpoint was at the time. Remember, in 1994 there was a thing called Windows 3.1? Yes, and worse, Windows for Pen was simply that, with the pen replacing the mouse... Ugh, that's why the clip is so brief, I couldn't take it then, and certainly not now.

GENESYS: An Interactive Computer-Mediated Animation System

This is a digital copy of a 15:42 minute 16mm film made in 1970. It presents a demonstration of one of the pioneering interactive systems that would enable artists, with no previous computer training, to do animation. The system is called GENESYS, and it was built by Ron Baecker as part of his 1969 PhD thesis. This system is, IMHO, phenomenal for all kinds of reasons. It mainly used the Rand Tablet, the grandparent of today's graphics tablets, for input. Hence, animators, who were skilled in drawing, were presented with a familiar tool - a stylus - with which to interact with the computer, and be able to do so using already established drawing skills. This was one of the first systems ever to practice user-centred design, where the intended user was someone who not only was not computer literate, but came from a field - animation - that was about as far away from engineering as one could be. It is significant that the full demonstration is done by Lynn Smith, such an animator, and not by Ron or one of his colleagues from MIT. My challenge to anyone who is not impressed by this is the following: find any other demo of a highly interactive computer system from 1970 or earlier that does this. But this system is not just interesting because it did a lot of stuff a long time ago that we take for granted today. It goes beyond this. It introduces concepts in pen-based computing (and not just animation) that have high relevance today, and yet are still not possible, even on most <b>...</b>
