Well, I am finally getting around to attempting to get my dvd's done. So many people have been requesting them. My apologies to all who have been waiting. Times are so strange and strenuous. I find myself working 3 ties harder than I ever have just to keep up with the economy. This is a first round attempt at a full commentary drawing of a dragon for dvd. I'm not sure I will actually use this one, however-- the art table I drew it on was shaking like crazy... I know if I was the viewer who bough a dvd with that goin on, it would drive me nuts. I will probably do a few more before I select the right one to produce for the final edition of the dvd. I am starting with the basics and drawing with ball point pen, and pencil in others for these dvd's. Believe me, that is the BEST way to explain how and why I am doing these the way I am doing them. Actual drawing time to get this one done was 48 minutes. Enjoy!

Hint number 1 is to see things as shapes. I like to analogize drawing with assembling a jigsaw puzzle because in both you look for shapes to fit together Hint number 2 is to pay close attention to the edges of what you are drawing. Light and shadows can do funny things and in almost anything that you draw you will see a disparity between the qualities of each edge. Hint number three is to develop your drawing like a Polaroid photograph. Polaroid was the company that innovated instant photography. After pushing the shutter button the photograph would come out of the camera and develop before your eyes. What I want you to know about this is that every part of the photo would develop at the same rate and that is how I want you to try to draw next time. In other words, move the drawing tool around, dont get stuck in a favorite spot. Alright, lets slow it down. What you are seeing me do here is pay close attention to the form and the proportions. In other words, I am comparing the sizes of the different shapes and making sure that the placement of each line is correct. I am using vine charcoal a HB pencil and an eraser. I started out with the vine charcoal because it is easy to erase and move around. You will see later in this video that after I am satisfied with the placement of the charcoal, I will hatch over it with a pencil to keep it undisturbed. I am also trying to be aware of the edges of my shapes and I am especially cognizant of the highlight on the top because that <b>...</b>

I'm sorry if this video doesn't help you any... I'm not sure how else to explain this. I just do it.... If you're looking for some help then perhaps seek an actual art teacher as I am not. I've never taken art classes and don't know how else to explain what I do. If you can't gather the technique I use from the video or through the written lay out below then I'm sorry I cannot help you. Step 1: Materials - Get a decent piece of drawing paper and a pencil. Use whatever suits you. I personally just use mechanical pencils. Be sure to have a decent big eraser, a small eraser for details, a blending tool (in my case tissue paper rolled up), and something to wipe away the shavings. I use a make-up brush. Step 2: Sketch - Find a good reference. I generally use photos by Dominica Nawrot from DeviantArt. If you use any of her work, please ask her for permission and give her credit for her wonderful photos! - I will start by isolating the area I'd like to draw. In this case, it was a photo of a horse trotting but I only wanted the head and neck so I cropped it and placed it on my computer screen. I enlarged it to see some details. It will become slightly distorted so I will compensate the best I can. Once I have my reference set, I'll start sketching. - I have no standard technique for sketching. Here is a time-lapse video of me doing a standard portrait using just a basic pencil through most of it, in a sketch pad. Toward the end, I did pick up a "Design Ebony Jet Black" pencil for some darker accents. There's nothing overly impressive or special about what I'm doing here, but I did this video as a (real-time) starter in a DVD commentary technique series I will hopefully be selling on my website soon. A lot of people want to know how to do the things I do in photoshop, such as Photo-realism, etc. But I believe it starts here... A pencil and paper. At least it did for me. I'm doing a complete website make-over for me site, and will be including a section documenting a "history" of how I started with this stuff, and how the path evolved into digital (for those who are interested). The site should be up this weekend. And for those who are following these vids, and reading this stuff- the t-shirts are done. They came out nice. They will be posted there as well, if you want to get your hands on one. Next vid-- airbrush photo realism... (well, hopefully next vid... I tend to wander off, and do other things... I still have a half-way completed oil of t-rex drying in my furnace room...Let's just say "within the next few vids"! ;-) )
