The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) has pulled out of the government in Khartoum, endangering a peace deal bewteen South and North Sudan signed in 2005. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall spoke to Pagan Amum, the SPLM's secretary general, who says the national congress is not implementing the peace deal.
Military training is an intense business, involving discipline, precision, and reserves of courage that can be called upon in the midst of battle. But for soldiers undergoing training in the People's Liberation Army of China that's taken to a whole different level -- as one of their exercises involves a life-and-death game of 'hot potato' with a live grenade. Incredible video footage shows Chinese troops stationed in Hong Kong passing around the live explosive from one soldier to the next until the last one finally throws it in the hole. The soldiers then leap out of the way before it explodes, covering their heads for protection. The clip shows them again doing the exercise, standing around a large hole. Each soldier deliberately takes the explosives in both hands and twists slightly at the torso before handing it off to the next soldier. The last soldier to hold the grenade must make sure it lands on the pond-side of the hole, a decidedly difficult task given the circumstances. All soldiers then leap to the ground as the C4 detonates, sending piles of dirt and dust into the air. The exercise is just one of many used by the PLA. As with militaries across the world, the PLA instil their soldiers with specialised skills and advanced training. The video shows the soldiers shooting flags that unfurl when shot, firing missiles and rifles, and leaping through flaming hoops. Just an awesome music video showcasting some systems in service with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) as of 2011. The PLA came a long way since their humble roots as badly equipped peasant guerrilla army of 1927 and the Second World War. As by the end of 2011, the PLA achieved a certain level of maturity on both doctrinal and combat operational fronts, often combining old legacy and new modern hardware with integrated C4ISR and C2 systems, to make the best out of available resources - with pretty good results. But China's long march to modernity still isnt over at all: The PLA, China's armed forces, will continue to modernize, to reform, to integrate and to march on for the sake of a well-fortified, strong and sovereign Chinese nation, that shall never again be ravaged and divided up by hostile foreign imperialists. The People's Liberation Army was founded on August 1, 1927 during the Nanchang Uprising when troops of the Kuomintang (KMT) rebelled under the leadership of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai shortly after the end of the first Kuomintang-Communist alliance. They were then known as the Chinese Red Army (simplified Chinese: 红军; traditional Chinese: 紅軍; pinyin: hóngjūn). Between 1934 and 1935, the Red Army survived several campaigns lead against it by Chiang Kai-Shek and engaged in the Long March.
