MINNEAPOLIS — Mattie Lueck had the best seat in the house for a change. The Pequot Lakes senior, and lone returning starter from last year's state team, sat for most of the first half in Tuesday's Class 2A State quarterfinal at Williams Arena. When she returned in the second half, she put the finishing touches on Pequot's 57-46 victory over the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars. Lueck finished with a team-high 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half as Pequot outscored ZM 37-29 in the second frame. For Thanksgiving I visited the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center on the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Reservation in New London, Connecticut. The visit was a moving experience. Though I'm an avid study of native American history and culture, there was a lot I did not know about the Pequot tribe. I learned a lot on my trip and will visit often to continue learning about this unique tribe. Unfortunately the museum does not allow photos of the AMAZING living exhibit but they did allow me to snap these photos of a Pequot family fleeing from a raid of Europeans. The Pequot Museum's Educational Powwow, held each year in July, offered visitors the opportunity to learn and identify different songs, while watching dancers in their colorful regalia. Master of Ceremonies Wayne Reels (Mashantucket Pequot) kept things moving by presenting each dancer and provided meaningful details to the powwow audience. Native artists demonstrated and sold their works including wampum and beaded jewelry, sweet grass baskets and pottery. Visitors also sampled delicious Native food while taking in the views surrounding the outdoor terrace, with its graduated gardens and umbrellaed cafe tables.
